\"Everybody on social media does just take everything for a joke.\" She said she did not get any useful information about her missing pet and is constantly at edge wondering if Peep is in pain or worse, dead.

\"Some people love materialistic things and they don't how to value life. I'm not looking for attention or fame, I just want my chicken back.\"

Khan said her mother has been a rock of support and even though she was at first sceptical about posting the missing poster on Facebook, she relented so that \"the person who took Peep will realise just how much that chicken is of value to me.\"

This newspaper decided to not use Khan's image to protect her from further trauma.

The soft-spoken woman was emotional and on the verge of tears as she recalled her time with Peep. She said her pet lived indoors, watched television, and was at her side for most of the day whenever she is at home.

On April 24, she let Peep outside to mingle with her companions, Springs and Browns, two other layers she bought to keep her beloved chicken company. Sometime between noon and 3 pm, Peep went missing and led to a frantic search in the rural community where hunting is a vocation. A PRIVATE motion brought by Independent Senator Amrita Deonarine calling on government to bring to Parliament a foreign-exchange (forex) policy within six months was defeated in the Senate on Tuesday.

If successful, the motion would have forced government to table in Parliament within six months, a comprehensive policy framework that will guide key stakeholders, how it Government intends to navigate the tightness in the foreign exchange (forex) market to overcome downside risks in the medium and long-term.

This came after the Senate rejected separate amendments proposed to the motion by Deonarine and Tourism Minister Randall Mitchell. In all three cases, the votes between government, opposition and independent senators were tied, prompting Senate President Christine Kangaloo to break the tie with a casting vote.

As she concluded the debate, Deonarine proposed an amendment to her original motion, which removed the words \"comprehensive\" and \"downside risks.\" Deonarine said it was \"difficult in a dynamic environment with an energy- based economy that is faced with volatility to overcome downside risks in the medium and long term because policy measures are always subject to revision.\"

Leader of Government Business Dr Amery Browne requested a ten-minute suspension of the sitting. When the sitting resumed, all 15 government senators voted against Deonarine's amendment. The six opposition senators and the nine independent senators voted for it.

Kangaloo explained that in exercising her casting vote, regarding an amendment to a motion, the consideration was to keep the motion in its original form and maintain the status quo.

After Deonarine's amendment was rejected, the Senate considered Mitchell's amendment which proposed that Government give a statement in Parliament in six months about how it plans to address the forex situation.

All 15 government senators voted for this amendment. The six opposition and nine independent senators did not. Kangaloo then cast her vote, resulting in Mitchell's amendment being rejected.

When the vote on Deonarine's original motion was called for, government, opposition and independent senators were tied for a third time. On this occasion, Kangaloo voted with the Government and the motion was defeated.

Before the vote, Minister in the Ministry of Finance Brian Manning said, \"The issue is a simple one. Today in Trinidad and Tobago, the demand for forex outstrips the supply.\" He added this is \"a situation that will be brought to equilibrium over time.\"

MOST people in Trinidad and Tobago were not savvy investors, but rather, might only buy mutual funds as a form of long-term savings, said Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) CEO Lystra Lucillio on Wednesday.

She was replying to a question by Trade Minister Paula Gopee-Scoon at a virtual sitting of Parliament's Public Accounts Committee (PAC), chaired by Davendranath Tancoo.

Gopee-Scoon said despite educational programmes run by the SEC, she did not think the TT public were sophisticated investors. She asked if the public understood the SEC's role and the benefits, risks and liabilities of investing, and she sought the CEO's views.

Lucillio said a 2009 baseline survey had found many people knew little about the SEC and had a limited view on investing.

\"Many persons may not have been aware of the role and function of the SEC. But when we look at the investment public there are quite a number of persons who are investors, (but) whether they are completely aware they are investors or not...Sometimes what happens (is) you have a situation where with, say, mutual funds, persons invest in it, but in their view they are not totally thinking of it as an investment. Persons almost align that to some sort of long-term savings.\"

She said the SEC has partnered with other regulators and the National Financial Literacy Campaign to try to improve people's understanding of investing.

The SEC also has a free online investing course, which she urged people to check and get a certificate of participation. It has supplied information to schoolteachers, and run online ads educating about investment schemes.

Gopee-Scoon asked how the TT public would be rated as investors on a scale of one-ten.

Lucillio replied, \"There are quite a number people that invest. I'd say probably you are looking at you are looking at eight and a half, nine (out of ten), somewhere, because of the number of persons who engage in investing in some form.

\"On the other hand, if it is that they actually consider themselves as investors, as opposed to a long-term savings vehicle that they may think of it, I'd say it is probably closer to 6.5 or seven.\"

Tancoo used the occasion to call for improvements to the SEC's investment protection app, which he said had seemed to be not fully functional when he had recently tried to use it.

Independent Senator Charrise Seepersad also expressed concerns about the TT public as investors, saying she was unsure that people knew when to get in and when to get out of particular mutual funds.

Otherwise, Lucillio said the SEC would send its financial statements to the Ministry of Finance in May and would complete its 2022-2026 strategic plan within two weeks.

SEC chairman Enid Zephyrine said the SEC cannot yet sign off on those financials, as it was still to receive a management letter from its auditors.

JSC vice chairman, Opposition Senator Jearlean John, asked how many government bodies had not yet made their statutory filing at the SEC.

\"If they don't file, it will affect their ability to borrow,\" she

The House of Representatives unanimously passed the Cannabis Control Bill 2020 on Friday to regulate the commercialisation of marijuana. According to the bill's long title, it will \"provide for the regulatory control of the handling of cannabis for certain purposes, the establishment of the Trinidad and Tobago Cannabis Licensing Authority and connected matters.\"

The bill's passage came after the House approved a motion to adopt the report of the joint select committee (JSC) on the bill. Those speaking on the motion were Fyzabad MP Dr Lackram Bodoe, Sport Minister Shamfa Cudjoe, Pointe-a-Pierre MP David Lee, La Horquetta/Talparo MP Foster Cummings and Moruga/Tableland MP Michelle Benjamin.

In his wind-up on the motion Minister of Local Government and Rural Affairs Faris Al-Rawi said the bill would give the country opportunities to make some \"serious money\" even as the broader relaxation of the law on cannabis consumption (by the Dangerous Drugs (Amendment) Bill has greatly helped to unclog the country's legal justice system. He said the commercial handling of cannabis under the Cannabis Control Bill will not be impeded by the Dangerous Drugs Act, Proceeds of Crime Act, Medical Board Act, or Pharmacy Board Act.

He said the bill will allow individuals entering the cannabis industry to become bankable, without any risk of correspondent bank failure.

\"People have the opportunity to make some serious money in a serious industry.\"

The AG promised regulations which will go into greater detail on aspects of the bill. He said the regulations will include \"an explosion care and caution\" in the management of cannabis, as opposed to a mere economic approach. \"The opportunities in rural areas from an economic standpoint will be tremendous.\"

Al-Rawi said TT could get the opportunity to market cannabis by way of its point of origin, just like the categorisation of champagne. He said his constituents of San Fernando West were lined up behind the economic opportunities presented by the new bill. He said that on behalf of the people of TT he could say there was \"great excitement\" over the new bill.

Those speaking on the motion were Fyzabad MP Dr Lackram Bodoe, Sport Minister Shamfa Cudjoe, Pointe-a-Pierre MP David Lee, La Horquetta/Talparo MP Foster Cummings and Moruga/Tableland MP Michelle Benjamin.\r\n\nIn his wind-up on the motion Minister of Local Government and Rural Affairs Faris Al-Rawi said the bill would give the country opportunities to make some \"serious money\" even as the broader relaxation of the law on cannabis consumption (by the Dangerous Drugs (Amendment) Bill has greatly helped to unclog the country's legal justice system. He said the commercial handling of cannabis under the Cannabis Control Bill will not be impeded by the Dangerous Drugs Act, Proceeds of Crime Act, Medical Board Act, or Pharmacy Board Act.\r\n\nHe said the bill will allow individuals entering the cannabis industry to become bankable, without any risk of correspondent bank failure.\r\n\n\"People have the opportunity to make some serious money in a serious industry.\"\r\n\nThe AG promised regulations which will go into greater detail on aspects of the bill. He said the regulations will include \"an explosion care and caution\" in the management of cannabis, as opposed to a mere economic approach. \"The opportunities in rural areas from an economic standpoint will be tremendous.\"\r\n\nAl-Rawi said TT could get the opportunity to market cannabis by way of its point of origin, just like the categorisation of champagne. Cricket West Indies chief executive, Johnny Grave, has admitted to being surprised by the timing of Kieron Pollard’s retirement from international cricket. The 34-year-old Trinidadian ended his 2-½ year tenure as West Indies white-ball captain when he called time on his career earlier this month, with the Caribbean side already preparing for the Twenty20 World Cup in Australia next October.“I thought he would continue at least until the T20 World Cup in Australia,” Grave said.“Obviously the 50-over game is that longer format and the older you get, the more difficult it gets to play, and that may not have surprised me if he had called it a day after the T20 World Cup later this year.

On Thursday, Nudge Caribbean will feature small businesses making a difference in their communities by livestreaming a virtual production - Nudged Now on the company's YouTube channel and Facebook page from 6-7 pm AST (Atlantic Standard Time).

Founded in 2020 by local designer Anya Ayoung-Chee, and Massy Group's senior vice president of People and Culture Julie Avey, Nudge Caribbean was created to help entrepreneurs withstand the economic fallout of covid19 by giving them resources to develop and thrive.

In a media release, Nudge said Thursday's virtual event will showcase the stories of the small businesses it supports.

It added that Nudge Now is a film directed by yet another small business-owner, the Trinidadian director Oliver Milne.

'From the designers Nudge works with to the music it features in its communication (Nudge recently partnered with Freetown Collective x Stadic on their video for the song 'Kasandra'), Nudge's approach is a mindful one, always seeking to amplify the power of the Caribbean.'

A conversation between Nudge's co-founders and several entrepreneurs will also be featured in the production.

Mayaro/Rio Claro resident Tricia Alexander, and her business Art Naturals: Soap and Spa Essentials, is one of the businesses supported by Nudge.

On being featured in the production, Alexander said, 'It is such a blessing to be a part of a team that genuinely cares about your success.'

Alexander's business makes natural lotions, hair products and other products from locally sourced ingredients.

Executive chairman of Integrated Retail Portfolio at the Massy Group of Companies, David Affonso, said the company was honoured to support the effort.

Affonso explained, 'All companies started at some point as someone's dream. But it takes that belief in self, commitment, courage and all the rest of it to achieve success.

'We have an obligation to give back to the communities and countries where we operate.'
