FINANCE minister Mthuli Ncube will tomorrow issue the 2020 mid-term fiscal review statement at a time opposition MPs and the citizenry are demanding answers to the country’s deteriorating economic situation. By Veneranda Langa “I wish to inform the House that the Minister of Finance will present the 2020 Fiscal Term Review on Thursday,” Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Tsitsi Gezi announced yesterday. But Dzivarasekwa MP Edwin Mushoriwa (MDC Alliance) raised a point of order saying Ncube had disappointed MPs by failing to turn up in Parliament to respond to questions pertaining to the economy, which he might not effectively address in the fiscal review statement. “Madam Speaker, you will recall that several MPs in this House have in the past called upon the Minister of Finance to come to this House to answer questions from ordinary MPs,” Mushoriwa said. “You know the procedure in the fiscal review statement that it does not entail that MPs ask questions regarding the economy and the number of changes that the minister has been making.” Mushoriwa added: “Honourable Ncube is disregarding this Parliament and is disrespectful to the chair of the Speaker. Measures need to be taken to curtail the behaviour of the minister.” But Gezi said Ncube would combine the fiscal mid-term review statement with issues on the state of the economy. Mushoriwa said there were a lot of inconsistencies on fiscal policies, citing the demand for payment of registration of vehicles in United States dollars. “Just a few days ago, Treasury said in order to register a vehicle, one needs to pay in US$ in a country where the majority of people earn in local currency,” Mushoriwa lamented.
