BY LIFE & STYLE REPORTER FORMER Prince Edward School senior jazz band member Takakunda Mukundu (pictured) is set to release his debut album — Chronicles of a Culture Kid — today. The son to veteran music producer Clive “Mono” Mukundu, Takakunda worked with his friends on the 11-track album recorded at his father’s Monolio Studios. According to Mono, the album features Naphtali Muvandikwa (bass), Joseph Chinouriri and Stephen Mapaso on sax, Madhiwali Dzuwa (drums), Teddy Wengoma (percussion) and Archford Sunguro (keyboard). Mono said he also featured on a few songs from the album where he played the bass guitar and keyboards. “He (Takakunda) started working on the album in 2014. Right now he has shot one video with Vusa Blaqs to be released on 25 August, his birthday,” Mono said yesterday. Takakunda started off as a percussionist and drummer as a Form 1 pupil at Prince Edward School in 2012 before joining the senior jazz band as a drummer and percussionist. Following advice from his mother who had seen him struggling with the percussions and drums, Takakunda switched to the guitar under his father’s tutelage in 2013. “By 2014, he had improved a lot. I started taking him to radio shows to advertise him and he got noticed by a number of artistes,” Mono said, adding that he then advised him to join fellow musician Gary Tight whose band had members of his age. In 2016, Takakunda enrolled at the Zimbabwe College of Music for a two-year national diploma in music. He currently plays for Zimpraise, Ammara Brown and Sabastian Magacha among several other artistes.
