The death toll from a landslide near an illegal gold mine on Indonesia's central island of Sulawesi had risen to 23 people, while 35 others are still missing, an official said Tuesday. Unlicensed mines are common across the mineral-rich Southeast Asian archipelago, where abandoned sites attract locals who hunt for leftover gold ore without proper safety equipment. The landslide hit a remote village in the Bone Bolango district of Gorontalo province late Saturday following intense rains. South Africa is one of the hardest-hit countries in Africa with over 740,000 infections.
The country recorded 60 more virus-related deaths on Wednesday, bringing the death toll to 20,011.
South Africa has recorded 16 726 New coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in the past 24-hours, bringing the total number of cases to 1 073 887. The country has also recorded 418 new COVID-19 related fatalities, pushing the death toll to 28 887 In a statement, Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says most of the new deaths were recorded in the Western Cape. “Regrettably, 418 more COVID-19 related deaths have been reported: Eastern Cape 66, Gauteng 66, KwaZulu-Natal 134, Mpumalanga 6, Free State 8 and Western Cape 138. This brings the total to 28 887.” Recoveries now stand at 887 701, representing a recovery rate of 82,6%. Meanwhile, Mkhize has appealed to all South Africans to help protect healthcare workers against COVID-19, by adhering to the basic safety protocols. Mkhize lit a candle at Durban’s King Edward VIII Hospital on New Year’s Eve to remember the more than 28 000 people who have died from the virus in the country. He paid tribute to health care workers who are going beyond the call of duty as the pandemic is ravaging the country. More than 43 000 healthcare workers have been infected and 438 have died from the virus. “Every time a healthcare worker is infected with COVID-19, we lose at least 10 days of labour so desperately needed at this time. We may lose these precious resources for much longer if they all become ill and need to be treated and isolated longer,” says the Health Minister. The President meanwhile led a candlelight ceremony in honour of frontline healthcare workers at the Khayelitsha District Hospital on the Cape Flats. He was accompanied by Western Cape Premier Allan Winde, Health MEC Nomafrench Mbombo, the State and Security Deputy Minister and various religious leaders. - SABC News

BY SHARON SIBINDI A SHORT film titled, It Begins With You, aimed at educating the people on climate change and the need to conserve water was launched online on Tuesday, NewsDay Life & Style has learnt. The three minute 18 seconds film was shot in Nketa 7, Bulawayo by Inkanyezi Films & Creative Pot Africa and was recently showcased at the We Art Water annual festival in Spain which ran from September to October. “This Short film was originally meant for the We Art Water film festival in Spain which ran from September to October this year,” the producer, Blessings Ndhlovu told NewsDay Life & Style. “We thought of participating in it (We Art Water film festival) to give it (short film) a try and also give a chance to our up-and-coming actors and actresses combined with experienced ones. “Unfortunately on our part we didn’t win the competition, we just took the positive part like giving our up-and-coming cast the chance to showcase them and also spread the message of conserving water. “We then released the short film on Tuesday after the competition was done as we also thought we needed to educate the people on issues to do with conserving water.” He said some people had shown appreciation of the short film, which has a cast of four, after it was launched online. “The film ensures that people become aware of the impacts of climate change and the need to conserve water for the current and future generations. “It’s the rainy season now, that is when most water sources become active and most people are harvesting rainwater,” he said. “After its launch on Tuesday, people loved it a lot, especially the fact that it is educative and gives up-and-coming talent a chance to showcase themselves.” Ndhlovu said: “More similar productions were in the pipeline, adding that the short film features Collin Ncube from the award-winning drama Dlala Ngamla who stars as Zecharia the main character. He is on a mission to teach his community the dangers of pollution and climate change in relation to conserving water and is successful in his mission.”

By SIMBARASHE SITHOLE A BINDURA-based Kombi driver has been arrested after he fatally ran over a seven-year-old boy at the 58 kilometre peg along Mukumbura-Harare Highway on Sunday. Mashonaland Central province police spokesperson Inspector Milton Mundembe confirmed the arrest of Chaparadza Zienderana (62) of Aerodrome, Bindura yesterday saying he was speeding and failed to apply brakes on time, resulting in the vehicle he was using to illegally ply the route hitting Tafadzwa Sakupwanya, who was crossing the road. In terms of government’s COVID-19 regulations, all commuter omnibuses which are not registered with the Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (Zupco) are not permitted on the road. “I can confirm a fatal road accident at the 58 kilometre peg where a seven-year-old boy succumbed to injuries sustained from the accident,” Mundembe said. It is further alleged that the now deceased Sakupwanya sustained chest pains and died as he was being rushed to Bindura provincial hospital for treatment. Police warned motorists to travel at safe speeds during this rainy season. “We are urging motorists to travel at safe speed especially during this rainy season, life is precious, hence drive to remain alive,” Mudembe said. lFollow us on Twitter @NewsDayZimbabwe
