ANC members have blocked roads in Naledi, Soweto, apparently in a bid to prevent voters from partiipating in local by-elections
\t On Friday, internet and international calls were cut off across the West African nation in anticipation of the election results, according to locals and international observers in the capital, Conakry.
\t This was the third time that Conde matched-up against Diallo. Before the election, observers raised concerns that an electoral dispute could reignite ethnic tensions between Guinea's largest ethnic groups.

Don’t Let High Turnout Distract You From the Reality of Voter Suppression
Kentucky and Georgia are having historic turnouts, but that doesn’t mean voters aren’t facing major obstacles
Voters cast fill out their ballot during Tuesdays Kentucky primary on June 23, 2020 in Louisville, Kentucky.
Photo: Brett Carlsen/Getty ImagesKentucky and Georgia’s historic voter turnouts for primary elections are a tremendous victory, one that speaks to the backbreaking work of thousands of volunteers, organizers, and candidates (many of them Black, Indigenous, and of color) who drove out the vote in their districts.
Though there appeared to be few issues during Election Day, poll workers temporarily locked out several Jefferson County voters who were unable to reach the polling place by 6 p.m. due to traffic leading to the Expo Center.
And now Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger is refusing to mail absentee ballot applications to voters for the August runoff and November general election.
And though it may be true that Kentucky and Georgia broke records in their primary voter turnout, it is also true that these states, and many others, can do far better in November.
During the 2018 midterms, 53% of voters were women. Yet for some, a distrust of the system and other barriers keep them from the polls.
NBA star LeBron James has continually used his platform to spread awareness about issues impacting the Black community.
The nonprofit—dubbed More Than a Vote—was launched to encourage the Black community to register to vote and to spread awareness about voter suppression tactics being used throughout the country.
The collective of athletes and entertainment stars who are a part of the effort include NBA players Trae Young, Draymond Green, Udonis Haslem and Derrick Rose, retired NBA player Jalen Rose, WNBA star Skylar Diggins-Smith, NFL player Alvin Kamara, comedian Kevin Hart and others.
More Than a Vote will work in concert with other nonprofit organizations focused on voting rights to drive impact.

This weekend marks the first round of elections for 568 seats in the lower house of parliament.
All Guyana deserve a credible outcome not by Mr. Jagdeo’s sudden love and respect for GECOM Chair Justice Claudette Singh but consistent with the Order.
The Chair is on record, from the day she took the Oath of Office, to deliver to this nation credible elections consistent with the Election laws, Constitution of Guyana and Judiciary.
That on Nomination Day she told this nation that “I am confident that the GECOM will be able to deliver free and fair elections the only one way I know and that is the correct way,” she must be allowed to do so.
In true divisive fashion he now wants it to be believed he cares about the integrity of GECOM on the misguided pretext that “The last few months have been a difficult period where the Chair has had to contend with key elements within the Secretariat and the three APNU+AFC Commissioners, who are bent on undermining every effort aimed at producing a credible result which reflects the will of the electorate.”
If the GS really wants to demonstrate respect for Justice Singh let him tell his supporters to await the full execution of the Order and results from GECOM.

“With adequate budgetary facilitation, the commission is ready to deliver on its constitutional mandates, among them conducting elections and referendums,” Mr Chebukati said.
“We want to see the final BBI report, but there is still debate on whether to go with this IEBC to the referendum and do away with it afterwards or change it before the vote,” he said.
Some proponents of the BBI drive also differed with the proposal by MP Jeremiah Kioni that the referendum be held alongside the 2022 election.
Mr Kioni is the chairman of the Parliamentary Constitutional Implementation Oversight Committee and has published the Referendum Bill, 2020.
“If, for example, the proportional representation as per the proposed BBI report is to be implemented, or restructuring of the executive, or having ministers elected from Parliament, then we cannot go to a referendum and at the same time hold elections, unless someone is saying that the new changes will take effect in 2027 after the next elections,” he said.
The IEC is conducting by-elections in 95 wards across the country on Wednesday.

Members of the public interested in commenting on the proposed charter amendment establishing a new Department of Community Safety and Violence Prevention and removing the Police Department as a charter department can submit comments online.
The City Council voted June 26 to advance the proposal as a ballot measure to be considered by Minneapolis voters.
Under state law, the Charter Commission has at least 60 days to complete its review and submit its recommendation to the City Council.
The city charter is the constitution of the City of Minneapolis.

[Monitor] Members of Parliament (MPs) sitting on the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee yesterday rejected the Electoral Commission's (EC) decision banning open public rallies ahead of the 2021 General Elections.
That issue was and is police brutality.
And while I know that Whites, both male and female, are all too often victimized by unprofessional or brutal police acts, the most egregious instances of police misconduct are those faced by Black Americans and, specifically, African American men.
The paradigm and historical analogy that is closest to this problem of police use of illegal or excessive force, including deadly force, would be to recall the days when Black Americans were killed extra-legally by lynchings.
The major Senate and midterm elections should teach all Americans, especially Democrats, one thing about the nature of the 21st century American electorate: Democrats do not win without Black voter turnout.
Perhaps, the silence of the Democratic candidates on the issue of police brutality will be the same silence America will also hear on Election Day, 2020.
Community transmissions are a growing concern in the country which has recorded just over 1 600 cases.
Three top Somalia leaders--Prime Minister Hassan Ali Kheyre, Somalia's ambassador to the UN Abubakar Dahir Osman and the Speaker of the Senate, Abdi Hashi Abdullahi--have promised that the country will hold its first universal suffrage elections since 1969, despite current challenges suggesting the contrary.
Parliament was set to meet on June 6 to review the election timetable.
The seventh session of parliament was scheduled to open in April, to hear the report of the National Independent Electoral Commission on the mode of election.
Mr Osman, on May 30 while addressing a UN Security Council in a discussion of the African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom), said the country is determined to conduct a one-man one-vote election.
Mr Abdullahi said that both the presidential and parliamentary elections will be held on time despite the country facing several challenges.
Former President Barack Obama released a statement on Monday, June 1 encouraging protesters of the George Floyd murder to further their activism once they leave the streets.
Released via online publishing platform Medium, Obama touched on the ways that activists can create real change in their communities when the protesting ends.
“… the elected officials who matter most in reforming police departments and the criminal justice system work at the state and local levels,” he explained.
Obama went on to say that activists need to get specific about their demands for criminal justice and police reform, as well as find the best ways to educate their community members about what needs to be done.
Obama ended his public posting on Monday by sharing a video of George Floyd’s brother, Terrence Floyd, encouraging protesters to be nonviolent and vote.
With both the local government and general elections on the horizon, there are mounting calls for the Government and the Opposition to give urgent consensus to holding both polls simultaneously in light of a number of prevailing conditions being faced by the country.
The last local government elections were held in November 2016 and with the next polls due between November 2020 and February 2021.
Jamaicans last elected a government in February 2016, with the current administration’s five-year term ending in February 2021 and the next election due within a maximum of three months thereafter, closing the window in May.
For him, local government and national elections should not be held just because they are due, but for real benefits to the citizens and the country.
In the 2016 general election, only 47.7 per cent of the 1.82 million registered voters participated in the process, the lowest turnout since 1983, when the PNP boycotted the 1983 snap election.
The fourth Tuesday of September is recognized as National Voter Registration Day. A few seniors may be voting for the first time this year, but for the majority of Arroyo students, the 2024 election will be their first. I am angry because I am tired of seeing Black people in America continually be subject to the same behaviors by those in “positions of power.”
It’s pathetic that in the year 2020 we are still asking for fair treatment in the communities, schools, justice system, and workplace.
I am a professionally trained lobbyist and community organizer that has worked in and around politics and policy for almost 17 years at the local, state and federal levels of government and one thing that I am constantly reminded…I am Black!
So, if you have a police force that continually abuses Black people that tone is set by the Police Chief and you have a Mayor and City Council that are allowing it.
In 2016, Black voter turnout was 59.6% in the Presidential election and lower than that in some local races.
