Nationwide protests have taken place since October 7 despite the disbanding of the controversial Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) police unit.

The demonstrators have been accused of attacking police stations and personnel.

The rallies which are mostly attended by young people have become avenues to vent against corruption and unemployment.

Rights groups say at least 15 people have been killed the demonstrations began in early October.

HIGHLANDERS have professed ignorance of a letter inviting defender Peter Muduhwa (pictured) for trials at Mozambican giants UD Songo last week. BY FORTUNE MBELE Reports last week said the steely Warriors defender had been invited for a two-week trial stint at the Mozambican giants to start on October 26 to November 12, but the Bulawayo giants yesterday said they were yet to see that correspondence. The letter, said to be written by UD Songo secretary-general Pensar Jose, invited Muduhwa to Mozambique and required him to travel in possession of a COVID-19 certificate. However Highlanders chief executive Nhlanhla Dube said he had not seen the letter. “I’m only hearing this from you, honestly. If a letter was sent, then it would have been late yesterday (Saturday) or today (yesterday) because I was at the office yesterday for a while and I didn’t see anything,” he said. Sources have, however, said Muduhwa is not interested in travelling to Mozambique to UD Songo, who want to sign him for one year as he eyes playing for the Warriors in the African Nations Championships (Chan) tournament finals next year in Cameroon, where he could attract bigger clubs. The Chan tournament is for locally-based players. Muduhwa in September lost out on a deal to an unmentioned big club in Sudan reportedly because of a clash in agent representation at a time Manica Diamonds’ Last Jesi signed for Al Hilal, which also assessed FC Platinum’s Silas Songani who has since returned home. Muduhwa has reportedly attracted a number of clubs in South Africa and Zambia and his contract with Highlanders expires at the end of the year. He has also been targeted by FC Platinum and Chicken Inn locally. Bosso have lost key striker Prince Dube, who joined Tanzania’s Vodacom Premier League side Azam FC and midfielder Brian Banda, who jumped ship to FC Platinum last month after his contract expired in June. Also on the move after his contract expired in June is striker Tinashe Makanda, who is said to have put pen to paper with Dynamos, but the player has refuted the claims.

TENSIONS ran high at the Zanu PF Manicaland provincial co-ordination committee (PCC) meeting yesterday over failure by party bigwigs to announce names of candidates that had successfully submitted their curriculum vitaes to contest in the district co-ordination committee (DCC) elections. BY KENNETH NYANGANI Some members wanted the names to be released at the meeting to avoid rigging. The meeting, which was held at Marymount Teachers College in Mutare, was attended by several senior party officials who included Defence minister Oppah Muchinguri, Information minister Monica Mutsvangwa, Primary and Secondary Education minister Cain Mathema, who was the guest of honour, Manicaland Provincial Affairs minister Ellen Gwaradzimba and former Finance minister and Zanu PF acting spokesperson Patrick Chinamasa. The Zanu PF DCC elections are set to be held in a few weeks’ time around the country. A disgruntled Zanu PF member, who refused to be named, told NewsDay that they were expecting names of successful DCC candidates to be announced during the PCC meeting for the sake of transparency. “Why are they not unveiling the names? What was the motive of them coming to this meeting?” he said. Another member, who is eyeing a PCC position in Makoni district, weighed in, saying: “I think the best thing was to announce the names of successful candidates during the meeting as we fear the process might be rigged.” However, Zanu PF Manicaland provincial chairperson Mike Madiro, in his closing remarks, said the candidates will be announced through co-ordinators in the various districts. “Our leaders instructed that candidates contesting for DCC should not come to the PCC meeting,” Madiro said. In his speech, Mathema said the DCC elections should strengthen the ruling Zanu PF party. He also encouraged the candidates to desist from vote-buying. “The DCC elections should not be a reason to divide us, let’s walk as a united party. We don’t want vote-buying, we don’t want imposition of candidates. The elections should strengthen us than divide us and must also boost our party constitutionalism,” Mathema said.

The elections should strengthen us than divide us and must also boost our party constitutionalism,” Mathema said.","MaxDetailCharacters":300,"ImageUrl":"https://cdn.blackfacts.net/uploads/blackfacts/facts/2020/11/0369d558-25fa-4ef7-af40-a7359946fb49.jpg","ImageHeight":330,"ImageWidth":600,"ImageOrientation":"landscape","HasImage":true,"CssClass":"","Layout":"","Rowspan":1,"Colspan":1,"Likes":0,"Shares":0,"ContentSourceId":"7B933AE8-03CD-4CB2-9499-82145E19CFCF","SourceName":"NewsDay Zimbabwe - Everyday News for Everyday People","ContentSourceRootUrl":"https://www.newsday.co.zw","ContentSourceIcon":null,"SponsorId":null,"IsSponsored":false,"SponsorName":null,"SmallSponsorLogoUrl":null,"SponsorUrl":null,"HasSmallSponsorLogo":false,"EffectiveDate":null,"HasEffectiveDate":false,"MonthAbbrevName":null,"FormattedDate":null,"Year":null,"Month":null,"Day":null,"LastUpdatedDate":"2023-11-25T05:14:39.027","LastUpdatedBy":null,"IsEditable":false,"InsertAd":false,"JSONFactData":"{\"date\":\"2020-11-02T04:00:46Z\"}","JsonExtData":{"date":{"ValueKind":3}},"Html":null,"Css":null,"Script":null,"ScriptHash":null,"Id":181235,"FactUId":"18433F9E-B5F5-4734-A5DF-25CDC1C37A2D","Slug":"tensions-high-at-zanu-pf-pcc-meeting","FactType":"News","VirtualSiteSlug":"blackfacts","Title":"Tensions high at Zanu PF PCC meeting","LocalFactUrl":"/fact/tensions-high-at-zanu-pf-pcc-meeting","ResultCount":200,"SearchType":"OmniSearch.RelatedId"},{"FadeSummary":true,"SponsorRedirectUrl":null,"SourceRedirectUrl":"https://ai.blackfacts.com/redirect/ContentSource/df687784-fa62-4864-8b12-bf6887adb209/31624a3b-97ce-496e-a766-a72eba96716b/https%3A%2F%2Fblacknewschannel.com","DisplayText":"

TRANSPARENCY International Zimbabwe (TIZ) has decried sextortion of women at water collection points, saying that corrupt public officials were taking advantage of vulnerable women seeking water to sexually exploit them. BY LORRAINE MUROMO In their latest report on gender and corruption released this week, the TIZ said sextortion happened at boreholes and other open sources where women usually flock in search of water. This comes after several reports indicated that women were being abused while searching for water in Harare’s Mabvuku and Tafara high-density suburbs. “Most urban areas in Zimbabwe are experiencing water shortages. This is partly attributed to corruption in the sector, as resources meant to rehabilitate water infrastructure are diverted to non-essential acquisitions such as purchasing motor vehicles for public officials,” the TIZ report read. “While some households in the middle- to low-density areas have managed to drill boreholes, the ordinary women are left with no choice but to look for alternative sources of water at community boreholes and other open sources … further widening the gender inequality and looking for further alternative sources of water which has further exposed women to another form of gendered corruption known as sextortion,” it said. The report said Zimbabwe was ranked as number 126 out of 162 countries on the gender inequality index, whereby, structural and institutional barriers, formal and informal political systems and general cultural perceptions continue to widen the gap between men and women, thus contributing to a difference in impact of policies. They said there was need for feminisation of the anti-corruption discourse so that women also became active in democratic processes. “Corruption in the health sector has also exacerbated the plight of women in Zimbabwe. Due to their roles as primary care-givers, women are in most instances the ones attending to the health needs of their families and thus interact with and rely on public health institutions. Corruption in general has contributed to the dilapidated state of public health institutions both in terms of infrastructure and availability of medicines, thus exerting added pressures on women to find alternatives.” The anti-corruption lobby group said due to their unique reproductive and sexual health needs, women relied more on health facilities where the impact of corruption in Zimbabwe is amplified as they seek healthcare. “For example, seven out of 10 babies at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals were stillborn. This was at a time nurses and doctors were on strike protesting for better working conditions. Corruption in this regard also has a bearing on the infant mortality rate,” TIZ said. lFollow Lorraine on Twitter @lorrainemuromo

Suspected Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels freed more than 1,300 prisoners in an assault on a jail in Beni, eastern Democratic Republic Congo.

Only about 100 prisoners after the attack on Kagbayi prison on Tuesday morning.

The ADF are a Ugandan rebel group with bases in eastern Congo.

\"We had a count before the escape of 1,456 (prisoners), 110 (of them) stayed and I thank them for that. Some 20 (escapees) have already returned and I know that others are on their way back. We'll do a tally, and work out how many have come back\", said Modeste  Bakwanamaha, the mayor of Beni.

Kagbayi prison is used to hold errant army soldiers and militiamen captured in fighting, including some from the ADF.

Jail breaks are common in Congo where conditions in detention facilities are said to be very bad.
