BARCELONA,  (Reuters) – Struggling Espanyol said yesterday they have sacked coach Abelardo Fernandez, the third manager they have dispensed with this season, as they fight to extend their 26-year stay in La Liga.

“Espanyol announce that Abelardo Fernandez has been relieved of his duties as first team coach,” the Barcelona club said in a statement.

“This decision has been taken due to the team’s recent performances and with the clear aim of keeping the club in the top flight.”

The club added in a later statement that sporting director Francisco Rufete would take charge of the team for the remainder of the season.

In 13 matches in charge, Fernandez earned three victories and five draws as well as five defeats.

The site of the former Michael Reese Hospital in Bronzeville may be turned into a massive, mixed-use, 3.5 billion development that could dramatically change the area’s landscape near the lakefront.

During a virtual community meeting last week on Zoom with residents and Alderman Sophia King (4th Ward), Farpoint Development presented a plan that they say will create jobs while honoring Bronzeville’s rich heritage.

Farpoint developers say they plan to submit their zoning proposal to the City Council this month, but questions remain whether developers will receive tax increment funding (TIF) for the project.

The proposal also calls for a new Metra train station on 31st Street near Lake Shore Drive.

Developers have reportedly agreed that 65 percent of all businesses on the site must be minority-owned to help create opportunities for jobs and investment in Bronzeville.

This is just the latest Pennsylvania poll to show Biden with an advantage. A mid-July Fox News poll put Biden's margin at 11 points.

What's the point: Trump won the 2016 election in large part because he was able to break through the big \"blue\" wall in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. He did so on the backs of White voters, and in particular White voters without a college degree. This led to those infamous memes of reporters seeking out voters in diners across America.

But today, Biden leads Trump in these Great Lake (or Rust Belt) battlegrounds because he's eating into Trump's margins among those very groups. These gains have big implications for the electoral college because they suggest Biden's easiest path to victory may be through these three states.

Biden has clear leads in an average of the last three CNN approved polls in the states of Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. On average, Biden is up by 9 points in Michigan, 11 points in Pennsylvania and 10 points in Wisconsin.

Biden's upward trajectory is because of vast improvements among White voters in a comparison of Biden's standing in each poll to how Clinton did with them in an average of post-election estimates from the Cooperative Congressional Election Study and Center for American Progress.

Post-election estimates aren't the most ideal comparison to pre-election polling, which would be accurate pre-election polling (something missing from these states in 2016). Like any poll (or poll average), these post-election estimates are subject to error.

Still, the size of Biden's rise over Clinton in these states is clear enough that it's well outside the range of any statistical anomaly.

Michigan: Trump leads by an average of 3 points among White voters. Four years ago, Trump won amongst these voters by 15 points.

Pennsylvania: Biden is ahead by 3 points with White voters. In 2016, Trump won them by 15 points.

Wisconsin: Biden's up by 6 points with White voters. Last election, Trump took them by 7 points.

The key takeaway here isn't the exact shift in each state (which is subject to a margin of error), but that what we're seeing nationally in regards to White voters is occurring in the key Rust Belt states as well. Using the method nationally, Biden's improved from Clinton's 15-point loss to a mere 3-point deficit against Trump in the latest live interview polls. (This is quite similar to the movement seen using pre-election polls as our 2016 comparison point, which also shows a double-digit improvement for Biden.)

Obviously, the fact that Clinton underperformed her pre-election polls in these states should give us pause. Amazingly, however, these Rust Belt numbers among White voters are so good for Biden that he's in a considerably better position than even the final high quality pre-election polling that looked rosy for Clinton in each state.

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma conceded the government has fallen short in implementing its planned social and economic interventions.

After giving details on the resumption of alcohol sales, she defended the continued cigarette ban under Level 3 of the lockdown, saying all measures the government had implemented were difficult, but necessary.

The Fair Trade Independent Tobacco Association served the government with court papers in early May to challenge its decision to retain the ban on the sale of cigarettes and tobacco products under Level 4 of the lockdown.

According to Trade and Industry Minister Ebrahim Patel, the government had met with supermarkets, bottle stores, alcohol producers, taverns and other on-site consumption companies.

Dlamini-Zuma said under Level 3, local governments would operate close to full operation, while all public servants would be required to return to work, with the exception of those who have permission not to.

James believes that the National Football League still owes Kaepernick an apology.

“As far as the NFL, I’m not in those locker rooms, I’m not with those guys, but I do understand that I have not heard a true, official apology to Colin Kaepernick on what he was going through and what he was trying to tell the NFL and tell the world about why he was kneeling when he was doing that as a San Francisco 49er,” James said.

So I’m looking forward to the season getting restarted, getting back in a Laker uniform and continuing to push the envelope not only on the court, but off the court,” James said of the NBA season restarting.

People appear to be finally listening, and the NFL even went as far as to admit they were wrong in siding with Trump about the protesting of the anthem.

However, they still haven’t mentioned Kaepernick by name or issued an apology.

The Beitbridge border was chaotic on Monday, 4 January as hundreds of people tried to make their way into South Africa following an announcement that Zimbabwe would be placed back onto Level 4 lockdown for 30 days due to a surge in Covid-19 cases. The lockdown includes a 6pm to 6am curfew. Zimbabweans hoping to escape the Level 4 lockdown announced by the government found themselves cheek by jowl with hundreds of their countrymen at the Beitbridge border into South Africa. Some have been queuing since Sunday, 3 January while the numbers kept swelling. By Sunday, Zimbabwe had recorded over 14,000 cases of coronavirus infections and nearly 370 deaths. It was these numbers that prompted Zimbabwe’s acting president Kembo Mohadi to announce the lockdown, which sent his countrymen fleeing. President Emmerson Mnangagwa is on a month’s leave. Health and Child Care Minister Constantino Chiwenga was reportedly also concerned by the spike in cases due to the country’s severely under-resourced hospitals and clinics. Daily Maverick arrived at the border on Monday morning, days after South Africa’s Minister of Home Affairs, Aaron Motsoaledi had visited to assess port control officials’ readiness for the expected influx of people following the announcement. Motsoaledi said more than 500 undocumented Zimbabweans are arrested each day at the border for trying to enter SA illegally. On Monday, fake Covid-19 certificates and border jumpers were some of the issues officials faced at the gate as they battled to contain the crowd. Officials from SA’s Department of Health reported 17 incidents of fake certificates on Saturday, 2 January and an immigration official said most of the fake certificates had come from people travelling by bus. Home Affairs spokesperson Siya Qoza said, “If you come into the country with fake documents you will immediately be deported. That is the decision that the minister [Motsoaledi[ took and it has been communicated to everyone. People who are here [at the border], who either have expired [Covid-19] tests or do not have any tests at all, will get assisted through on-site testing.” South African officials prioritised health checks, which slowed the movement of people through port control. A facility was set up for those not in possession of a Covid test result where they could get tested before proceeding to passport control. Concern was raised by officials after an elderly man who tested positive for Covid-19 breached several checkpoints and made his way to passport control. He was found in possession of a medical certificate declaring him positive and arrangements were made for him to be deported. Three women sat in a police van after being caught illegally entering SA. Two of the women admitted to an immigration official that they had crossed the Limpopo River, while the third, who passed through port control, could not explain why her passport was not stamped.2 On allegations of corruption at the border, director for port control, Stephen van Neel said, “Corruption will be found in all government department

Venus Ebony Starr Williams is an American tennis star with 22 Grand Slam titles (7 Singles, 13 Doubles, 2 Mixed Doubles) and 4 Olympic Gold Medals and is known as one of the best players of her generation. She is the elder sister of Serena Williams who holds 33 Grand Slam titles to her name. Williams was born on June 17, 1980 to Richard Williams and Oracene Price in Lynwood, California. Richard Williams was a farmer in Louisiana who was an avid tennis fan and wanted to see his daughters succeed as professional tennis players. He bought instructional tapes and books to learn tennis, so him and his wife could teach their daughters how to play. The sisters first started training at the run down tennis courts near their house and then attended Rick Macci’s tennis academy. Later, Richard took over the girls’ coaching entirely.

Venus started competing in junior tennis tournaments where she held a 63-0 win-lose record on the United States Tennis Association junior tour. She was ranked the No. 1 player in the under 12 category but Richard pulled her out of competitions so she could focus on her studies and not feel the pressure of having to win. Venus turned pro on October 31, 1994, at the age of fourteen due to the then relaxed rules of the WTA allowing younger girls to turn pro. However, she participated in limited competitions and focused on her school work side by side. As she steadily started participating in more tournaments, her ranking rose to the top 100 in the world for the first time in April 1997, and she finished the year ranked World No. 22. The sisters first played each other professionally in the second round of the Australian Open in 1998; Venus won the encounter but lost in the quarterfinals to then World No. 3 Lindsay Davenport. A few weeks later, she won the first singles title of her career – the IGA Tennis Classic in Oklahoma City in which she defeated Davenport in the semifinal and Joannette Kruger in the final.

Venus’s first singles Grand Slam victory came in Wimbledon 2000, where she defeated

5. Deal or no deal?:

By Tuesday, according to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, we should know whether Congress and the White House will find a way to make a deal before the election on a coronavirus stimulus package.

\"While there was some encouraging news, much work remains,\" Pelosi said in a letter sent to her colleagues on Sunday afternoon. \"I am optimistic that we can reach agreement before the election. To that end, we are writing language as we negotiate the priorities, so that we are fully prepared to move forward once we reach agreement.\"

The nut of the issue appears to be the size of the bill -- particularly as it relates to funding for testing (and other Covid-19-related issues) for minority communities.

The White House offered a $1.8 trillion bill last week which Pelosi quickly rejected. (Some Democratic Party leaders -- including 2020 presidential candidate Andrew Yang -- have suggested Pelosi needs to cut a deal for the good of the country.)

And while she seems open to the idea of a deal generally, other parts of Pelosi's letter are, um, less encouraging.

\"The White House had assured Democrats that they would accept our language on testing with a 'light touch,'\" she wrote. \"Unfortunately, as the committees of jurisdiction review the White House's language provision-by-provision, it has become clear that these changes are not a light touch but instead, a deep dive.\"

The clock is ticking. 48 hours and counting.

4.  A down-ballot disaster:

Yes, President Donald Trump looks like he is going to lose the presidential race to former Vice President Joe Biden. But it now increasingly looks like his unpopularity with the electorate could also cost his party the Senate and drive them even further into the House minority.

Inside Elections, a non-partisan handicapping tip sheet run by Nathan Gonzales, a CNN contributor, revised its seat projections in the Senate and the House in Democrats' favor.

Gonzales is now predicting a four- to six-seat Democratic gain in the Senate, which, if it comes to pass, means that Democrats will win the Senate majority whether Biden wins the White House or not.

On the House side, Gonzales now says Democrats are likely to gain between 10 and 20 seats, which could well double their current majority. (Republicans need a net gain of 17 seats to win the House majority, which is, well, not happening.)

If Inside Elections is right, Democrats would have full control over Washington that they haven't enjoyed since the first two years of Barack Obama's first term.

What that would mean is, effectively, an undoing of the last four years of Trump's presidency -- whether on health care, the environment, the tax code or the overall regulatory process in the nation's capital.

Side note: Keep an eye WAY down-ballot on the battle for state legislative control. This will be the last election before the country redraws its state legislative and House district lines in the wake of the 2020 Census. Which party controls the majority controls the line-drawing software in many of these states.

Members of the Fulani tribe have targeted and killed 28 Christian villagers in north-central Nigeria as attacks in the region continue to escalate.

“Fulani gunmen were shooting sporadically and shouting, ‘We are looking for those alive to kill’,” said Amos Samuel, a 35-year local farmer in Gonan Rogo, a village in Kaduna state.

The Fulani, a group of about 7 million people, are widely viewed as the largest semi-nomadic tribe of traditional herders in the world and are the home tribe of Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari.

For years, the Fulani and Hausa, the largest tribe in Nigeria of 25 million people and established farmers, have fought over land use and water.

“The Buhari Administration’s response to repeated attacks upon Christian farmers in the Middle Belt by Fulani herdsmen ranges from indifference to active acquiescence.

Jamaican teacher’s claims of racial discrimination in China said to be unfounded

(Jamaica Observer) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade today responded to allegations that the Jamaican Embassy in China did not provide assistance to a Jamaican teacher who requested help.

There have been no reports made by nationals (including Jamaican teachers) to the embassy regarding mistreatment, although fears generally exist in light of media reports.

The embassy, with the assistance of the teacher’s former employer, sought to find accommodation for the teacher so that he could vacate the apartment that was initially assigned under his contract.

Investigations conducted by the embassy into allegations made by the teacher, revealed that his eviction from the accommodation owned by his former employer was unrelated to claims of racial discrimination.

Through the intervention of the embassy, the teacher received his salaries owed by the former employer.
