BY TATIRA ZWINOIRA FINANCIAL services giant, CBZ Holdings (CBZH) on Tuesday said inflation-adjusted post-tax profits slipped to $2,44 billion during the third quarter ended September 30, 2020 after the economy suffered from the effects of COVID-19-induced lockdowns. Zimbabwe’s biggest banking group posted $4,32 billion in post-tax profits during the comparable period in 2019. “The COVID-19 was declared a world pandemic by the World Health Organisation on March 11, 2020 as most countries reported surging numbers of cases. In response, the government adopted restrictive measures to contain the spread of the virus. While necessary, the restrictive measures also led to a disruption of economic activities creating both threats and opportunities to the group’s business model,” CBZH said in a commentary accompanying the period’s financial statements. Revenues declined to $10,4 billion from $11,5 billion previously in response to the total closure of economic activities as government tried to curb the spread of the pandemic. However, the group reported gains in total assets, which nearly doubled to $90,39 billion from $47,23 billion. In line with inflationary increases, lending increased by 262,17% to $22,74 billion compared to $6,27 billion previously. Total deposits more than doubled during the period under review to $64,38 billion from $27,83 billion in 2019. The group said COVID-19 might turn into an endemic disease in the coming year, which might dictate the pace and growth of the economy. “Going into the last quarter of the year, and into 2021, a number of scenarios are shaping up for the global and domestic economies,” the group said. “On the global level, COVID-19 is likely to gradually gravitate towards endemic status, with localised restrictions. Policymakers are expected to maintain expansionary monetary policies in order to continue supporting their economies. In Zimbabwe, the direction of most economic fundamentals largely depends on the government’s pace and approach towards reopening of the economy, in particular how the authorities will seek to boost economic activity in the key growth sectors such as the agriculture, mining, manufacturing and public sector,” CBZH noted. The banking group said policy conduct remained generally difficult and constrained as the continued lack of balance of payments and budgetary support confined authorities to limited domestic resources.
THE Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) says it is now seeking to drum up funding to assist countries in the Americas with central warehouses and cold storage units for COVID-19 vaccines.PAHO Assistant Director Dr Jarbas Barbosa said yesterday that no country within or outside the region is ready to deal with the storage conditions for these vaccines, as there are no other vaccines with the same characteristics as those for COVID-19.

By MIKE STOBBE AP Medical Writer NEW YORK (AP) — The U.S. hit a record number of coronavirus hospitalizations Tuesday and surpassed 1 million new confirmed cases in just the first 10 days of November amid a nationwide surge of infections that shows no signs of slowing. The new wave appears bigger and more widespread than the surges that happened in the spring and summer — and threatens to be worse. But experts say there are also reasons to think the nation is better able to deal with the virus this time around. 'We're definitely in a better place' when […]

BY WINSTONE ANTONIO WHILE the death of Genius “Ginimbi” Kadungure (36) has continued to set tongues wagging on different social media platforms with many conspiracy theories, Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation deputy minister Tino Machakaire’s name was yesterday thrown into the ring amid claims that he had pledged to buy a coffin for the deceased. The socialite and businessman died when his Rolls-Royce Wraith II vehicle collided head-on with a Honda Fit along Borrowdale Road, Harare on Sunday morning while driving back to his Domboshava home. Ginimbi was in the company of Limumba Karim, believed to be from Malawi, socialite Mitchel “Moana” Amuli and Alichia Adams believed to be from Mozambique who all perished in the accident. They were all coming from Moana’s 26th birthday party at Ginimbi’s Club Dreams, formerly Sankayi in Harare’s avenues area. In an interview with NewsDay Life & Style, Machakaire denied the alleged coffin pledge. Ginimbi’s friends also dismissed reports that there was a coffin in the late’s mansion. “There are some people who are just good at spreading malice. I did not pledge to buy a coffin for Ginimbi, but instead I will be doing that for Gringo in partnership with Nyaradzo founder Phillip Mataranyika,” Machakaire said. Ginimbi’s friends’ spokesperson Chief Albert Ndabambi said the rumour that was being peddled on different social media platforms that there was a coffin and a snake vomiting cash in the house was evil. “It is sad that there are some people who do not appreciate hard work. Ginimbi was a hard worker and the on-going narrative to disrespect his hustles is sad especially to many youngsters who looked up to him as a role model and a source of inspiration,” he said. “People forget that Ginimbi did not just wake up with all the property he had, no he worked hard to amass it. If people can get time to talk to Tazvi Mhaka, Dino Tumbare, Brian Nyanyiwa and Chief Jose they will really come to understand how Ginimbi struggled to be where he was with his life.” Chief Albert said there was overwhelming evidence that Ginimbi worked for his lavish lifestyle. “Ginimbi started from scratch as he worked hard to create inroads for indigenous gas company and when others closed, he continued with the trade. He could go down and rise again, we can even prove that with the bank accounts and invoices,” he said. Meanwhile, Ginimbi’s homestead will this Friday reverberate with sounds of different music genres as several artistes are set to perform at the farewell concert as his body lies in state at the mansion. Ginimbi’s brother and family spokesperson Darlington Kadungure, told this paper that his late brother would be buried on Saturday at his mansion which is set to be turned into a hotel according to his wish. He said as per tradition, Ginimbi’s body would lie in state at his Domboshava mansion on Friday ahead of burial on Saturday, adding that mourners would be gathering at his father’s house to allow undertakers to prepare the grave. Last night, Ginimbi’s friends donated some foodstuffs and other i

Since the launch, cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology has expanded. They are expected to grow more in the near future. With time many improvements have been made and together they are making cryptocurrency more lucrative. The year 2020 was a rollercoaster ride for the world. It made the world stagnant for some time and that caused the unemployment of millions of people globally. Governments were left with a public crisis during this pandemic. The public crises emerging from the COVID-19 is no more a problem because cryptocurrency and blockchain technology aided in solving them. The technology that was launched in 2009 has now grown up into a more advanced form. This article will tell you how? Acceptance of cryptocurrency in 2020 will likely nurture the governments and financial institutions to look upon digital money as a way to distribute aid. Those times were a critical phase for everyone so the government had to take steps to help people. The government made use of these virtual currencies in helping people with their daily expenses. Everything was ordered online because of the lockdown. So the bills were paid online as well. People could easily pay those bills with the bitcoin aid they got from the government. The outlook for 2020. By taking the help of these latest innovations people became aware of these. The awareness created further implementations in the post coronavirus world. Here is how. Tracking system. Blockchain is a brilliant technology that has been used in tracking records of various corona patients. In Asia however, the records for the financial aids were saved on this master ledger helping the government in distributing properly. Many insurance companies in the future have decided to use this technology in order to keep track of financial claims. In the future, the governments of different countries will use this leverage blockchain system to track other data as well. In the coming year, there will be a globally distributed ledger database for all the coronavirus patients that will help in all research purposes. It will promote data accuracy and transparency between all countries to conclude better results. Increase in financial services by the institutes. So while an emphasis on prevention is important, it is also necessary to discuss how to deal in the event of a positive diagnosis.

THERE is much debate about the 2020 US elections. However, there are neither cogent arguments nor consistent scientific analysis that explain what is going on. This article seeks to cut through the noise and bring rationality and reason to the discourse. GUEST COLUMNIST: AUTHOR. G. O. MUTAMBARA A new electoral system In their national efforts to mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the November 2020 electoral process, the United States, through its various States, introduced a new electoral system with the following provisions: Postal ballot voting for anyone who wants to use it; Early in-person voting for anyone who wants to do so; Election day, in-person voting. This contrasts with the old system: Election day, in-person voting (as the primary electoral method); Postal ballot voting for a few who apply and justify; Early in-person voting; only for a few exceptional cases. Although the new electoral system was put in place to mitigate COVID-19, it presents different and better voting opportunities to citizens than the old system. It is not equivalent to the old system. Why do we say this? The new system makes it easier and less onerous for a citizen to cast a vote. The new system leads to a higher turnout for every candidate who embraces it. For purposes of illustration, if a candidate has 100 supporters, under the old system, we can assume 60 will vote, whereas under the new system the number will increase say to 80. There are various reasons why supporters do not cast their votes. Under the new system, those reasons are reduced, hence the increased turnout. Another impact of the new electoral system was to remove voting logistical constraints experienced in some constituencies such as few polling stations, prohibitive documentation requirements, and other voter suppression shenanigans. The new system radically enabled the voter. Trump’s strategic error Donald Trump did not embrace the new system, while Joe Biden did. Trump's wrong assumption was that all his supporters would show up on election day, November 3, 2020. He did not understand that the new system has the potential to affect the turnout for every candidate. Biden and the Democrats whole-heartedly embraced the new system and mobilised their supporters to take advantage of postal votes and early in-person voting. In some cases, Trump did the opposite by casting aspersion about the new system, thus discouraging his supporters from utilising postal voting and early in-person voting. This was disastrous. Trump practised voter suppression against himself. If he did not like the new system, he had two options: Launch legal challenges at the state level to stop the new system in all the states, way before the election date. Of course, this was not going to succeed because the states have the power to run elections in the United States. The Federal Government has no role. Having failed to stop the new system, Trump should have embraced it and encouraged his supporters to utilise it maximally. He did not exercise either of these two opti
Rescue teams out in force on Wednesday in the Mediterranean as they tried to save some 88 people, including children and babies, who have been shipwrecked on a flimsy boat that gave way.
The Open arms vessel said it recovered five bodies and that the rickety boat collapsed and tipped them into the sea.
The Spanish NGO managed to distribute waistcoats and masks in the moments before the ground sank.
It is the second migrant boat that the organisation's vessel has rescued in less than 24 hours.
Several miles away it was a similar situation but on a different boat. Some 13 people drowned off the Libyan coast while it managed to save 85 who were adrift and in danger of sinking in international waters.
Their boat was badly damaged, with water and gasoline spilled inside.
The NGO has criticised the fact that the countries of the Mediterranean have abandoned these people and have not moved government relief teams.
Since the start of the year, more than 575 migrants have died while trying to reach Europe, according to the UN's Migration body the IOM.
The rescue ship set sail from the port of Barcelona (northeast Spain) on November 4 bound for the central Mediterranean, where in recent days it was waiting to receive a request for help.
There appears to be consistent evidence that exposures to natural environments have a positive effect on pain, stress, anxiety, blood pressure and heart rate.
Texas on Wednesday became the first state with more than 1 million confirmed COVID-19 cases, and California closed in on that mark as a surge of infections engulfs the country from coast to coast. In New York, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said all restaurants, bars and gyms statewide will have to close at 10 p.m. starting […]

For example, in private internal meetings in the early days of the virus, top scientists described some countries' approaches as 'an unfortunate laboratory to study the virus' and a […]
