Among the thousands of people fleeing the five-week-old conflict in Ethiopia's Tigray region are a few dozen men, women and children from Eritrea, one of the world's most authoritarian states.
They were already living as refugees in Tigray, which had long been a safe haven for them during years of conflict and repression in Eritrea.
But when Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government launched a military operation against Tigray's ruling party, the Eritrean refugees' illusion of safety was shattered as violence escalated around their camps.
\"Suddenly soldiers came to our camp and they started shooting,\" Kheder Adam told AFP in a Sudanese refugee camp. \"The situation was very serious. There was a lot gunfire.\"
Kheder and his family had originally settled in one of the refugee camps in the Sheraro area of Tigray near the Eritrean border around two years ago, he said.
For years, Ethiopia and Eritrea had been officially in a state of war.
In 2018, Abiy took power, ending years of political dominance by the Tigray People's Liberation Front -- sworn enemies of Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki.
Abiy and Afwerki signed a historic peace agreement that same year, winning the Ethiopian leader the Nobel Peace Prize.
After the dramatic shift in alliances, Abiy's forces launched their operation in Tigray on November 4, Eritreans who had long benefitted from protection in Ethiopia appear to have become a target.
Since then, a few Eritrean refugees have managed to escape to Sudan.
The UN, meanwhile, has expressed fears for the safety for those still in Tigray, home to some 96,000 Eritrean refugees living in four refugee camps.
- 'Refugee again' -
Kheder, 30, who was separated by the recent violence from his wife and two children, aged three and one, was among several Eritrean refugees interviewed by AFP at a reception centre for new arrivals from Ethiopia in Hamdayit on the eastern Sudanese border.
\"Some of the soldiers were Eritreans, some of them were (Ethiopian) federal soldiers,\" said Kheder, of the attack on the camp in Tigray.
\"They were shooting at all people. All -- women, men, children,\" he said.
His comments were echoed Friday by a US State Department spokesperson -- though the Ethiopian government, a US ally, has denied the claim.
\"I feel worried and sad to be a refugee again. There I was a refugee, and here I am also a refugee. It's really difficult,\" said Kheder.
He cited Eritrea's notorious policy of universal, indefinite conscription as one reason why he fled his home country in the first place.
\"They forced us\" to undergo a mandatory national service in Eritrea, he said. \"That's why we decided to go to Ethiopia.\"
The Eritrean regime once used its war against Ethiopia to justify its system of universal conscription.
But the system remains in place despite the fact that the war ended in the year 2000, followed by the peace agreement in 2018.

Almost 1,000 people from Gauteng who travelled to KwaZulu-Natal to attend the annual matric Rage event have tested positive for Covid-19. The Gauteng health department said it had made significant progress in tracing the majority of pupils from the province who attended. Out of 1,322 pupils, mostly from the Johannesburg and Tshwane districts, 1,050 had already undergone testing for Covid-19. Of those 984 tested positive. “These students had 340 contacts of which 32 tested positive,” the department said in a statement, adding that it “continues to plead with learners and their parents to co-operate with health-care workers who are doing contact tracing as this is an important process aimed at stopping the spread of the coronavirus. “Out of the total number of learners 99 were unco-operative while the rest of the learners (173) either had supplied wrong contacts or were on voicemail. We call on those who went to the Rage event to quarantine themselves for 14 days and go for testing as a matter of urgency. Those that test positive will need to isolate for a mandatory 10 days.” The department said family contacts of those who tested positive should also go for testing and into quarantine. “Last week an increase in the number of positive cases was noted, with young people aged 11 to 20 constituting a large percentage of new cases. The Central African Republic's top court on Thursday rejected ex-president Francois Bozize's candidacy in forthcoming elections, boosting Faustin-Archange Touadera's bid for a second term at the helm of the deeply troubled nation.
The ruling was handed down by the Constitutional Court, which barred Bozize on the grounds that he was being sought for alleged murder and torture and was under UN sanctions.
It also rejected four other bids for the December 27 vote, leaving a field of 17 candidates now dominated by Touadera.
A former five-star general, Bozize, 74, has played a major part in CAR's decades-long troubles, and some have feared he could try to stage a violent comeback.
He seized power in 2003 before being overthrown a decade later by the Seleka, a rebel coalition drawn largely from the Muslim minority.
The 2013 coup sparked brutal violence between the Seleka and so-called \"anti-Balaka\" self-defence forces, mainly Christian and animist.
France intervened militarily in its former colony to push out the Seleka, winding down the operation after Touadera was elected in 2016 following a transition.
After spending years in exile, Bozize slipped back into the CAR in late 2019 and filed his candidacy in July.
- Court ruling -
But the Constitutional Court on Thursday said it would not accept his bid, \"given that the candidate is the target of an international arrest warrant\" filed by the CAR in 2014 \"for murder, arbitrary arrest, sequestration, arbitrary detention and torture.\"
It also noted UN measures against Bozize, which meant that he failed to meet \"criteria of sound morality in the electoral code.\"
The United Nations placed Bozize on its sanctions list in 2014, freezing any assets he held abroad and banning him from travel, on the grounds that while in exile he had been supporting militia groups guilty of \"war crimes and crimes against humanity.\"
Bozize would not issue an immediate reaction to the court's ruling, said his campaign manager Christian Guenebem, who insisted the arrest warrant and the UN sanctions \"do not constitute convictions and he continues to have presumption of innocence.\"
Aid workers said the former president was near Kaga Bandoro in the centre of the country when the court's decision was announced.
He was on the territory of a militia chief who was one of his supporters, they said.
Bozize retains a large following in the CAR, especially among the Gbaya ethnic group, the country's largest, and has many supporters in the army.
Many people in the country, as well as humanitarian experts and diplomats, have feared that he may try to force his way back into power although others discount this.
\"It would be a pretty bad idea to try something before the elections, as he would get the entire international community on his back,\" said Thierry Vircoulon, central African director at the French Institute of International Relations (IFRI) think tank.

He initially called 34 players in camp to prepare for the tournament, but was forced to drop six FC Platinum players whose club is engaged in the Caf Champions League. The squad has been training since last week, including playing friendly matches against some local Premier Soccer League teams. On Thursday, the Warriors played against Ngezi Platinum Stars before facing off with Caps United yesterday. Former Warriors captain Denver Mukamba, now with Ngezi Platinum, did enough in the match to convince Logarušic that he deserves to be in the squad. The former Dynamos and Caps United midfielder has already been drafted into the squad. The performance and subsequent inclusion of Mukamba has convinced Logarušic that he could have missed some players who deserve to play in the national team. Speaking to NewsDay Weekender yesterday, Logarušic said: “I’m using the friendly matches against the local clubs to see if there are other players that can fit in the Chan team. The current players in the squad were chosen by my assistants because I didn’t know them. I’m playing these games to see if there are some players we missed during the initial list. “I know just 10 players who I worked with in February in training and that means the remainder I never watched them during matches.
