Critics have called it a stunt to invite sympathy. Yet Amuriat says campaigning without shoes is a protest and that those who do not get its symbolism are missing a point.

Uganda is due to hold a general election on January 14. Amuriat and another opposition candidate, Bobi Wine have had their rallies violently dispersed by security forces or been arrested.

In mid-November, scores of people were killed as security forces attempted to quell protests against the arrest and detention of Bobi Wine.

Police has accused the candidates of addressing huge gatherings in contravention of regulations on COVID-19 prevention.

Swollen feet

In an interview with one of the dailies in Uganda, Amuriat said his feet hurt a lot and has to pour cold water on them in between campaign stops for some relief.

Doctors have cautioned him on the potential danger of contracting tetanus from cuts to his feet.

Yet Amuriat remains adamant. He says by refusing to wear shoes, he’s standing in solidarity with people whose wealth and opportunities have been stolen by the country’s longtime ruler Yoweri Museveni.

Museveni, in power since 1986 is seeking a new term. In 2017, he changed the constitution to remove age limits that would have stopped him from seeking re-election.

FDC is Uganda’s largest opposition party. In 3 previous elections, the party fronted veteran activist and retired army colonel Kizza Besigye for president.

Marseille took a historic step in the music industry on Thursday after the news that the French Ligue 1 club had launched a rap label alongside music industry giant BMG.

In a statement, BMG said OM Records was “a new label for hip-hop, rap and R&B” and was to be based in the city in the south of France, which has long been a major hub. hip-hop country.

To celebrate the new label, a jet black double-decker bus with some of the city’s local rap stars and DJs played music in France’s second-largest city.

“It’s good that the club is doing that,” said rapper Hollis the Infame, a lifelong Marseille fan who wears the team’s white jersey in his videos.

“I think I was a fan of Marseille even before I was born, it’s in our genes. ”

Emilie Hauck, head of A&R, told AFP that OM Records is a “50-50 joint venture” between the club and BMG and “the first time that a major in the record industry and a club like OM came together to create a label ”.

Marseille President Jacques-Henri Eyraud declared: “Marseille has been a cradle of French rap and hip-hop since the IAM collective and the links between OM and local artists have been strong for years”.

IAM has been one of the most important French rap groups since the late 1980s and has long collaborated with the iconic American group Wu-Tang Clan.

“The launch of OM Records strengthens this bond and symbolizes the club’s desire to promote the unique energy that emanates from Marseille and its inhabitants all over the world,” added Eyraud.

The new label will provide opportunities for artists and groups from “Marseille, southern France and Africa,” said Sylvain Gazaignes, BMG Managing Director for France.

The first album to be released on OM Records will be a compilation titled “Friday 13th” and will be produced by the four people behind the B18 label created in the tough neighborhoods of northern Marseille a year ago.

Many will remember Nkurunziza only for the last years of his presidency - that legally dubious third term of office that sparked a political crisis.

Nkurunziza's record shouldn't be reduced to those years of the ruling CNDD-FDD's repression of its opponents, although this brought Burundi closer to the governance style of other countries in the region.

The brutal assassination of Melchior Ndadaye, Burundi's first Hutu president, by a Tutsi-dominated army, encouraged Nkurunziza to enrol in an armed movement.

Selected CNDD-FDD candidate by default in the 2005 election, Nkurunziza came to power following the Arusha and Pretoria peace accords, and not through a military victory like his Ugandan and Rwandan counterparts.

An important indicator of this trend is the various electoral processes, all of which were marked by violence and, with the exception of 2005, record shouldn't be reduced to his last term that saw the repression of political opponents

Nkurunziza and the CNDD-FDD have never been able to guarantee that the end of privileges granted to the Tutsi minority in the Arusha Agreement would lead to real democracy as opposed to a revengeful tyranny of the Hutu majority.

Valadao endorsed President Donald Trump after withholding his backing in 2016 — a risk in a swing district the president lost by 15 points four years ago. To fill the gap, our study examined the gendered implications of sporadic water supply for livelihoods in Tatale-Sanguli District.

We discovered that water shortages affected both men and women in the district, but weighed more on women than men.

A combination of reproductive and productive workload makes women more susceptible to the drudgery of sporadic water supply than men.

When water supply for agriculture is limited, some younger women and men move away temporarily to find different ways of earning a living, leaving older family members behind.

How to relieve women's burden

To relieve the people of the Tatale-Sanguli District from the drudgery of limited water supply, we recommend that the local government and non-governmental organisations should intensify their water provision efforts in the district.
