So many countries have gone into economic recession where economic growth has slowed, unemployment has gone up with prices being unstable and unpredictable. Production stalled in many countries as companies close. Johannes Marisa A lot of governments channelled funds to the health sector in order to resuscitate the sector which saw an improvement in infrastructure, medical and surgical supplies et cetera. Today, we will open our ears to the address by President Emmerson Mnangagwa when he gives his State of the Nation Address at Parliament Building. The address comes in the midst of the coronavirus that has torn the world with at least 41 million affected so far and more than 1,1 million deaths recorded. People of all professions have succumbed to this terrible virus. Europe is in the midst of a second wave of the virus and a lot of British cities have moved to level two and three of lockdown. This is a calamity for sure. Globally, health employees have been saluted for their spirited efforts in trying to contain the coronavirus. Zimbabwe did its best despite the numerous challenges that are bedevilling the health sector. Despite the strike by nurses and doctors during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the private sector stood firm. A lot of lives were saved despite the limited resources. So many treatment modalities were employed and we succeeded during that phase. We are hopeful that we will not be hit by a second wave of infections considering the high degree of complacency, ignorance and defiance by the general population. Masks are no longer worn in many areas. I was recently in Mhondoro where wearing a mask is considered taboo. Health delivery system is the organisation of people, institutions and resources that deliver healthcare services to meet the needs of the population. Included here are issues of accessibility, expenditure and resources. Those who work to deliver health services have their own expectations while the general population and the government also have theirs. There has been a lot of talk about the restructuring in the health sector which the Health minister Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga promised to undertake. \"In my 60 years, I have never seen or experienced anything like this,\" said Richard Lichan Lekuterer, his gaze level with the tops of once-towering acacia trees poking above the water, the landscape altered beyond recognition.
Baringo and the other great lakes of Kenya's Rift Valley have risen to levels not seen in at least half a century, some by several metres or more this year alone, following months of extreme rainfall scientists have linked to a changing climate.
These tremendous bodies of water have ebbed and flowed through the ages, supporting life along the banks, but records show this latest surge is unlike any witnessed in recent memory.
\"It was like the speed of the wind,\" said Lekuterer, who relocated deep inland when the water shot up in March and is preparing to move again as the tide inches nearer.
The phenomenon is causing immense flooding along a chain of fresh and saltwater lakes stretching 500 kilometres (310 miles) along an ancient fault from the deserts of Turkana in Kenya's north, to the fertile shores of Naivasha to the south.
Tens of thousands of people have been driven to higher ground and homes, grazing land and businesses abandoned as the lakes have unrelentingly pushed outward.
- 'Phenomenal' -
The crisis shows no sign of easing, with seasonal rains forecast this month threatening further inundation.
\"It has never been this bad before,\" said Murray Roberts, who has lived on Baringo nearly 70 years, where he restores degraded land with his partner Dr Elizabeth Meyerhoff through their Rehabilitation of Arid Environments Trust.
Baringo has swollen about 70 square kilometres (27 square miles) since 2011 but rose sharply earlier this year, flooding their offices and a nearby dispensary.
Roberts' childhood home, and a family holiday business, disappeared beneath the surface.
Like Baringo, the surge at Lake Naivasha, some 200 kilometres south, began slowly about a decade ago, evoking little concern as the basin refilled after a long dry spell.
But it kept rising and in April suddenly accelerated, soon eclipsing the last historic high measured in the 1960s. The lake is now tracking closer to an extreme peak recorded in the early 20th century.
A monitoring station run by the Water Resources Authority (WRA), a government agency, indicates the lake rose 2.7 metres (8.9 feet) between April and June, pushing water half a kilometre inland.
\"It's been phenomenal,\" said Guy Erskine, as hippos wallowed in his submerged hotel at Sanctuary Farm, a conservancy on Lake Naivasha his family has owned since 1978.

MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa (pictured) has come under fire from his supporters in Chiredzi for neglecting a former Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services officer fired for supporting him. BY Garikai Mafirakureva Chamisa promised to include John Mahlabera in his security team when he was campaigning for the 2018 general elections, but has not honoured the pledge two years on. The ex-prison guard is now living in a squalor in the small resort town of Kariba. Mahlabera, who was stationed at Chiredzi Prison, was dismissed on charges of using traitorous or disloyal words towards President Emmerson Mnangagwa in 2018. During one of his campaign rallies held at Tshovani Stadium, Chiredzi on June 10, 2018 the youthful opposition leader praised Mahlabera’s bravery for taking Mnangagwa’s repressive government head-on. He went on to parade him in front of his supporters and offered him a job as one of his security aides. Mahlabera was accused of tweeting in favour of Chamisa on April 9, 2018. He was also accused of undermining Mnangagwa and attending an MDC Alliance rally. Part of Mahlabera’s charge sheet read: “He wrote the following words on his Twitter account, Come to Chiredzi my president, thus, showing loyalty to the opposition party president, thereby exhibiting disloyalty and disgraceful conduct to the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe.” On the second count, he was found guilty of contravening section 3(46) of Prisons (Staff) (Disciplinary) Regulations 1984 after he attended Chamisa’s rally which was held in Chiredzi. Mahlabera said he tried to follow up on the job offer through text messages. But Chamisa only said “call”. He said several attempts to reach Chamisa were fruitless as his mobile number was no longer reachable. But party deputy spokesperson Clifford Hlatywayo said: “We have lost contact with him and the other guy who was also victimised. If you get in touch with him, tell him to contact the mayor of Kariba. The mayor will then contact us so that we can see how best he can be helped.”

A RECORD 10 Zanu PF candidates have submitted CVs to contest in party primary elections scheduled for this weekend for the Marondera East seat. BY JAIROS SAUNYAMA The seat fell vacant following the death of Patrick Chidakwa. This is the second time Zanu PF has had a huge number of candidates battling it out in primaries. Goromonzi South recorded 13 candidates in 2018. Last weekend, Zanu PF convened a provincial elections committee meeting in Marondera where it was announced that 10 candidates had shown interest in contesting in the primaries. Provincial secretary for administration Kudzai Majuru said all was set for the vetting process. “We are waiting for the vetting process to be concluded before we get a final date for the primary elections,” he said. He is an Anglican priest and has run for president six times
But the opposition parties have not managed to unite in this election.
The other candidate is Alain St Ange, who was in the opposition before joining the government tourism minister.
He is running for the One Seychelles party which he created a year ago.
The main concern for the voters is the economy, which has slowed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
About 700 people have lost their jobs, according to government figures. The idyllic islands famed for their white beaches are a hub for tourism, particularly with those on their honeymoon.
But the coronavirus pandemic has closed borders, hampering the key tourism industry.
Another key theme of the campaign has been corruption, a largely taboo topic in the tiny country where everyone knows everyone and business and politics are often intertwined.
The Seychelles is classed by Transparency International as being perceived as the least corrupt country in Africa and among the 30 least corrupt in the world.
However it is also a tax paradise housing numerous offshore companies.
