Fenerbahce fell short in their comeback attempt against Fatih Karagümrük in the second leg of the Turkey Women Super League semifinals on Sunday. Star forward Kennya Cordner of Trinidad and Tobago was unable to add to her league-leading 34 goals as Fenerbahce drew 2-2 with their opponents. They crashed out the tournament 3-2 on aggregate.
Needing to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg, Fenerbahce conceded a goal just before the halftime whistle. Things went from bad to worse as Fatih Karagümrük made it 2-0 with a penalty in the 58th minute.
Fenerbahce got a lifeline with an own goal in the 69th and set up a tense finish by knotting the scores in the 81st courtesy a goal from Namibian Zenatha Coleman.
But the hosts could make no further inroads as Fatih Karagümrük held on to advance to the June 12 final where they will face ALG Spor, who were 4-1 aggregate winners over Besiktas in the other semifinal.
On Instagram after the game, Cordner posted, "Lord, it's still and always will be in your hands. I will never question your will because your will was done. Not the way we wanted it to end but sometimes God has better plans for us in the future...
"Yes, it's going to hurt but we can only go up from here. Thank you for an amazing season."
