The Development Bank of Latin America (CAF) will support the digitalisation process of the online tax payment system being implemented by the government.
In a press release on Tuesday, CAF said the agreement was formalised with the signing of the technical co-operation.
CAF said it is \"intended to increase and improve the ease of payment of tax obligations for individuals and companies by supporting legal, regulatory and change management initiatives that are key to the digitisation of the online tax payment in the country.\"
The agreement was signed virtually at the end of the meeting of CAF's board of directors by Finance Minister Colm Imbert and CAF executive president Sergio Díaz-Granados.
The release said this technical co-operation will evaluate the functional needs of an online payment method for customs duties and other fees administered by the Customs and Special Taxes Division; support the standardisation of legal agreements between the TT authorities and the commercial banking system; and ensure a secure and resilient digital system to support the online tax payment system in the Internal Revenue Division, among other things.
In the last four years (2016-2020), CAF approved operations for TT for a total of US$1,151 million, which represents an average of US$288 million per year, accompanied by agreements on technical assistance such as the one signed on Tuesday and creating knowledge.

As the world commemorates the UN’s Anti-Corruption Day, the office of the Attorney General and the Anti-Corruption Investigation Bureau have teamed up for a social media campaign to address corrupt practices.
Anti-Corruption Day is marked on December 9.
The partnership aims to raise awareness and sensitise the public as part of a national Anti-Corruption Risk Assessment Programme. The social media campaign can be found by searching the hashtag #thatiscorruption and the slogan “Get to Zero… For a Corruption Free T&T.”
In a media release on Wednesday, the partnership, which also includes the UN Development Programme (UNDP), said the campaign includes promoting Crime Stoppers’ call-in number 800 TIPS to report corrupt actions locally.
“Locally, for the year ending October 2021, over 840 reports of corruption were received by the ACIB. None of the reports on record was made using the 800-TIPS system. The anonymous hotline has traditionally been associated with reporting violent crimes, not white-collar crimes or corruption.”
Snr Supt Deryck Walker of the ACIB is quoted as saying the unit was never promoted as an anti-corruption tool.
“Corruption is not treated as a crime that devastates lives. However, the hotline has played a significant part in combatting violent crime, and it holds the same potential for bribery, fraud, extortion, embezzlement and nepotism.”
The release said with public-sector officers as the main target, the programme seeks to identify threats corruption poses to covid19 recovery efforts with the aim of developing measures to prevent and negate such offences.
In June the Auditor General noted over $8 million was lost after citizens accessed both the salary relief grant and the income support grant. The report said over 2,000 people took advantage of the system put in place to address loss of earning as a result of the pandemic.
Last week Lystra Irving, a senior public servant at the Inland Revenue Division, was charged with stealing $1.49 million and multiple other offices after allegedly falsifying government records.
The release said the theme of this year’s Anti-Corruption Day is to highlight the rights and responsibilities of everyone
in tackling corruption.
“This year’s commemoration also promotes the need to unite and face this global problem with shared responsibility. Every person - young and old – plays a role in anti-corruption corruption for societies to achieve greater resilience and integrity at all levels.”

Oropouche East MP Dr Roodal Moonilal has accused the National Security Minister of compromising two independent institutions by making \"a politically partisan address\" at a recent function.
The Opposition MP charged that Fitzgerald Hinds delivered a \"flamingly biased and opinionated\" speech at a state event in which he sat between Prisons Commissioner Dennis Pulchan and DCP McDonald Jacob.
Moonilal called on Hinds to apologise to both leaders, adding if he failed to do so, it would confirm his intent to weaken the country’s law-enforcement organisations.
On Tuesday, at a press conference at the Police Administration Building in San Fernando, Hinds once again said his ministry fully supports the prison service in dealing with criminality in and out of the prisons.
He referred to the recent murders of prison officers Trevor Serrette, 48, and Nigel Jones, 38, both of whom worked at the Wayne Jackson Building at the Maximum Security Prison in Arouca.
Hinds said he considered the murders attacks on the State and warned that all arms of the protective services are on high alert.
Moonilal referred to Hinds's remarks as a gross example of impropriety and misconduct.
\"The Prisons and Police Services are critical institutions of law and order and must be respected as fiercely independent and politically impartial,\" he said in a release on Wednesday.
Moonilal considered Hinds’s remarks a \"political bleating\" saying they were the latest coarse example of the PNM Government undermining and destabilising crucial non-partisan agencies.
The Opposition MP threw jabs at the Government, saying it intends to undermine all such agencies.
Moonilal condemned Hinds for his \"pure politicking\" and \"blatant attempt to damage and demoralise the prison and police services\" on behalf, he said, of all patriotic citizens.
