A setback that did not prevent Pierre Lescure, the president of the festival, and Thierry Frémaux, the artistic director, from announcing the creation of the Cannes 2020 label to encourage the directors of 56 films.
In this official selection, only two films are directed by professionals from the African continent: the documentary En route Pour le Milliard du Congolais by Dieudo Hamadi and Souad, the feature film by Egyptian director Ayten Amin.
Included in this selection are two feature films by British director Steve McQueen, which shed light on issues faced by the black community in England.
Frémaux told the press: “He’s (Steve McQueen) coming with two films produced by the BBC “Lover’s Rock” and “Mangrove”, two historical films.
Films that as one of the members of the selection committee said we’re really going to increase the rate of diversity since it’s the black community in London in the 70’s…
\t“… and obviously “Mangrove” is a film of trials of police officers who harass the black community, obviously it resonates very dramatically with what happened to George Floyd and Adama Traoré.”

THE Zimbabwe Stock Exchange Limited (ZSE) has launched a new platform called ZSE Direct, specifically designed for the retail investor.ZSE Direct, according to ZSE chief executive officer Justin Bgoni, is an in house development aims at providing “retail investors with a smart way to manage their ZSE investments and view their CSD holdings remotely.” BY MTHANDAZO NYONI The platform will complement the platforms already available in the market with the aim to provide more choice for investors, he said in a statement yesterday. “The plans to launch ZSE Direct were prompted by a survey we commissioned in the first quarter of 2020, which indicated that participation by individual Zimbabweans on the local capital market was still marginal,” Bgoni said. He said some of the barriers cited included lack of appreciation of the investment process and the perception that investment is for the sophisticated. “ZSE Direct is meant to make accessing the market very simple for first time investors but yet allow them to experience the full investment process of having their own stockbroking account and their own CSD account,” he said. Only Zimbabweans with valid national identity cards and Zimbabwean bank accounts will be able to register on the platform in the initial phase, Bgoni said. The minimum initial investment to be made through ZSE Direct is $500. Bgoni said ZSE Direct will be accessible through the web portal and in due course a mobile application will also be launched. “The platform is connected to one of the commercial banks and allows investors to fund their wallets through Zipit or RTGS transfer. The platform is also connected to EcoCash and allows investors to fund their trading wallets directly from their EcoCash wallet,” he said. The ZSE boss said the platform is meant to make investment easy for retail investors. Some features to achieve that include user interface, your portfolio, market statistics, market depth, price range on buy and sell tabs and tutorials. “Going forward, the ZSE will continue to explore initiatives that promote financial literacy and deepen the Zimbabwean capital markets,” Bgoni said.

Prominent dissident Guillaume Soro, a former prime minister who was blocked from running in Ivory Coast’s presidential election, called Wednesday on the country’s military to disobey President Alassane Ouattara after he was allowed to win a controversial third term.
Soro’s comments via his Facebook account put him on a direct crash course with his former mentor, and align him more closely with two other opposition leaders still in Ivory Coast who have pledged to push ahead with a transitional government of their own after Saturday’s election.
“I ask you to disobey the illegal orders and join the National Council of Transition. To the defense and security forces, I ask you to look in the mirror, in soul and conscience, and act to stop the killings. You must act to restore our constitution to its former glory,” Soro said.
“Alassane Ouattara is no longer the President of the Republic of Ivory Coast. Put an end to the specter of civil war that threatens our country, you know me,” Soro said, directly addressing defense and security forces.
Soro, a former rebel leader who went on to become the president of the National Assembly, was unable to return to Ivory Coast from France earlier this year when criminal charges were brought against him that his supporters say were politically motivated to derail his candidacy.
He was later sentenced to 20 years in absentia on embezzling public funds and money laundering charges.
Several opposition leaders in Abidjan have had their homes surrounded by security forces since Tuesday when the electoral commission issued results showing Ouattara had won another term with 94.3% of the vote after an opposition boycott.
Ouattara has been in power for nearly a decade. He initially said he would not run again this year but changed his mind after his party’s candidate died suddenly in July. He maintains that the country’s two-term limit for presidents does not apply to him because of a constitutional referendum passed in 2016.
The 78-year-old president, who is popular with international donors, has said he was motivated to run again because of his love for his country. He also has said it’s unlikely he would seek reelection again in 2025.
There have been widespread fears of post-election violence erupting in Ivory Coast, where more than 3,000 people were killed following a disputed vote a decade ago.
Soro said Wednesday that a “nascent tyranny” was forming in the country and he called on opposition activists to continue civil disobedience efforts.
“We must stand up and block the former president, Alassane Ouattara, who has taken the country hostage,” Soro said. “Let’s stand up to say no to the dictatorship.”
