Jordan, Michael Jeffrey, 1963–, American basketball player, b. Brooklyn, N.Y. As a freshman at the Univ. of North Carolina, he made the shot that won the 1982 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) tournament final over Georgetown. Joining the Chicago Bulls of the National Basketball Association (NBA) in 1984, he was the 1985 Rookie of the Year and developed into the outstanding guard of the late 1980s and the 1990s. From 1991 to 1993, Jordan led the Bulls to three NBA championships. In 1993 he announced his retirement, saying he had achieved all his goals in basketball, and began a second career as a baseball player. After two unspectacular years in the minor-league system of the Chicago White Sox, however, he returned to the NBA early in 1995, and in 1996–98 he led the Bulls to three more championships. In 1999 he retired again. The following year he became a part owner of the NBAs Washington Wizards, but in 2001 sold his share of the team and signed with the Wizards and played for two seasons.

Noted especially for his leaping ability, the 6-ft 6-in. (198-cm) Jordan is widely considered the greatest basketball player ever. The NBA career leader in scoring average, he was the leagues leading scorer each year from 1986 to 1993 and 1996 to 1998, for a record ten titles, and is third on the all-time points list. Jordan also starred for the 1984 and 1992 gold-medal-winning U.S. Olympic teams. Known as Air Jordan and His Airness, he popularized basketball around the world for a time he was probably the worlds most famous person. His commercial endorsements and investments have made him the worlds wealthiest athlete. In 2010 he became the majority owner of the NBAs Charlotte Bobcats he first invested in the team in 2006.

Both Jones and Robinett, 49, said if elected they would help Ferguson to continue implementing changes in city practices since the 2014 unrest, including a consent decree worked out with the federal government.

Jones said Tuesday night that one of her initial goals as mayor would be “to help stabilize the businesses in Ferguson,” especially those damaged in the recent violence.

Jones’ election continues a significant increase in African American political influence in the city in recent years.

In 2014, there was just one Black council member.

Now there are four out of six, although Jones will be moving soon, of course, into the mayor’s seat.

Rwanda football great Olivier Karekezi has started talks with SC Kiyovu about becoming their next head coach to replace interim coach Emmanuel Ruremesha.

Karekezi, the national team's all-time leading scorer at 25 goals, previously coached Rayon Sports for one month in 2017 - despite signing a two-year deal - after falling out with players and some senior members of the club administration.

Speaking to Times Sport on Monday, a source within SC Kiyovu management that preferred anonymity, confirmed that talks are underway between Karekezi and the club and they looked promising.

\"Everyone (at the club) would wish to have Karekezi as our coach, his vast knowledge and experience in the game would be a valuable addition.\"

After playing for local giants APR for six years between 1998 and 2004, during which he won several titles with the army side, Karekezi embarked on his professional career journey where he featured for different sides in Sweden, Norway and Tunisia.

Universities and high schools reopened in Tanzania Monday, despite very little information on the exact figures of the spread of the coronavirus in the country.

On the campus of the University of Dar es Salaam, new hand-washing stations have been installed.

“The University of Dar es Salaam has reopened its doors as of today (Monday) and we have started courses, as we have made adequate arrangements to ensure that we conduct our activities while complying with the prescribed measures to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus,” said Prof. Bonavecture Rutinwa, Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Dar es Salaam.

FORMER Caps United and Highlanders speedy winger Gabriel Nyoni, who now plays for Maritzburg United in South Africa, hopes to emerge from the COVID-19-induced break a better player.

Nyoni joined the great trek to South Africa midway through the 2019 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League after impressing The Team of Choice while at Caps United.

Nyoni has not completed his first full season in South Africa after the South African topflight was suspended with 10 games to go.

It’s more than two months now since the league was put on ice and South Africa is on lockdown and the speedster says the COVID-19 break has given him ample time to reflect on his career.

However, I now miss football big time,” Nyoni said.

Garvey, Marcus, 1887–1940, American proponent of black nationalism, b. Jamaica. At the age of 14, Garvey went to work as a printers apprentice. After leading (1907) an unsuccessful printers strike in Jamaica, he edited several newspapers in Costa Rica and Panama. During a period in London he took law classes and became interested in African history and black nationalism. His concern for the problems of blacks led him to found (1914) the Universal Negro Improvement Association and in 1916 he moved to New York City and opened a branch in Harlem. The UNIA was an organization designed to promote the spirit of race pride. Broadly, its goals were to foster worldwide unity among all blacks and to establish the greatness of the African heritage. The organization quickly spread in black communities throughout the United States, the Caribbean, and Central America, and soon had thousands of members.

Garvey addressed himself to the lowest classes of blacks and rejected any notion of integration. Convinced that blacks could not secure their rights in countries where they were a minority race, he urged a back to Africa movement. In Africa, he said, an autonomous black state could be established, possessing its own culture and civilization, free from the domination of whites. Garvey was the most influential black leader of the early 1920s. His brilliant oratory and his newspaper, Negro World, brought him millions of followers. His importance declined, however, when his misuse of funds intended to establish a steamship company that would serve members of the African diaspora, the Black Star Line, resulted in a mail fraud conviction. He entered jail in 1925 and was deported to Jamaica two years later. From this time on his influence decreased, and he died in relative obscurity.

Didier Drogba , in full Didier Yves Drogba Tébily (born March 11, 1978, Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire), Ivorian professional football (soccer) player who was Côte d’Ivoire’s all-time leader in goals scored in international matches and who was twice named the African Footballer of the Year (2006, 2009).

At age five Drogba was sent to France in the care of an uncle, a professional footballer. After three years he returned home, only to go back to France after three more years in Côte d’Ivoire. At age 15 Drogba became an apprentice with second-division Levallois, outside Paris, and then in 1997–98 he moved to Le Mans FC, where in his second season he signed as a professional.

In January 2002 Drogba joined top-division Guingamp, tallying 17 goals in 34 league games. This success prompted a 2003 trade to Olympique de Marseille, where he scored 19 goals in 35 domestic matches and an additional 11 goals in European play as the club reached the 2004 Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Cup final, where it lost 2–0 to Valencia of Spain.

Drogba moved to England’s Chelsea FC in 2004 in a trade from Marseille. Though Chelsea won its first Premier League championship in 50 years the following season, its new centre-forward was inconsistent. Drogba was quick, alert, and supremely confident in his own ability, though he showed a tendency to a quick temper in matches. Even in his second season, when Chelsea’s title was successfully defended, fan appreciation was still muted. Yet by the end of the 2006–07 season, when Chelsea failed in its attempt to take a third straight league championship, Drogba had won over most of the skeptical Chelsea fans by being the league’s top scorer (with 20 goals) and by finishing the season with an overall tally of 33 goals. In addition, he was the key player in Chelsea’s winning both the Football Association (FA) Cup and Carling Cup trophies that season, as he scored the club’s only goals in the finals of those two tournaments. Drogba helped lead Chelsea to the 2008 Champions League final,

“One of our goals during these strange times is to make sure we provide our students and faculty with all the tools they need, while not adding to the stress everyone is already under,” says Will Breard, the libraries’ circulation manager.

Since the mandatory shift to online learning, a freshly-gloved Breard has been hard at work ensuring students are able to check out the libraries’ physical resources: laptops, books, DVDs and more.

No matter their need, faculty and staff stand ready to help students via Zoom, online chat, email and the traditional telephone.

“As one of the librarians teaching a course online, I found myself making a more distinct effort in checking in with my students to make sure they felt supported and not overwhelmed by the shift to e-learning.”

Regardless of the circumstances, the College of Charleston Libraries remain steadfast in their mission to provide premier resources and information literacy to every user — in-person or online.

by KEVIN MAPASURE WARRIORS coach Zdravko Logarusic has hinted at a defensive approach to their African Nations Championships (Chan) finals Group A clash against Burkina Faso despite the team desperately needing a win to keep alive their hope of qualifying for the quarter-finals of the tournament. Zimbabwe lost their opening match to hosts Cameroon and can ill-afford anything other than a win if they harbour hopes of finishing as one of the top two sides in their pool. Logarusic concedes that his team is not prepared to play to the best of its ability, with everything seemingly going against his side. But he retains some hope that they can pull through. “If you want to have a good wedding you have to have good preparation. That’s the same thing with Chan. When I went with the Sudan national team to Morocco, I had players in camp for two months and we camped in three different countries, we had two training sessions each day and that’s why we produced results,” Logarusic told a media conference yesterday. “Now we are talking about Burkina Faso. This is a serious team like Mali. You see their movement with and without the ball. They can go and play at Afcon, not just Chan. “Now we know our weaknesses and we know our strengths. We have to find a way to contain them and also do something upfront. We know we must win but we can't put three players upfront and say let’s play an open game. “We have to play smart, we have to use what we have in our team, we have to use our strengths and we have to try to damage them in small details, where they are weak, but we are not seeing too many weaknesses in Burkina Faso or Mali but for sure this is not the Olympics for us to just come and be there. We are here to compete and we will try our best to compete properly and not disappoint people.” Nothing has gone well for Zimbabwe so far, to start with Logarusic had to pick a squad from players that never played competitive football for over a year. To add to that they could not start training on time due to government protocol over the pandemic. Once training started it also had to be stopped until the eve of their departure to Cameroon after 15 players and officials tested positive for COVID-19. As if that was not enough three players, Andrew Mbeba, Qadr Amini and Thomas Chideu, have been deemed too ill to play and will miss the Burkina Faso match. Richard Hachiro is struggling with a knee injury and is ruled out of today’s clash while Ronald Chitiyo is also carrying an injury, But the medical team is trying to patch him up for the match. The coaches have 16 infield players to select from. In the face of all these problems, they approach the Burkina Faso match with a lot of caution, hoping to contain their opponent’s threat, while looking to make the most of the few chances that come their way. Logarusic is likely to make two changes to the team that started against Cameroon, Hachiro and Wellington Taderera are likely to be left out with Farau Matare and Partson Jaure tipped to replace them. The sorority sisters of Zeta Phi Beta do not play games when it comes to supporting the youth.

The sorority recently donated a $100,000 scholarship to a graduating senior in North Carolina.

Cayla Withers, a recent graduate of A.L. Brown High School in Kannapolis, NC, was awarded Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated’s Triumphant Founder Arizona Cleaver Stemons Centennial Scholarship in the amount of $100,000 on June 19, 2020.

“I am my ancestor’s wildest dreams…this scholarship will allow me to accomplish my goals, andone day inspire kids who look like me, from communities like mine,” Withers wrote in her application.

We at Watch The Yard would like to commend the sorors of Zeta Phi Beta for their continued support for the community.

Usually, when we recognise that persons are having challenges, the first thing that we recommend is that they reach out and interact with people.

“There are multifaceted amounts of challenges that we are being faced, and all the goals and aspirations for the year must be put aside, with the focus being just to stay alive and well,” he said, sharing that there are steps that can be put in place to protect one’s mental health, with the most important being to maintain some level of organisation in one’s daily routines or activities.

Noting that some persons can’t tell “Wednesday form Sunday” anymore, Walcott warned that it is a dangerous state for persons to be in.

Walcott also advised that needs must be structured, whether going to the supermarket or doing any other chores, he said it should be planned in time frames, preferably in slots that would be least occupied.

So exercise is not just about your well-being, but it may actually be the difference between you being infected and a person that goes on a mortality statistic, which is going to increase,” Walcott opined.
