In recognition of Sickle Cell Awareness Month, we take the opportunity to highlight the challenges young adults with sickle cell disease (SCD) face when transitioning from pediatric to adult medical care. SCD is a lifelong inherited blood disorder that mainly affects people of African ancestry and other minorities. Complicating matters, people with SCD are at increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19, adding an additional layer of stress.
