The fertilized egg, now called an embryo, is returned to the woman’s womb to develop. This procedure was first successfully carried out in 1978 by Drs. Steptoe and Edwards of Oldham General Hospital in the UK after over two decades of research, which led to the birth of Baby Louise Brown, the world’s first ‘test tube’ baby.
