He replaces Debretsion Gebremichael, whose immunity from prosecution was removed Thursday.

Meanwhile, Amnesty International said Thursday that scores of civilians were killed in a \"massacre\" in the Tigray region, that witnesses blamed on forces backing the local ruling party.

The \"massacre\" is the first reported incident of large-scale civilian fatalities in a week-old conflict between the regional ruling party, the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), and the government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, winner of last year's Nobel Peace Prize.

\"Amnesty International can today confirm... that scores, and likely hundreds, of people were stabbed or hacked to death in Mai-Kadra (May Cadera) town in the southwest of Ethiopia's Tigray Region on the night of 9 November,\" the rights group said in a report.

Amnesty said it had \"digitally verified gruesome photographs and videos of bodies strewn across the town or being carried away on stretchers.\"

The dead \"had gaping wounds that appear to have been inflicted by sharp weapons such as knives and machetes,\" Amnesty said, citing witness accounts.

Witnesses said the attack was carried out by TPLF-aligned forces after a defeat at the hands of the Ethiopian military, though Amnesty said it \"has not been able to confirm who was responsible for the killings\".

It nonetheless called on TPLF commanders and officials to \"make clear to their forces and their supporters that deliberate attacks on civilians are absolutely prohibited and constitute war crimes\".

Abiy ordered military operations in Tigray on November 4, saying they were prompted by a TPLF attack on federal military camps -- a claim the party denies.

The region has been under a communications blackout ever since, making it difficult to verify competing claims on the ground.

Abiy said Thursday his army had made major gains in western Tigray.

Thousands of Ethiopians have fled across the border into neighboring Sudan, and the UN is sounding the alarm about a humanitarian crisis in Tigray.

Name at birth: Trayvon Benjamin Martin

Florida teen Trayvon Martin was killed 26 February 2012 by George Zimmerman, a 28 year-old volunteer for the areas neighborhood watch. The incident touched off an intense public debate on police conduct, gun laws and racial profiling. Trayvon Martin was a 17-year-old African American from the Miami area who was visiting his fathers fianceé at her home in Retreat at Twin Lakes, a gated community in Sanford, Florida, a suburb of Orlando. On a Sunday evening around 7 p.m., George Zimmerman called the non-emergency police number to report Martin as someone who looks like hes up to no good. Martin, it was later established, was walking home unarmed from a convenience store, having purchased Skittles candy and a can of Arizona Iced Tea. Zimmerman, who was armed with a 9mm pistol, followed Martin briefly, and at some point an altercation ensued. By 7:30, Martin was dead, and police on the scene detained Zimmerman, but released him without arrest after he claimed self-defense. Two weeks later, the Sanford Police Department turned the case over to the Florida State Attorneys office, who initiated an independent investigation. A recording of the call Zimmerman made to police on the night of the shooting was made public on 16 March, and raised new questions. Conflicting witness reports in the press and the official clampdown on information fueled a media frenzy. Some accused Zimmerman of assuming Martin was a criminal simply because he was a young black man in a hooded sweatshirt (or hoodie). Others deemed Zimmerman justified in his actions. Rallies were held around the country for the slain teenager, and hoodies were worn in a show of solidarity. Zimmerman ducked publicity while the investigation continued. The United States Justice Department and the FBI also began investigations, based on the possibility that Trayvon Martins civil rights had been violated. Florida prosecutors arrested George Zimmerman, and in late April of 2012 he was charged with second-degree murder.

TMZ reports that Thomas Lane, the officer who had just four days on the job has been able to post $750K on a $1M dollar bail.

Lane is the one officer out of the four who asked if Floyd should be laid on his side while he was lying prone on the street in handcuffs.

However, Lane, along with the three other ex-officers including Derek Chauvin, who had his knee on Floyd’s neck, was seen pinning Floyd down.

Despite Lane’s request to turn Floyd over, Chauvin would not let up and Lane’s family says that he was prohibited by the chain of command to intervene more.

Lane and former Minneapolis police officers Tao Thao, J Alexander Kueng were all charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder in a case that has generated worldwide protests for the last 16 days.

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis announced his office would look into the police-involved death of Elijah McClain after public outcry.

McClain was walking home from a convenience store on the night of Aug. 24, 2019, with four cans of Brisk iced tea when he was approached by Aurora Police officers.

Aurora Police claim McClain did not comply when they asked him to stop walking, saying McClain said, “I have a right to go where I am going,” and continued resisting when they tried to detain him, leading three officers to place him in a “carotid control hold.”

The slightly built McClain struggled with officers Nathan Woodyard, Jason Rosenblatt, and Randy Roedema for nearly 15 minutes — repeatedly sobbing and vomiting — before a total of four fire department medics arrived on the scene and sedated him with 500 milligrams of ketamine — one medic told investigators for the 17th Judicial District District Attorney’s Office he gave a dose suitable for what he estimated to be a 220-pound man — and loaded the subdued man into an ambulance.

Change.org user Piper Rundell started a petition to 17th Judicial District District Attorney Dave Young, Mayor Mike Coffman and the Aurora Police Department open a new investigation.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Hollywood celebrities, musicians and the politically powerful filed into a sanctuary in front of the golden casket of George Floyd for a memorial service Thursday as mourners began a three-city farewell to the man who was anonymous in life but sparked global protests for justice in death.

The service unfolded at North Central University as a judge a few blocks away set bail at $750,000 each for the three fired Minneapolis police officers charged with aiding and abetting murder in his death.

Entertainer Kevin Hart joins guests at North Central University Thursday, June 4, 2020, at a memorial service for George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Memorials to Floyd are set to take place in three cities over six days: After the Minneapolis event, his body will go to Raeford, North Carolina, where he was born, for a public viewing and private family service on Saturday.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The mayor of Minneapolis called Wednesday for criminal charges against the white police officer seen on video kneeling against the neck of a handcuffed black man who complained that he could not breathe and died in police custody.

Based on the video, Mayor Jacob Frey said officer Derek Chauvin should be charged in the death of George Floyd.

The day after Floyd died, Chauvin and three other officers were fired — an act that did not stem the flood of anger that followed the widely seen video shot on Memorial Day outside a convenience store.

Police Chief Medaria Arradondo, who rose to the top job after his predecessor was forced out following the 2017 shooting of an unarmed white woman by a black Minneapolis officer, urged protesters to “be respectful.”

In calling for charges, the mayor contrasted Floyd’s death with others involving police that turned on split-second decisions by officers.

Another “Karen” has gone viral after she dared to taunt a Black woman in Sacramento, and got a response she probably wasn’t expecting.

Nicknamed “Sacramento Karen” she accepted a challenge to call a Black woman the n-word, in a convenience store.

As the back and forth grew more heated, the Black woman told “Karen” that if she called her the n-word again, the outcome would be ugly.

“Sacramento Karen” comes after “Officer Karen” went viral for dramatically crying because she had anxiety about taking food at a McDonald’s drive thru.
