Impactfromstatetostatevariesbasedlargelyonthenumberofcommercialoperationswithineachstate.InOhio,justonebackyardflockand20birdswereaffected.InneighboringPennsylvania,closeto4millionbirdshavebeendestroyed.Worsestill,Iowa,whichhadthehighestnumberofchickensofanyU.S.statein2021with60millionheads,hasbeenthemostseverelyimpactedintermsofquantity,losingalittlemorethan13millionbirdssincetheviruswasfirstreportedinacommercialturkeyflockinIndianainFebruary2022. TheimpactoftheoutbreakisbeingfeltbymanyAmericansatthegrocerystore.AccordingtotheUSDA’sFoodPriceOutlookforApril2022,poultrypricesarepredictedtoincreasebetween7.5%and8.5%,andeggpricesarepredictedtoincreasebetween6%and7%due,inpart,todecreasedproductionatsomeofthecountry’sbiggestcommercialflocks.
