BY SILAS NKALA FORMER Botswana President Festus Mogae and Choppies managing director Ottapathu Ramachandran have been sucked into the legal battle between former Vice-President Phelekezela Mphoko and retail group, Choppies Enterprises. Mogae and Ramachandran are expected to explain their role in allegedly helping Choppies bypass provisions of Zimbabwe’s Indigenisation Act. The developments came after Mphoko and his son, Siqokoqela, recently sued Nanavac Investments in Bulawayo, Choppies Enterprises and Choppies Distribution Centre (Proprietary) Limited both in Gaborone, Botswana, demanding payment of their 51% shares which they held before they were “unlawfully” divested of their entire shareholding by the company. Latest revelations are that, in a letter addressed to Mphoko when the fallout started, Mogae who is former Choppies chairperson, had informed the Mphokos that they entered into partnership “with a clear understanding of the shareholding of 93% shares to Choppies Enterprise and 7% to the Mphoko family, free of charge”. The Mphoko family has since denied the 7% shares prescribed to them by Mogae indicating that they were the majority shareholders in terms of Zimbabwean laws. In their application filed at the Bulawayo High Court, the Mphokos claimed that at all material times, they were majority shareholders in Choppies, holding an aggregate of 51% shares therein. Mphoko and his son reportedly owned 25,5% each in a joint venture trading as Nanavac Investments, while Choppies Enterprises held the remaining 49%. Through their lawyer Zibusiso Ncube, the Mphokos said in or about 2018, a dispute arose between Siqokoqela and Choppies, which resulted in Choppies instituting legal proceedings against the former Vice-President’s son, his wife and Choppies in the High Court. Siqokoqela and his wife were immediately arrested for fraud. In order to secure their freedom, Siqokoqela on January 9, 2019 signed a deed of settlement with Choppies Enterprises in terms of which the Mphokos disposed of their shareholding to the company. The lawyers said as per the deed of settlement, the Mphokos were to be paid US$2 900 000 by Choppies for the acquisition of the Mphokos full rights and title to the first defendant’s shareholding. The lawyers said that deed of settlement was void because the Mphokos signed it under duress after the arrest and detention of Siqokoqela and his wife on malicious and false charges. The Mphokos are seeking an order declaring as unlawful the deed of settlement in terms of which they were divested of their entire shareholding in Choppies. They are also claiming US$22 585 714, representing the value of the 51% shareholding which they claim control in the retail group.

Warriors stars Knowledge Musona, Ovidy Karuru and man-of-the-moment Tino Kadewere believe they have enough arsenal to come from tonight’s match with another positive result. “Mentally, we are ready for the game,” said Kadewere, who made headlines at the weekend in France when he scored a brace for his Ligue 1 side Lyon. “We feel ready because we have been playing games for our team and we are just looking forward to this game tomorrow. Algeria have been playing well recently, but anything can happen. We are hoping that we can get a better result than the last one we got against them. But it doesn’t come easy, we have to work hard for it and show what we can do on the pitch,” Kadewere said. “I came here to help my country and I’m really proud to represent Zimbabwe. I will make sure I do my best and put to use the things that I have learnt since I signed for Lyon and try to help my teammates. Econet has partnered with Alphabet, Google’s parent company to provide new high speed broadband technology which uses beams instead of fibre, Alphabet’s subsidiary, X “Moonshot Factory” said on Tuesday. BY PRIMROSE HAISA “Our ‘Project Taara’ high-speed optical wireless broadband endeavour is working with internet provider Econet and its subsidiaries to begin rolling out its tech across Sub-Saharan Africa,” X said in a statement. “This deployment follows a series of small pilots in Kenya specifically, but now Taara and Econet are ready to start adding high-speed wireless optical links to supplement and enhance Econet service reach more broadly, starting with Liquid Telecom customers in Kenya.” X added: “Taara is yet another approach to extending the reach of broadband networks to parts of the Earth that have typically not had access or high-speed connections, due primarily to infrastructure challenges.” According to X, in a substitute of digging about two weeks to lay fibre cables, the new technology will be organized to connect two points 20 km apart and it currently delivers up to 10 Gbits of internet capacity. X’s Taara is essentially a fibre optic network cable without the cable which uses a narrow, invisible beam of light to transmit data between two terminals that can span up to nearly 12.5 miles, while providing transfer speeds of up to 20 Gbps. This, X said, means thousands of customers or households can be connected while still providing speeds high enough for streaming high-quality video. “Taara’s technology can essentially be used to patch gaps in traditional fibre optic networks, spanning rivers or crossing terrain that would be hard or impossible to span using either under or aboveground cable.” X has been piloting Taara in a number of deployments around the world and is moving towards commercialising the project.

BY HENRY MHARA ALGERIA superstar Riyad Mahrez will be the top priority for the Warriors defenders when the two teams clash in back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The first game is in Algiers tomorrow before a return leg at the National Sports Stadium on Monday next week. The Warriors squad was expected to make the trip to Algiers last night aboard a chartered flight. For Zimbabwe to get a positive result in the two matches, much will depend on how the defenders will deal with the threat of Manchester City winger Mahrez. The man who could be assigned to stop the slippery winger is Jordan Zemura, the Bournemouth fullback who will be making his first appearance for the Warriors. The task looks daunting especially if it has to be executed by a 20-year-old, but the England-born defender says he is ready for the job. “Playing against players of that quality you have to give respect and they can respect you also,” Zemura said. “As good as he is you don't have to rush into challenges, you don’t want to think you are going to win the ball all the time. Sometimes you are not going to win it. You might lose it but how you recover and how you anticipate the next move is crucial and being confident on the ball is a must. Because if you can relax and get composed you earn respect in that aspect. If the coach plays me in that position then I will be ready for him than the last time and I will be ready forever.” Zemura has faced the Algerian before when Manchester City played Bournemouth in a Carabao Cup match in September this year. He was thrown into the fray after 27 minutes following the injury to Kelly Lloyd and did well in a 2-1 defeat. “When I played against Man City, one of the biggest teams in England, it was a good challenge. I was playing against Mahrez and Kyle Walker on my side so it was a tough battle but I think I fared well. I had a good game, defensively I did everything I could do,” Zemura said. The fullback limped off at a training session at the National Sports Stadium with a foot injury, and when he was asked how serious the problem was, he responded, “It’s nothing to worry about. Personally I’m strong mentally and physically so it’s just something with my foot, a bit of bruising so I’m just taking it easy. There are still two days before the game so I think I will recover well. I cannot be coming off or miss such a match because of an injury like that.” While Mahrez would obviously be the main threat, Zemura warned his teammates to be wary of the other Algerians. “Algeria are currently African champions so they are a good team. They haven’t lost in 20 matches so it’s a big challenge but for us it’s the only way you can gauge yourself. If you play against the best, then you know how good you are as a player. Multiple people were wounded Wednesday when an explosive device hit an international ceremony commemorating the end of World War I.
The event was being held at a cemetery in the Saudi city of Jeddah, according to French government officials.
Several countries had representatives at the ceremony, held at a cemetery for dead non-Muslims, the officials from the French Foreign Ministry said.
The identities of the victims were unclear.
Saudi state television broadcast from outside the cemetery and acknowledged that an attack involving an explosive device took place.
However it stressed that things were under control and the security situation was now \"stable.\"
The report said an official statement about the cause and casualty details was upcoming.
The stabbing was carried out by a Saudi man, who was arrested. His motives remain unclear.

To support Abiy's force on the Amhara side, he (Isayas Afwerki) began action backed with heavy weaponry from behind us as we were fighting in front of us. Therefore the war has now progressed to a different stage.\" Gebremichael claimed.
Eritrea’s foreign minister Osman Saleh Mohammed has denied the accusation.
The TPLF was part of Ethiopia’s minoritarian ruling coalition until Abiy’s appointment in 2018. Tensions between the TPLF and Abiy’s administration have escalated in recent months.
Abiy, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019, ordered air strikes and sent troops into Tigray last week after accusing the TPLF of attacking a military base.

RECENTLY, we reported that the economic crisis in the country had forced the Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI) to retrench staff. This obviously points to a far bigger crisis. Industrial bodies derive their survival from subscriptions paid by companies. When companies are ailing, one of the first things they do is to withdraw their membership from business lobby organisation like the CZI, or stop paying subscriptions. This should be the case with the CZI now, as well as its peers, the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce, which has suggested that government takes over some of these organisations’ bills. We believe government should inject the $18 billion COVID-19 package promised in May to bail out industry urgently to avoid bloodbath and further haemorrhaging of the economy. This is an urgent matter as we have noted an extremely worrying trend recently, which points to a silent carnage that is blowing through companies. First it was the closure of household goods production firm, United Refineries Limited last week. Then in the past week a string of third quarter financial statements have showed that industries are operating in a far more difficult climate than we thought. Volumes and revenues are coming off at a frightening pace. At Truworths, revenues declined to $165,3 million during the period, from $177,8 million in 2019 due to plummeting demand and a blazing liquidity crisis. Unifreight posted an inflation adjusted profit before tax of $19 million but the volatility of the reporting currency forced transported tonnages to fall by 22%. The Livestock and Meat Advisory Council said deboned meat imports fell by 73%, which points to another bloodbath in that sector. The cigarette maker, British American Tobacco said volumes fell by 8%. One of the most accurate measures of a company’s success in a hyperinflationary period is its volumes. If these are declining everyone must be worried. This is why we urge authorities to put on their thinking caps and come up with strategies that will save industries. The most basic steps to take are increasing spending power and stabilising inflation and prices. Without this, the end game may be bloody.

The socialite and businessman died when his Rolls-Royce Wraith II vehicle collided head-on with a Honda Fit along Borrowdale Road, Harare on Sunday morning while driving back to his Domboshava home. Ginimbi was in the company of Limumba Karim, believed to be from Malawi, socialite Mitchel “Moana” Amuli and Alichia Adams believed to be from Mozambique who all perished in the accident. They were all coming from Moana’s 26th birthday party at Ginimbi’s Club Dreams, formerly Sankayi in Harare’s avenues area. In an interview with NewsDay Life & Style, Machakaire denied the alleged coffin pledge. Ginimbi’s friends also dismissed reports that there was a coffin in the late’s mansion. “There are some people who are just good at spreading malice. I did not pledge to buy a coffin for Ginimbi, but instead I will be doing that for Gringo in partnership with Nyaradzo founder Phillip Mataranyika,” Machakaire said. Ginimbi’s friends’ spokesperson Chief Albert Ndabambi said the rumour that was being peddled on different social media platforms that there was a coffin and a snake vomiting cash in the house was evil. “It is sad that there are some people who do not appreciate hard work. Ginimbi was a hard worker and the on-going narrative to disrespect his hustles is sad especially to many youngsters who looked up to him as a role model and a source of inspiration,” he said. “People forget that Ginimbi did not just wake up with all the property he had, no he worked hard to amass it. If people can get time to talk to Tazvi Mhaka, Dino Tumbare, Brian Nyanyiwa and Chief Jose they will really come to understand how Ginimbi struggled to be where he was with his life.” Chief Albert said there was overwhelming evidence that Ginimbi worked for his lavish lifestyle. “Ginimbi started from scratch as he worked hard to create inroads for indigenous gas company and when others closed, he continued with the trade.
