Nationwide protests have taken place since October 7 despite the disbanding of the controversial Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) police unit.

The meteorological department has warned that heavy rains are likely to return in western parts of the country starting next month, leading to more cases of flooding and landslides.

Enhanced rains in the months of June, July and August, as well as attendant cooler than average temperatures could lead to an increase in cases of respiratory diseases like asthma, pneumonia, flu and common colds, said meteorological department director Stella Aura.

Similarly, vector-borne diseases such as malaria and others like cholera are likely to increase in the Lake Victoria Basin as well as parts of the Rift Valley due to the conducive temperatures that favour their spread.

Ms Aura said cases of flooding will still in happen in low lying areas across the country as well as landslides or mudslides in hilly areas of western and central and some parts of the Rift Valley.

\"The outlook for June-July-August rainfall season indicates that the Rift Valley highlands, Lake Basin Region and north western regions will receive enhanced rainfall,\" said Ms Aura.

The total cumulative number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Sierra Leone has now reached 1,001, as 32 new cases were reported yesterday.

Sierra Leone, as reported yesterday – Monday, the total cumulative number of  confirmed cases was 1,001, 49 deaths and 611 recoveries; with Liberia announcing a cumulative total of 370 cases and 30 deaths, with 195 recoveries.

The Gambia has the lowest total number of recorded cases in the group with 28 confirmed cases, only one dead, and 21 recoveries.

Although the number of new cases continue to rise by an average of just over a hundred a week in Sierra Leone, the rate of transmission remains low, sparking calls for the government to now rethink its national response strategy.

With the Sierra Leone economy shrinking much faster than during the Ebola pandemic, at over 60% so far, the government is being urged to suspend nationwide curfew and travel restrictions across districts which many say are crippling the country’s economy.

Sara Hegazy, 30, committed suicide on Sunday after leaving behind a note asking her family and friends to forgive her.

Hegazy rose to prominence after raising the LGBT rainbow flag at a concert in Egypt in October 2017.

Hegazy was among dozens arrested by Egyptian security forces following orders from the public prosecutor to investigate others who raised the rainbow flag at the same concert.

Activists paid tribute to Hegazy on social media, with some using the hashtag homosexuality is not specifically outlawed in Egypt, it is a conservative society and discrimination is rife.

Those arrested are subjected to anal examinations to determine whether they have had gay sex, which rights groups Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch say amount to torture.

Opposition MPs boycotted the swearing-in of the new MP stressing that the condition of Lissu was known to the National Assembly but speaker John Ndugai defended the decision at the time, saying the absentee Lissu had breached parliamentary procedures.

Lissu, an avowed Magufuli critic – arrested a number of times prior to the 2017 attack – said the last five years of the Magufuli government had plunged Tanzania into economic, political and diplomatic difficulties.

Chadema leader attacked – AP report

\tMin opposition leader was attacked by unidentified assailants as he entered his home late at night, officials with his party said Tuesday (June 9, 2020), just months ahead of a general election and as opposition figures face alleged harassment.

Freeman Mbowe, the leader of the opposition in parliament and chairman of the Chadema party, was rushed to a health center for treatment after he was attacked overnight in Dodoma, the administrative capital, Dodoma Regional Police Commander Gilles Murotto told reporters.

A climate of fear has grown in the East African nation, rights groups and critics say, as President John Magufuli seeks a second term in the October election that shows no sign of being delayed despite the coronavirus pandemic.

Cameroon’s University of Buea suspended a law instructor more than a month after he asked students a legal question during a political and constitutional history course.

English Law lecturer Felix Nkongho Agbor Balla posed level two law students the following: “The Anglophone crisis since 2016 was caused by the lawyers’ and teachers’ strike.

Manga summoned Agbor Balla on May 5 to appear before a university disciplinary council the following day to answer questions on the course, called “Political and Constitutional History of Cameroon,” and specifically the question he posed.

“The dismissal of Barrister Felix Agbor Balla as instructor at the Anglophone University of Buea seems to have all the hallmarks of the Anglophone-Francophone divide in Cameroon,” said John Menkefor, a commentator based in Bamenda, headquarters of Cameroon’s North West Region.

“Why did the higher education minister not raise similar concerns when francophone lecturers in law and political science departments in other Francophone universities set more challenging questions on the Anglophone problem?”

In Cameroon, a nonprofit group of doctors has started to make home visits, the first program of its kind in the country.

Medical experts say they understand this but urge patients to continue to stay in touch with doctors and hospitals.

The group SOS Doctors Cameroon includes 30 doctors in five cities.

Tanzania’s main opposition leader was attacked by unidentified assailants as he entered his home late at night, officials with his party said Tuesday, just months ahead of a general election and as opposition figures face alleged harassment.

Chadema secretary-general John Mnyika said the attack was reminiscent of one in 2017 when former opposition legislator Tundu Lissu was shot by unknown gunmen at his home in Dodoma.

Lissu has said he will challenge Magufuli for the presidency in October.

Mogadishu – The African Union (AU) said that three civilians were killed and two others injured during a firefight between its forces in Somalia and Islamists from the Al-Shabaab group.

The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) said its troops clashed with Al-Shabaab fighters who had laid a roadside ambush on Monday, northeast of Janale in Lower Shabelle, a hotbed for the insurgents.

AMISOM troops, which support Somalia's ill-equipped national army in the fight against Al-Shabaab, have been accused of killing civilians during past operations.

It was just the second time the US military admitted to civilian deaths from its drone programme in Somalia, though rights groups say the true figure is higher.

In 2011, AMISOM forces pushed Al-Shabaab out of their holdouts in Mogadishu, and the insurgents have since lost much of the territory they once controlled.

New York historian Walt Bachman introduces Northern Slave, Black Dakota, his new biography of Joseph Godfrey, an African American who was born into slavery in the free territory that became Minnesota, fled from abusive masters to seek refuge among the Dakota Indians, and was a principal figure in the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862.

My fascination with Joseph Godfrey arose from the investigation of a family story told to me by my grandfather when I was a teenager in Minneapolis in the 1950s.  One of our ancestors, Grandpa said, had been killed in the largest Indian uprising in the American West, the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862.  A stone monument marked the scene of his killing, he added, and an excellent museum in New Ulm, Minnesota, had original accounts documenting the story of his death.

Not until many years later, after I retired from a career as a Minnesota trial lawyer, did I make the trek to New Ulm to check out this family story.  There, a helpful librarian produced accounts relating to the killing of my ancestor in the small hamlet of Milford, six miles west of New Ulm, on August 18, 1862, the war’s first day.

The most helpful document was an emergency dispatch sent by the local sheriff to Minnesota’s Governor, Alexander Ramsey, late on the night of August 18. After describing the massacre of more than 50 men, women, and children at Milford, the sheriff ended his plea for reinforcements with these words: “It was, as I am informed, Wabashas band, a negro leading them, who committed the murders.”  Other accounts described a black man wearing a breechclout and daubed with war paint at the scene where my ancestor was killed.

Who, I immediately wondered, was this mysterious black man?  In a war that pitted aggrieved Dakota warriors against white settlers, why was he fighting on the Dakota side?  In a new state whose small African American population was centered in St. Paul, what was he doing on the newly settled western frontier?  Was he really the leader of the Dakota war party at Milford?  My obsession with

Since Magufuli was elected in 2015, Lissu has made it his job to fearlessly challenge the autocratic leader - and more than a dozen bullet wounds were not enough to shut him up.

Almost three years ago, Lissu, the former president of the Tanganyika Law Society (TLS), was en route to his home in Tanzania's capital Dodoma at around 11am for a lunch break during a parliamentary session.

The changes to Tanzanian society were \"immediate\" following Magufuli's election win almost five years ago, Lissu says.

According to Lissu, Magufuli, quite simply, needs the money to implement dozens of national megaprojects he has spearheaded, while Magufuli's fledgling attempts at revamping Air Tanzania, the country's flag carrier, have alone cost hundreds of millions of dollars.

What's unique under Magufuli, according to Lissu, is that the arrests are being made solely for criticising the president.

Dozens in Kenya’s capital Nairobi held peaceful demonstrations on Monday against police brutality. Marching through Mathare slums, the demonstrators demanded justice for the victims of extrajudicial killings.

According to Kenya’s Independent Policing Oversight Authority, at least 15 people have been killed by the police since authorities imposed a coronavirus curfew in late March.

Rebecca, a protester underlined the necessity of the march: “It’s important to stand in solidarity with victims of police brutality both locally and globally and it’s atrocious. We can’t have a peaceful, prosperous, existence with a police state, period.”

“We are sick and tired of the police brutality, we want justice for everyone, regardless whether in Kenya or all over the world, LGBT, any body, black lives matter. We just want justice, there’s no need of violence, nobody needs to be killed nobody needs to be beaten,” another protester, Beatrice, stressed.

Kenya’s police force is often accused by rights groups of using excessive force and carrying out unlawful killings, especially in poor neighbourhoods. Before the coronavirus pandemic, Human Rights Watch documented eight cases of police killings in less than two months.
