Asked about a 16-month old pledge to farmers by co-founder Patrice Motsepe, his foundation says it is still talking to traditional leaders.
Reggae Sunsplash, founded in 1978 to promote a slow summer tourist season in Jamaica, was the first Caribbean music festival to introduce reggae to a global audience. The idea of the festival originated with a group of young entrepreneurs who called themselves Synergy. They were led by Tony Johnson, an urban planning project manager, but also included Ronnie Burke, a record company owner, Don Green, a systems analyst, businesswoman Maxine Walters, and John Wakeling, a radio talk show host. Although only Burke had a background in the music industry, they were all passionate about Jamaican reggae music and believed it had an audience far beyond the island.
In early January 1978 Synergy approached the Jamaican Tourist Board to promote their idea. The Board embraced the concept mainly because it wanted to attract tourists to Jamaica in the summer. Until that point the country’s largest industry, tourism, had revolved around winter destination hotels and resorts. The hope was that a summer music festival would attract people to fill the hotels during the off season.
Soon leading Jamaican musicians such as Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff embraced the idea and promised to participate. The first concert, an eight day event beginning on June 28, 1978, had as headliners the band Third World, Bob Andy, and Toots and the Maytals. They performed at Jarrett Park in Montego Bay attracting an average daily audience of 16,000.
Word about Reggae Sunsplash began to spread among Jamaican immigrants living in the United States, Canada, and Great Britain. It was also promoted by the disk jockeys and international journalists who had attended the inaugural festival. By the time of the second festival in 1979, over 100 journalists from Japan, Italy, Sweden, West Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States, attended along with a mostly international crowd of about 10,000. They heard Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Third World, and Burning Spear.
In year three, 1980, the festival was reduced to six days and occurred
Since the first democratic election in South Africa in 1994, a number of changes have been made to geographical names in the country. It can get a bit confusing, as mapmakers struggle to keep up, and road signs arent immediately changed. In many instances, the new names were existing ones used by parts of the population; others are new municipal entities. All name changes have to be approved by the South African Geographical Names Council, which is responsible for standardizing geographical names in South Africa.
One of the first major changes was the redivision of the country into eight provinces, rather than the existing four (Cape Province, Orange Free State, Transvaal, and Natal ). The Cape Province divided into three (Western Cape, Eastern Cape, and Northern Cape), the Orange Free State became the Free State, Natal was renamed KwaZulu-Natal, and the Transvaal was divided into Gauteng, Mpumalanga (initially Eastern Transvaal), Northwest Province, and Limpopo Province (initially Northern Province).
Gauteng, which is the industrial and mining heartland of South Africa, is a Sesotho word meaning at the gold. Mpumalanga means the east or the place where the sun rises, an apt name for South Africas eastern-most province. (To pronounce the Mp, imitate how the letters are said in the English word jump.) Limpopo is also the name of the river forming the northern-most boundary of South Africa.
Among the towns renamed were some named after leaders significant in Afrikaner history. So Pietersburg, Louis Trichard, and Potgietersrust became, respectively, Polokwane, Makhoda, and Mokopane (the name of a king). Warmbaths changed to Bela-Bela, a Sesotho word for hot spring.
Other changes include:
Several new municipal and megacity boundaries have been created. The City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality covers cities such as Pretoria, Centurion, Temba, and Hammanskraal. The Nelson Mandela Metropole covers the East London/Port Elizabeth area.
Cape Town is known as eKapa. Johannesburg is called eGoli,

The Department of Health announced the country has recorded 6 579 new Covid-19 infections, the highest number yet in 24 hours.
The number of confirmed positive cases now stands at 118 375, exactly 113 days since the country recorded its first case.
\"We wish to express our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the healthcare workers who treated the deceased,\" Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said.
The number of recoveries is 59 974, which translates to a recovery rate of 50.7%.
The number of tests conducted so far stands at 1 460 012, while recoveries are 59 974 which translate to a recovery rate of 50.7%.
The first three surveys received between 5 500 and 9 365 responses, while the latest poll registered 5 293 responses, reflecting responses from around 23% of schools nationally, the unions said.
Although the Department of Basic Education (DBE), led by minister Angie Motshekga and her director general Mathanzima Mweli, has been adamant all was in good order for the reopening of schools – and Covid-19 protocols would be followed with models in place to ensure there was no more than 50% of pupils on school premises – the unions' survey suggests teachers were still facing serious challenges at many schools.
\"In only two provinces have more than 80% of schools been able to construct a timetable for when the next grades return that allows a 1.5 metre distance between learners in classrooms,\" read the results report.
The report states: \"In 8 provinces, less than 54% of schools have subject teams or phase teams been able to meet and review the curriculum guidance received from national and province for the returning grades.
\"In 8 provinces, less than 48% of schools have all subject teams or phase teams planned their teaching for the returning grades in terms of the curriculum guidance received for the returning grades.\"
South Africa recorded 853 new Covid-19 infections by Tuesday and 130 new Covid-19-related deaths, taking the confirmed death toll to 53 887.
South Africa on Wednesday reported 1,673 Covid-19 cases, the highest daily increase since the country reported its first case in early March.
On Wednesday, the country's caseload has reached 25,937, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said in his daily update.
The country also reported 28 new deaths from Covid-19, taking the national total to 552, Mkhize said.
Despite the rapid spread of the pandemic, the country is preparing to ease the lockdown from level four to level three, starting from June 1.
Also on Wednesday, the country's Ministry of Health warned that harsher lockdown restrictions could be re-introduced at Covid-19 hotspots in the country if interventions fail to contain the pandemic in these areas after June 1.
The country breached the one million mark for Covid-19 tests, with 1 028 399 conducted as of 11 June.
According to a statement by Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, 29 999 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours.
Of the more than one million tests performed to date, 52% were done in public laboratories, while 48% were in the private sector.
Mkhize said a further 74 Covid-19-related deaths have been recorded, bringing the death toll to 1 284, which translated to a mortality rate of 2.2%.
\"We extend our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank healthcare workers who treated the deceased,\" Mkhize said.
We believe that within the coming days, Gauteng will emerge with the highest Covid-19 numbers
“We are seeing a rapid rise in the cumulative number of positive Covid-19 cases, indicating that, as we had expected, we are approaching a surge during the latter winter months of July and August,” health minister Zweli Mkhize, said.

“In addition to regular hand washing, social distancing and the correct wearing of masks at all times, early case detection, contact tracing, quarantine and isolation are the key armaments we have in our toolbox to break the cycle of infection,” Mkhize said.
We expect that all provinces will start experiencing an increase in the number of Covid-19 cases – even those with low numbers now
“Our concern is that this continues to exacerbate the risk of spread of infections in communities, especially in households where it is practically impossible to self-isolate, given the limited space.”
Complaints
“As in other provinces, carriers of coronavirus seed infection into spaces where people congregate, and so we have also seen a number of cluster outbreaks in Eastern Cape,” Mkhize said.
Masks are being abandoned or not worn properly, and there is laxity setting in around frequent hand-washing
Hotpots, he said, need reinforcements and health intervention teams will be deployed for additional capacity so that the outbreak response matches the rise in numbers.
