Between the Lines :Phillip Chidavaenzi Title: The Scars Beneath Our Bracelets Author: Tariro Matibiri Publisher: Royalty Books (2020) ISBN: 978-1-77725-238-8 INTELLECTUAL property expert Tariro Matibiri documents women’s life experiences and how the scars from their battles are often hidden beneath their bracelets. This is about drawing priceless lessons from every life experience. Matibiri uses anecdotes like slices from different women’s lives to drive her message home: the dreamy newly-wed who is accidentally confronted by her husband’s cheating ways, the woman whose treasured friendship collapses in inexplicable circumstances, the young woman trying to map out her life after high school only to realise she lacks the necessary cartographical skill to do so. The author integrates her life experiences and those of other women in the book and emphasises that the nuggets you find scattered throughout the book like gold dust are culled from “life’s harshest moments; hers, and those of others”. The wisdom shared throughout the book will enable the reader to reflect on them and grow as a person. The author’s desire is to usher the reader to that place where they are able to improve their life emotionally. Matibiri is able to seamlessly integrate women’s life experiences into her writing, like that young woman whose dream marriage, perceived through rose-tinted spectacles, crashes down on the rocks of reality after discovering that her husband is seeing another woman behind her back. We also get to appreciate how women are often torn between two unpalatable choices: continuing with a casanova husband or dealing with the reality of being a single mother, itself an uncomfortable position in a society that is quick to pass judgments. The blame game in which everyone else tends to justify the husband’s actions, almost blaming the woman for the man’s cheating ways, is meticulously portrayed. And such knowledge must allow us to introspect concerning the roles we have played in that blame game. Another anecdote is about the collapse of a decade-long friendship. Matibiri writes: “Over the years, I have made and lost friends, largely because of miscommunication and distance, but lately I have come to understand that not everyone you start your life with will stick with you until the end. To embrace this, I have learnt the power in reaching out to ghosted friends to clear the air and move on. Where the process is unappreciated, I have learnt to respect the space that someone is in without allowing it to reflect who I am not.” (pp11). “Many times, our focus when we talk about love is on a romantic level or concerning our family. These past decades, and as an area of continuous growth, my focus when it comes to learning about love is with my female friends.” (pg11) You continue to grow into who you are destined to be. I hope you find the strength to forgive yourself for friendships lost and broken bonds. May you be at peace with the realisation that not everyone will walk with you until the end of your journey. Honour the lessons lea

The Los Angeles Dodgers and the Tampa Bay Rays are facing off in the World Series. With the coronavirus pandemic, it's a Fall Classic the likes of which we have never seen before.
A limited number of fans are being allowed to attend, and it's the first time the best-of-seven series is being played on a neutral site — the newly opened Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.
This is the 20th World Series appearance for the Dodgers, who competed for the title in three of the last four years. The team won six times, but not since 1988.
It's just the second time the Rays have made it to the World Series, which they won in 2008.

BY MOSES MATENGA/HARRIET CHIKANDIWA PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa is tomorrow expected to address several challenges facing the country when he delivers his State of the Nation Address (Sona). This comes amid a crisis that has seen civil servants declaring incapacitation. His address will coincide with the opening of the Third Session of the Ninth Parliament and sets the government’s legislative agenda for the coming session. The Apex Council, an umbrella body for all civil servants bodies, said the President must “give us a signal” of where the country is going by prioritising the starving government workers. “The State of the Nation is very much excluding government workers,” Apex Council spokesperson David Dzatsunga said. “We have expectations that we hope the President will address. “We wait to see how the government reacts to a crisis in education where the government is failing to pay the teachers. In fact, the generality of civil servants are not happy and he has to give us a signal of where we are going.” Progressive Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe president Takavafira Zhou said Mnangagwa must show leadership in addressing the plight of the teachers. “We expect the President to open dialogue with teachers so that he is fully apprised about the situation in schools,” Zhou said. “We also expect the President to urge the Finance minister (Mthuli Ncube) to allocate more resources to the education sector for the welfare of teachers and prioritisation of pupils and teachers' health and safety.” He said the President must also address the issue of peace and stability which is key in the development of any sector. “We expect the President to address how as a nation we can rekit our industries, enhance productivity and export so that the state can boost its coffers. The President must also address the issue of peace and stability in the country that are prerequisites for sustainable development.” Community Working Group on Health executive director Itai Rusike said they expect Mnangagwa to fulfil promises he has been making. “We hope that President Mnangagwa will fulfil the promises that he made in his election manifesto to the people of Zimbabwe,” Rusike said. Johannes Marisa, president of the Medical and Dental Medical Private Practitioners of Zimbabwe said: “The President should address the longstanding concerns and grievances of health workers by coming out with concrete solutions for the conditions of services for the health workers.” “Provision of PPE (personal protective equipment) for the frontline health workers needs to be addressed for the safety of the health workforce and their clients,” he said. MDC Alliance deputy spokesperson Clifford Hlatywayo said there was little to expect from Mnangagwa’s Sona. “We are not expecting anything but the usual rhetoric,” he said. MDC-T acting spokesperson Khalipani Phugeni said the President must show the same energy exhibited in combating COVID-19 in addressing the economy and service delivery issues.
BY PATRICIA SIBANDA/NQOBANI NDLOVU UNITED Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) acting chief executive officer Narcacius Dzvanga has revealed that the refurbishment of the city’s main COVID-19 facility was running behind schedule and it might not be ready for use by monthend as initially planned. Dzvanga made the remarks on Friday when the inter-ministerial taskforce on COVID-19 visited the health facility to assess progress. “We were targeting to open and admit our first patient by mid-October, but the engineers have written to us to say that they are unable to meet the deadline. Even up to the end of October we still remain hopeful that the west wing could start accommodating patients, maybe first of November but our wish was mid-October,” Dzvanga said. “The project is about 95% complete, it’s a 112-bedded hospital, with intensive care beds and 16 or 18 beds, will be what we call high dependency units, then the remainder will be oxygen beds meaning that the patients, just require oxygen and good nursing care. “We think by November 1 we could admit our first patient there, but at the moment we are lodging them somewhere on site and the numbers are very few. We get daily statistics. “It’s our wish to see patients being admitted there in the purpose-built or designed unit ward.” Dzvanga said they had modernised the ward by installing ventilation pipes and plugs on the verandas as a way of creating more space. “This office can be turned into intensive care, you just need the oxygen pipe, the ventilator and the nursing staff only. That is why you might find the ICU (intensive care unit) and the HDU, it’s exactly the same types that you saw on the veranda,” he said. “ICU is usually about ventilation, but the current trend internationally is that aggressive ventilation is said to be harmful so we are not pushing for most of the patients to be on ventilation.” In a related development, the Joshua Nkomo Legacy Restoration Project (JNLRP) said the planned reopening of Ekusileni Medical Centre next month would go a long way in restoring the late Father Zimbabwe’s legacy. Government has announced that Ekusileni, which has experienced several false starts since its closure in 2004, will be ready to admit patients in the next few weeks. Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga toured the institution recently where he committed to ensure its operationalisation. The National Social Security Authority (Nssa)-owned facility was converted into a COVID-19 treatment centre. “As a foundation, we welcome talk that the government has set a date for Ekusileni reopening. We hope it is serious this time around as this is not only about Nkomo’s legacy but it is for the benefit of the people in this region and beyond,” JNLRP director Jabulani Hadebe said. The JNLRP, founded and registered in 2018, seeks to promote and sustain Nkomo’s legacy. “However, we feel there is no political will with regards to anything to do with the Joshua Nkomo legacy. It is a fact that his legacy is unparalleled, but we have people in positions of authority who will always want to do

BY HARRIET CHIKANDIWA Harare provincial development co-ordinator Tafadzwa Muguti yesterday said government would descend on land barons parcelling out council land without approval, especially in Chitungwiza. Speaking during a tour of Chitungwiza Civic Centre at a ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of state-of-the-art offices at Chitungwiza town centre, Muguti said government was targeting land barons to bring back order to the dormitory town. Chitungwiza Municipality had previously threatened to demolish thousands of illegal structures in the town following revelations that some of the structures were built on wetlands and land earmarked for recreational facilities. However, the municipality shelved plans to demolish houses and other buildings in 35 illegal settlements across the town after a special full council meeting resolved to halt the contentious exercise. “The groundbreaking exercise is a show of strength of the central government and local community, to show land barons who is in charge of Chitungwiza,” Muguti said. “Chitungwiza Municipality is the one which is in charge, it is a great disappointment that State land has been parcelled out over the years without the signature of the Head of State, without the signature of the minister, I am hearing many people saying they have offer letters. “Let me tell the citizens and the residents of Chitungwiza that if the person who sold you land cannot guarantee you a title deed, it’s time you to wake up and ask yourself very serious questions.” He added: “Recently, there were demolitions in Chitungwiza and there was an outcry over human rights violations. Human rights violations do not apply when the law is broken. We have people that have taken the power of local authorities, some of them conniving with staff members to issue offer letters, offer letters are not title deeds,” Muguti said. He said Chitungwiza was sitting on 100% State land and for any development to take place, the State had to be involved. “To those who have broken the law, time is up we are coming after you, land barons, corruption shall not be tolerated in this new dispensation. We are very clear that vision attracts money, no one wants to invest in place where people do not want to respect property rights,” Muguti said. Meanwhile, Harare City Council has notified residents of the closure of Mbare Musika bus terminus for renovations and temporary use of alternative pick-up and drop-off points. “The City of Harare wishes to inform the public that Mbare Musika bus terminus is currently closed for renovations, the temporary rank shall only accommodate buses with COVID-19 compliance permits.” “The city, therefore, implores travellers and bus operators to comply and take due care so as to maintain orderliness and the safety of the travelling public.”
