POWERGEN Penal’s under-19 team grabbed their second win in as many matches at the Sir Garfield Sobers International Schools Tournament in Bridgetown, Barbados when they got an exciting five-run victory over St Leonard’s Boys’ School on Friday.
PowerGen’s victory was built largely on the back of a stunning all-round performance from Levi Ghanny, who had a top score of 86, to go along with remarkable figures of five for 44 to help bowl his team to the tight win.
Batting first in the 40-over affair, PowerGen made a respectable score of 210 for nine, with Ghanny being the shining light in the batting effort. PowerGen slipped to 54 for three inside 12 overs, with opening batsmen Shaan Ramtahal (three) and Reyad Jerome (ten) both falling to Antoine Darlington (two for 28).
Ghanny, who struck four fours and two sixes in his 115-ball knock, started the repair job as he shared in a 62-run stand for the fourth wicket with Raoul Goolie (26), before putting on 79 for the sixth wicket with wicket-keeper Lucas Orosco, who struck 35 off 43 balls. PowerGen wobbled at the death as they lost four wickets in the last two overs, with Amar Sawh (two for 15) finishing as the pick of the bowlers for St Leonard’s.

In the chase, St Leonard’s were cruising at 89 for one in the 17th over, but a flurry of wickets saw them slipping to 143 for seven by the 31st over, with Ghanny accounting for five of those scalps. Already a star with the bat in hand, Ghanny put St Leonard’s in a terrible twist with his leg-spin.
First, he took the wickets of Kemar Dixon (29) and Kelani Clarke (duck) with consecutive balls in the 17th over, before dismissing the top-scorer Darlington (56), Ramon Maynard (15) and Maccaira Haynes (one).
When Haynes was dismissed, St Leonard’s needed 68 to get off the last 58 balls. Batting at number nine, Jaden Chase (41 off 28 balls) nearly steered the hosts home with a brave effort with two fours and two sixes in his cameo.
At the start of the last over, St Leonard’s were on 205 for nine – needing six runs off the last over to get the victory. However, PowerGen skipper Nikhel Ramtahal (one for 25) had the last word when Chase was dramatically caught off the first ball of the final over by Jerome to give the visiting team the win.
On Thursday, PowerGen began the tourney with a three-wicket win against Alleyne School in a low-scoring contest.
The 2024 Sir Garfield Sobers tournament has 18 teams, including teams from Australia, the US and hosts Barbados.
