Brother of mechanic killed by police: Kisseh is at peace now - Trinidad and Tobago Newsday

Despite the grief of losing his younger brother, Akhenatan Lendor Jr says he is not in mourning as he feels the best way to honour him is to celebrate his life.

Lendor's younger brother Kisseh Lendor, 37, was shot and killed while delivering a transmission to a customer in Freedom Road Extension, Chaguanas, on May 16.

According to the official police report, the officers were conducting follow-up enquiries on a robbery in the area earlier that day when they were shot at.

The officers returned fire hitting Kisseh and Lijel Hem Lee, 19, killing them.

Police said a pistol was found and seized.

The relatives of Kisseh and Hem Lee have disputed the official account given by the police, claiming the shooting was unprovoked.

During his eulogy at his brother's funeral at the Carenage RC Church, on Monday afternoon, Lendor maintained that his brother was not involved in any criminal activities.

He added that, while his family and neighbourhood would be pained by his brother's death, he was optimistic that some good would come from the tragedy noting the outpouring of support extended from the Carenage community.

"Good will come out of this. There are plenty of families and parents who have been in similar situations and they are opening back every case.

"The only thing my family ever did was pray. Our family is just a prayerful family, and I'm talking about family from all sides."

Lendor said he knew Kisseh was at peace and was comforted by the fact that he no longer had to deal with the "evils" of the world.

He noted that his brother was well-respected and liked by everyone in their neighbourhood, joking that he was the only person Kisseh had "problems" with.

"Even when he was quarrelling and stuttering it would end up in laughter.

"Sometimes you couldn't even understand what he was saying but he used to laugh."

During her tribute, Lendor's mother Erline Lendor thanked God for giving her the strength to address the mourners and urged the community to adopt a more spiritual approach to overcoming challenges.

She called on Carenage to practice prayer at an individual and neighbourhood level to build a better society.

"The same pain I feel for my son, I know many people in Carenage feel the same way. Prayers are very powerful. The only way to conquer the devil is by prayer."

Lendor was buried at the Carenage Cemetery on School Street.
