Critics have called it a stunt to invite sympathy. Yet Amuriat says campaigning without shoes is a protest and that those who do not get its symbolism are missing a point.

Uganda is due to hold a general election on January 14. Amuriat and another opposition candidate, Bobi Wine have had their rallies violently dispersed by security forces or been arrested.

In mid-November, scores of people were killed as security forces attempted to quell protests against the arrest and detention of Bobi Wine.

Police has accused the candidates of addressing huge gatherings in contravention of regulations on COVID-19 prevention.

Swollen feet

In an interview with one of the dailies in Uganda, Amuriat said his feet hurt a lot and has to pour cold water on them in between campaign stops for some relief.

Doctors have cautioned him on the potential danger of contracting tetanus from cuts to his feet.

Yet Amuriat remains adamant. He says by refusing to wear shoes, he’s standing in solidarity with people whose wealth and opportunities have been stolen by the country’s longtime ruler Yoweri Museveni.

Museveni, in power since 1986 is seeking a new term. In 2017, he changed the constitution to remove age limits that would have stopped him from seeking re-election.

FDC is Uganda’s largest opposition party. In 3 previous elections, the party fronted veteran activist and retired army colonel Kizza Besigye for president.

Chemical agents – including tear gas, pepper balls, and other lachrymators – have been fired at peaceful protesters in cities including Austin, Minneapolis, New Orleans, Richmond, Sacramento, San Diego, Seattle, and even Beverly Hills.

The most high-profile of these incidents involved the U.S. Park Police using chemical agents to disperse protesters in Washington, D.C. so that President Trump could walk across Lafayette Square to St. John’s Episcopal Church for a photo op.

NPR highlighted both a 2014 study by the US Army concluded that soldiers exposed to tear gas were more likely to contract respiratory illnesses, as well as a letter signed by over a thousand public health professionals that “Oppose[s] any use of tear gas, smoke, or other respiratory irritants” during the protests.

This goes against the value of innocence that John Adams and others placed at the foundation of our criminal justice system.

This common-sense proposal would set a federal standard regarding the use of chemical agents, holding all police departments accountable for indiscriminate use against American citizens.

Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, the only NYC mayoral candidate with law enforcement experience has some suggestions on how the city should reform the NYPD — and is calling for budget cuts.

In a recently written report, Adams recommends the city drastically convert some NYPD units to an 80% civilian workforce, reduce overtime, and conduct forensic audits of the department’s budget.

“Diverting wasteful spending from the third-largest agency operating budget in our city is essential to combating our deficit, and ensuring that budgetary waste is redirected toward Black and Brown to Adams’ team, these efforts would result in reducing the budget by $1 billion or more.

His plan comes amid calls for significant budget cuts to the NYPD as the city is facing a $10 billion budget shortfall.

Adams’ other recommendations for the City budget include cutting fat through having more city employees work from home, eliminating patronage jobs at City Hall, the City Council and the borough presidents’ offices, as well as temporarily furloughing city workers who could apply for unemployment benefits that would “make them whole.”

—   Called “The School That Wouldn’t Die” by Reader’s Digest in January 1994, Providence St. Mel School Founder Paul Adams III led a historic national campaign in 1978 to save the historic inner-city institution.

As the West Side suffers from the highest infection rates in the city and the country, Providence St. Mel School has once again rallied a community in crisis.

Adams preached the importance of PSM students doing three things: Go to college, return to their roots, and send their kids to Providence St. Mel School.

That resonated with this year’s commencement speaker Adwoa Antwi-Barfi, a Providence St. Mel Class of 2000 graduate.

Providence St. Mel has produced a number of distinguished alumni who have returned or gave back to their roots, including John W. Fountain, PSM, Class of 1978.
