KINGSTON – Prime Minister Andrew Holness on Sunday announced a State of Public Emergency in sections of the Corporate Area, stating that the current state of crime in some police divisions could spiral to “chaotic ends”.
During a press briefing, Holness said there has been an increase in gang activities in Kingston as well as extortion in the market district and the South Coast Highway project.
So far this year, the police say there has been an increase of nearly 100 percent in murders in the Kingston Western police division, adding that 22 more people were murdered up to June 6 when compared with a similar period last year.
The latest state of emergency means the entire capital has been placed under the security measure.
The State of Emergency will remain in effect for 14 days.
