“A request has been made to the Government to continue with this facility until the end of 2020 so that sites can continue to practise social distancing, but more importantly, keep workers safe and employed,” said Gloria Henry, president of the GSAJ, formerly the Business Process Industry Association of Jamaica.

The temporary closure of all non-essential BPO operations across the island for 14 days will expire on June 4, but with companies realising significant savings in operational costs, some are considering broadening the work-at-home service.

Daryl Vaz, who heads the BPO caucus of the Government’s Economic Recovery Task Force, has approved several new protocols to ensure that all operators implement preventative measures against the transmission of COVID-19.

“As much as 89 of the country’s 91 BPOs have been inspected, and the number of satisfactory ones, so far, is 57,” Vaz told a recent COVID-19 press conference at Jamaica House, adding that those numbers should increase gradually as inspections were ongoing.

“Jamaica is a natural fit for business process and knowledge process and global-services operations, and we will intensify our efforts in this regard, which will include improvements to our legal and regulatory framework and expanding our investment portfolio in the infrastructure to support the BPO industry,” Holness said.

A YEAR shy of her 20th anniversary as a member of parliament, Shahine Robinson, 66, has died having lost her battle with lung cancer.

Until her sudden illness in October, last year, Shahine Robinson was well-known in Jamaican politics and had been affectionately considered the darling of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP).

Robinson was, in fact, one of the most recognisable women in the governing JLP, who would from time to time unleash political fury on rival, the People’s National Party, despite her usually calm demeanour.

Robinson then pulled off another exciting win at the national polls in 2002 for the North East St Ann seat which brought joy to the JLP.

Former Prime Minister PJ Patterson also paid tribute to Robinson, mentioning that in 2019, after his accident, Robinson had wished him full recovery while he was being discharged from hospital.

Back in 2012 when Davis Kizza Kana was interviewed by a Ugandan media, he had 32 piercings on his body.

Today, the dancer, model and fitness instructor, otherwise known as Rasta Kana, has 83 piercings, making him the most pierced man in Uganda.

Nose piercing, which is still a common practice among the Berber and Bedouin people of North Africa and the Middle East, determines the wealth of a family.

The unique art of lip piercing and stretching is still prevalent in Africa among the Mursi people in Ethiopia who have plates infused to their piercings mostly for aesthetics.

Currently, people get piercings for various reasons such as aesthetic appeal, self-expression and sexual pleasure, with the world’s most pierced man being Rolf Buchholz, from Dortmund, Germany, who has 480 piercings.

ALMOST 10,000 Jamaicans and non-nationals are expected to return home by the end of June under the Government's controlled re-entry programme.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness said Friday that, in addition to 2,500 Jamaicans already in the island, 3,000 more are to return between June 14, and the Government is estimating that based on the number of people who have applied and other non-Jamaicans who may want to re-enter, there is the likelihood of another 7,000 entries by the end of the month.

There will then be three categories of travellers: Category 1- Jamaican nationals, and non-nationals who are ordinarily resident in Jamaica by virtue of work permit or marriage, or being the dependent of a national; Category- 2 would be non-nationals visiting for the purpose of vacation (tourism); and Category-3, which are non-nationals who are business travellers.

Protocols for business travellers coming to Jamaica for less than 14 days will be required to be tested on arrival.

Protocols for visitors (tourists) will be similar to those for Jamaican nationals, except that tourists will be subjected to a “Stay in Zone” Order, or a geographical area which will be called the COVID-19 Resilience Corridor.

(Jamaica Gleaner) CIBC First Caribbean Interna-tional Bank, which operates in Jamaica and throughout the region, recorded a net loss of US$110 million for the April second quarter, due to the impact of COVID-19 on its operations.

It’s the first big bank with Canadian connections to post a net loss.

Scotiabank Caribbean made a profit of CDN$46 million for the quarter down, from CDN$171 million a year earlier; and RBC Bank also recorded a profit for its Caribbean segment, which also included its US operations.

“The quarter’s financial results were negatively affected by items of note, including US$100 million of provision for credit losses, a non-cash goodwill impairment charge of US $51 million and income tax credits of US$7.6 million,” FirstCaribbean CEO Colette Delaney said in a statement released with the financial report.

The Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA) says the planned reopening of the island's borders to international travellers on June 15 is an opportunity for a return to normality for the more than 300,000 workers and businesses that depend on tourism for a living.

The JHTA, in a news release on the weekend, said it had been an active participant over the last three months with the Tourism Recovery Task Force and other stakeholder groups towards a sustainable recovery of the tourism sector.

The protocols, which have been endorsed by the World Travel and Tourism Council and won kudos from the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association, mandates all licensed tourism businesses to implement, with great detail, cleaning and sanitation requirements.

Noting that the industry is scheduled to open in phases, starting with a Government-defined corridor from Negril in the west to Port Antonio in the east, along with Kingston, the JHTA said it supports the requirement for every tourism business to receive approval from the Tourism Product Development Company Limited (TPDCo) to reopen.

“With the financial devastation being experienced by the over 300,000 tourism workers as well as the businesses that employ them, we know it is now time to get our industry back to work,” the JHTA said.

When the governor established a statewide stay-at-home order, this signaled to many that he was making an effort to put people and public health before business.

The Governor’s confidence in the roll-out of phase-one was based on assessments done by the Maryland Department of Health which tracked data surrounding hospitalizations.

While hospitalization has plateaued, and at times, made dedicated decreases over the last few weeks, the Maryland Department of Health data offers receipts that make it very clear now is not the time to let up on strict social distancing and restrictions on non-essential activities.

While Blacks make up 30 percent of the Maryland population, they account for 40 percent of COVID confirmed cases and 43 percent of deaths, for which data is available.

Yet again, Black communities are disproportionately the hardest hit across the state and stand to be further exposed to COVID, hospitalization and related death as a result of the governor’s Executive Order.

Yes, Dusty Baker was there, in the on-deck circle on an April night in 1974 in Atlanta when Hank Aaron hit the home run that vaulted him past Babe Ruth and into American sports history.

But on the list of historically significant moments that Baker witnessed live and in person of an iconic African-American vaulting from mere fame to legend, the Aaron moment –unfathomably –might have to rank second.

As he chronicles in his engaging new memoir “Kiss the Sky: My Weekend in Monterey at the Greatest Concert Ever” (Wellstone Books), Baker was also there on a June day in Monterey in 1967 when a guitarist named Jimi Hendrix took the stage and delivered a set that many rock fans consider one of the greatest live rock ‘n’ roll performances ever. When Hendrix dropped to his knees and set his guitar on fire, he moved into rock music immortality.

The famous Monterey Pop Festival serves as the fulcrum for the story of the early years of Baker, who achieved his own fame on the baseball diamond, first as an All-Star outfielder for the Los Angeles Dodgers and other teams, and later as the manager of the San Francisco Giants, as well as with other teams.

“Kiss the Sky” is Baker’s account of his life before all that, growing up in the Southern California city of Riverside, almost home to his friend and fellow rising star Bobby Bonds –Baker relates in the book that held Bobby’s son Barry in his arms as an infant. At the age of 15, he moved with his family to the Sacramento area, right about the time that Northern California was becoming the epicenter for the hippie subculture.

Reached by phone between stints working as an analyst for TBS during the Major League Baseball playoffs, Baker, who comes to Bookshop Santa Cruz Oct. 28, said he had no clue that Monterey Pop would go down in history as the one of the high marks in rock history.

“At the time, it was really no big deal,” he said. “It was just another happening. We got to concerts almost weekly some place, in Davis, at Sac State, at the Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento, at

MINISTER of Local Government and Community Development Desmond McKenzie says the island's municipal corporations will be rolling out the first phase of their disaster risk mitigation programme in two weeks, for the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season, which begins on June 1.

Speaking at a digital town hall meeting from his mnistry on Thursday, McKenzie said the programme is geared towards the comprehensive cleaning of drains and gullies managed by municipal corporations.

He said the initiative will coincide with a national drain-cleaning programme announced by Prime Minister Andrew Holness during a virtual meeting of the National Disaster Risk Management Council, on Wednesday.

“The municipal corporations are now in the process of rolling out the first phase of their mitigation programme, which is to commence shortly... [and] will be supported by the National Works Agency,” McKenzie said.

Additionally, McKenzie pointed out that a virtual meeting will be held with the island's mayors and parish disaster coordinators, “to look at how extensive and how advanced the plans are for the upcoming hurricane season”.

Jamaica: Quarantined returnees by air ‘pushed to back of the line’ behind 1,000 cruise ship workers

(Jamaica Gleaner) The 200 Jamaicans who arrived via air from New York and Fort Lauderdale on May 13 are accusing the Government of giving preferential treatment to the 1,044 Adventure of the Seas cruise ship workers who have already been processed a mere week after docking in Falmouth.

The second test would determine who departs for home this Thursday, May 28,” one of the persons under quarantine lamented.

All ship workers have disembarked the Adventure and hundreds who tested negative have been released to self-quarantine at home.

PRIME Minister Andrew Holness was among Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) officials who paid tribute to former mayor of May Pen Milton Brown, who died peacefully yesterday.

A highly respected politician at the local government level, Brown had been councillor for the Mineral Heights Division since 1998, and mayor of May Pen between 2003 and 2012.

Recently elected Member of Parliament for Clarendon South Eastern, which also includes Mineral Heights, Pearnel Charles Jr, said he felt “great sadness” in confirming Brown's death.

We take comfort in knowing Councillor Brown lived a full life and made impacting contributions to his family, friends, South East Clarendon, and the Jamaica Labour Party,” he said.

“We are grateful for the time he gave us and for all the sweat and effort he put into the development of South East Clarendon, the entire parish, the Jamaica Labour Party, and the people of Jamaica.

Leader of the Opposition, Dr Peter Phillip, says he strongly rejects claims from Prime Minister Andrew Holness that the United Kingdom prison offer to Jamaica was implicitly refused by the People’s National Party (PNP) administration.

But, this was rebuffed by Phillips in a statement this afternoon and he accused Holness of using the UK prison offer debate as “a feeble attempt at blaming others for the deteriorating prison conditions and lack of proper governance of  correctional facilities.”

The Leader of the Opposition, Dr Peter Phillip, M.P., says there needs to be no controversy over the UK offer to assist Jamaica in building a new correctional facility, as the Cabinet Office and Ministries of National Security and Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade have the records which can be made public.

In a statement this afternoon, Dr Phillips said the Opposition repudiates in the strongest terms, the account given to the nation by the Prime Minister that the offer was implicitly rejected by the PNP Administration, through a lack of follow up of the MOU signed by both countries, and was therefore inactive when his government took office.

Dr Phillips said Prime Minister Holness should recall that he had vociferously opposed the prison offer from as early as during the official visit of British Prime Minister David Cameron in November 2015 and repeated his opposition many times during the 2016 general election campaign.
