China has about five COVID-19 vaccine candidates at different levels of trials. It was not clear what vaccine was being imported into Uganda.
One of the frontrunners is the Sinopharm vaccine developed by the Beijing Institute of Biological Product, a unit of Sinopharm’s China National Biotec Group (CNBG).

Kenya as of May 10 was the fourth most impacted country in the East / Horn of Africa region only behind Djibouti, Sudan and Somalia. Government also rolled out mass testing in virus hot spots, borders remain shut and a ban on public gatherings continues.
July 12: 10,294 cases; record 12 deaths in a day
Health Minister Mutahi Kagwe today confirmed 189 new Covid-19 cases out of a total of 1,205 samples in the last 24 hours. Kenya’s caseload now stands at 10,294. The 10,000 mark was reached on Sunday, July 12.
The country also recorded highest number of COVID-19 fatalities in a day as 12 patients succumbed bringing death toll to 197. On the recovery front, 65 patients were discharged bringing the tally to 2,946.
Meanwhile, the Standard Digital news outlet reported that some 15 nurses at a maternity hospital had tested positive for the virus. The cited the chairman of the Kenya Union of nurses as confirming the development at Pumwani Maternity Hospital.
Kenya last Friday mourned the passing of a medic who contracted the virus. The incident involving Doreen Adisa reignited the issue of ill-protected frontline workers.

July 2: tourism industry gets big boost
Kenya has taken giant steps to shore its tourism industry from the worsening economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
Tourism Minister Najib Balala announced a raft of measures on Thursday. “Due to the adverse effects of Covid-19 to the tourism and wildlife sector. We have reduced entry fees to all Kenya Wildlife Service game parks and reserves to 50%.
“This will apply for all categories of tourists (local, residents & international), effective July 1, 2020 for one year,” he added. The main interventions are:
Reduced national park entry fees for Kenyan and international visitors.
Lodges inside the parks have also been given a year’s moratorium from paying rent.
Film makers have also been given a 50% discount on filming fees charged in parks.
The minister also urged the lodges to use the rent holiday to improve services. Tourism is a mainstay of the Kenyan economy. The country us a major player in the East African region along with Uganda and Tanzania.

[East African] Mogadishu -Somalia has registered eight more Covid-19 recoveries in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number to 837, Minister of Health and Public Wellbeing Dr Fawzia Abikar Nur said on Wednesday.
Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, became the third African country to record over 10,000 cases of COVID-19. The milestone was reached on May 31 when 307 new cases took its tally to 10,162.
As Africa’s biggest economy, the federal government has continued to enforce regulations across the board even though most state governments have moved to relax restrictions.
Lagos being the economic nerve center is rolling out a progressive reopening of the economy. It is the most impacted state with over 5,000 cases as of May 31. Only Cross River State had yet to record a case.
The national response is led by the Presidential Task Force, PTF, led by SGF Boss Mustapha along with a national coordinator and relevant ministers – chief among them, Health, Foreign Affairs and Education ministries. At the heart of the response is the Nigeria Center for Disease Control, NCDC.

June 25: 22,020 cases, govt’s $6bn stimulus package
A a virtual federal executive committee meeting today, government announced a $6bn stimulus package to support businesses hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic. A committee led by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo put forward the proposal.
Nigeria as Africa’s most populous nation and having the biggest economy is looking to salvage millions of people who could slide into extreme poverty arising from the impact of the pandemic.
Government has repeatedly stressed that it was going to do all it takes to save especially small businesses and as many jobs. President Buhari months back said the virus response was going to be centered on protecting lives and livelihoods.
Nigeria is under pressure to stimulate growth and cut debt amid a slump in global oil prices. As one of the continent’s largest oil producers, funds from the commodity which has been impacted by the virus is vital for government spending.
The vice-president said the plan was also to put money into the economy, and hopefully stop it from slipping into recession. Reports indicate the the funds are intended for businesses and households.

June 24: 21,371 cases; Kaduna lawmakers ordered to test
All lawmakers in the north central Kaduna state house of assembly have been ordered to undergo COVID-19 test. The order also covers all other staff after a positive case was recorded among the assembly staff last week.
Speaker Yusuf Zailani, gave the directive which was confirmed by Ali Kalat, deputy chairman, house committee on health, on Tuesday.
Kalat, further confirmed that some lawmakers have already tested and are free from the virus. He did not give details as to how many of them.
