COVID-19 disturbances have had a direct impact on most people’s mental health in one way or the other and the best way to treat anyone you meet is just to be kind because virtually everyone is under some sort of mental strain.
Whilst we may not all be trained to assist people when they get into such problems, the best thing that we can do this mental health awareness week and beyond is to be kind.
While that is a good development, online learning is a potential source of stress to learners coming from poor backgrounds where gadgets that connect to the internet are unavailable and data bundles are not affordable.
The national lockdown and restrictions on movements and gatherings put in place to contain the spread of the virus have a strong bearing on people’s mental health.
As we celebrate mental health awareness week, let us bear in mind that people around us are potentially under mental strain.

CONROY STERLING begged his mom, Joan Spence, not to break down and cry as he, twin Conrad, and adopted brother Rohan were repatriated to the island aboard the Adventure of the Seas cruise ship on Tuesday afternoon.
After months of quarantine in their cabins after the cruise industry sank amid the global coronavirus pandemic, the three men, along with more than 1,000 other Jamaican cruise ship workers, were reunited in their homeland via the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line ship that docked at the Falmouth Port in Trelawny.
None of the 1,044 crew members will be allowed to disembark the vessel until Thursday after being processed by immigration, customs and health officials, but that is fine with Spence, who drove approximately 130 kilometres from Portmore, St Catherine, to witness the heart-warming homecoming.
And like many other family members awaiting the outcome of the repatriation, Spence said she thought they were never coming home anytime soon.
After health surveillance and COVID-19 tests are completed, crew members will be accommodated at the Bahia Principe and Jewel Paradise Cove hotels in St Ann for at least three days while they await the results, Health and Wellness Minister Dr Christopher Tufton told The Gleaner last night.

PRIME Minister Andrew Holness says the Jamaican economy must now rapidly transition to online transactions, as the COVID-19 crisis has exposed the inefficiencies and riskiness of cash transactions.
The prime minister said governments have been slow to transition the economy to online platforms.
Holness again argued that the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for a comprehensive national identification system, stressing that the Government must be able to ascertain and verify the identity of, and account for the benefit provided to each person, not only to ensure that the right individuals are receiving benefits but to protect the general public good.
Furthermore, the prime minister said, having a standardised system of identification significantly reduces transaction costs and processing times.
Prime Minister Holness also pointed to the six-year-old flexible work arrangement legislation which, he said, facilitates some of the arrangements that have been made at this time.
(JIS): Leader of Government Business in the Upper House, Senator Kamina Johnson Smith, says the government will be providing a time line for the return of all Jamaicans on board cruise ships.
The seafarers, on board cruise ships and other vessels, have been stranded at sea, due to COVID-19 travel restrictions.
“The Government is working on scheduling the repatriation of the remaining seafarers out there and again, this is across nine ship lines and I would say easily, more than 115 ships, some of which are being consolidated even as we speak,” Johnson Smith said.
Ship workers, who test positive for COVID-19 are to be placed in state quarantine, while those who test negative will be allowed to self-quarantine at home for 14 days.
Johnson Smith said the government is committed to bringing all nationals home in a safe manner to protect the safety and health of the entire population and maintained that the state has never refused the entry of any vessel.
On the heels of last weekend’s titanic clash between dancehall artistes Beenie Man and Bounty Killer that captured the attention of international fans, media outlets, and industry players, there is a push for the two to be reissued with United States visas to promote Jamaican music and culture.
“This was a boost to our spirits, our tourism, our economy, our music, and, most importantly, Brand Jamaica,” international reggae artiste Shaggy, whose given name is Orville Burrell, said.
“It’s about time we rally the powers that be to free up these artistes …, allow them travelling visas and work permits so they can travel freely to promote our culture and represent our brand.
At the time, an email advisory was sent to airlines not to board the artiste, as well as three other deejays, as their visas were being revoked.
Several other dancehall acts are without a US visa, among them Popcaan and Tommy Lee Sparta.
The taking of COVID-19 samples by the Ministry of Health and Wellness from Jamaican ship workers who arrived in the island on Tuesday is to go on break on Saturday.
The Ministry’s public relations officer, Mexine Bessasor, told The Gleaner that the move is to allow for time to process the hundreds of samples that have already been taken, noting that the exercise will resume on Sunday.

The 1,044 Jamaican workers were repatriated aboard Royal Caribbean's Adventures of the Seas cruise ship on Tuesday afternoon and remains docked at the Falmouth cruise ship pier in Trelawny.
Holness said ship workers who test positive will go into state quarantine while those who test negative will be allowed to quarantine at home for 14 days.
Persons in home quarantine will have their location tracked and must do a video check-in multiple times a day, Holness said.
Davis Kizza Kana a.k.a Rasta Kana has 83 piercings on his body making him Uganda’s most pierced man.
Rasta Kana, who chose this lifestyle in 2000, says his favourite body piercings are the smile, vampire and nose rings.
Of course, it has also attracted scorn, abuse and physical attack as some people refer to his body art as madness.
Like tattoos, body piercing has an extensive history across both ancient and modern cultures.
While it is not uncommon for youth to decide that they want their ears pierced, others choose less conventional piercing locations such as tongues, noses, belly buttons, or even intimate body parts.
ALMOST 10,000 Jamaicans and non-nationals are expected to return home by the end of June under the Government's controlled re-entry programme.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness said Friday that, in addition to 2,500 Jamaicans already in the island, 3,000 more are to return between June 14, and the Government is estimating that based on the number of people who have applied and other non-Jamaicans who may want to re-enter, there is the likelihood of another 7,000 entries by the end of the month.
There will then be three categories of travellers: Category 1- Jamaican nationals, and non-nationals who are ordinarily resident in Jamaica by virtue of work permit or marriage, or being the dependent of a national; Category- 2 would be non-nationals visiting for the purpose of vacation (tourism); and Category-3, which are non-nationals who are business travellers.
Protocols for business travellers coming to Jamaica for less than 14 days will be required to be tested on arrival.
Protocols for visitors (tourists) will be similar to those for Jamaican nationals, except that tourists will be subjected to a “Stay in Zone” Order, or a geographical area which will be called the COVID-19 Resilience Corridor.

\t\tBillboard has named Beenie Man the champ of Saturday’s friendly clash named Bounty Killer the ‘People’s Champion’ for his “off-the-cuff adlibs and manic energy.”
The clash, which was they hailed as the first most exciting and entertaining of the Verzuz battles staged by Timbaland and Swizz Beatz so far, said Beenie Man had the edge in 13 rounds, based on its 26-round assessment, and Bounty triumphed in 10, with a tie in three rounds.
The Verzuz battles events are streamed weekly via IG Live on Instagram.
Billboard applauded the move, saying, “Considering the fact that Jamaican sound systems pioneered the sort of ‘beat battles’ have made Verzuz a social media sensation well over half a century ago, the creative decision was more than fitting.”
“By pitting two icons of the genre, Bounty Killer and Beenie Man in head-to-head competition, this Verzuz battle did not just showcase two of its most respected lyricists ever to hold a microphone, it also tapped into an epic rivalry that stretches back more than a quarter of a century.”

Lyrics:
When I say goodbye it is never for long
Cause I know our love still lives on
It will be again exactly like it was
Cause I believe in the power of love
When youre close I can feel the power
When its love I can always tell
Love for me is the best thing now
Its something that I know so well
Hold me closer and every minute
Of every hour, feel the power of love, yeah
Hold me tighter and take me higher
And feel the fire of the power of love

Makaka, who worked at Royal Media Services' as the Business Manager in charge of Hot 96, is said to have rammed a trailer on Mombasa road.
\"It is with great sadness that we announce the passing on of our colleague Allan Makaka, Business Manager in the Commercial department through a tragic road accident,\" the company said on Saturday morning in a memo to staff.
The accident occurred on Mombasa Road, a highway listed on a recent report by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) as having accounted for a high number of accidents since January.
NTSA however, says there were fewer accidents nationally since January as compared to last year, in what is attributed to stringent measures to contain COVID-19, including the dusk to dawn curfew because most accidents occur at night.
In the same period under review, some 2,151 people sustained serious injuries compared to 1,844 in 2019 while 1,636 were slightly injured since January compared to 1,363 last year.
