Two of those who were true American heroes were recognized on Thursday, when the legacy of Jerome and John “Ellis” Edwards was commemorated at Historic Fort Steuben.
The Edwards brothers were members of the Tuskegee Airmen, African-American fighter pilots and support personnel who fought with distinction during World War II.
Edwards, who died in 1979, went on to fly multiple combat missions in an F86 Sabre Jet during the Korean War.
The Steubenville High School graduates are depicted on the city’s most recently completed mural, which stands alongside Washington Street, at about the halfway point between Fourth and Fifth streets.
Displays such as the murals that can be seen in many locations throughout the city and recognitions such as the one put together by Historic Fort Steuben are important components of that mission.
