The Story of Martin Luther King by Kid President

Nationwide protests have taken place since October 7 despite the disbanding of the controversial Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) police unit.

The demonstrators have been accused of attacking police stations and personnel.

The rallies which are mostly attended by young people have become avenues to vent against corruption and unemployment.

Rights groups say at least 15 people have been killed the demonstrations began in early October.

Tens of millions of people in Africa could become destitute as a result of COVID-19 and its catastrophic impact on fragile economies and health systems across the continent, human rights chiefs from the United Nations and the African Commission warned on Wednesday.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet, and Chairperson of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights, Solomon Dersso, issued a joint call for urgent measures to mitigate the ripple effects of COVID-19 on the most vulnerable.

Poverty, lack of social protection, limited access to water, poor sanitation infrastructure, pre-existing disease burden, conflict and overstretched health systems, have created heightened risk for spreading the disease.

Ms. Bachelet and Mr. Dersso called for equitable access to COVID-19 diagnostics, therapeutics and vaccines, urging creditors of African countries to freeze, restructure or relieve debt.

\"It is a matter of human rights necessity that there must be international solidarity with the people of Africa and African Governments,\" they said.

Guinea's main opposition candidate Cellou Dalein Diallo arrived in the capital Conakry on Thursday ahead of this weekend's election, greeted by hordes of animated supporters.

The city had earlier resounded to the sound of car horns as supporters of President Alpha Conde, who is seeking a controversial third term on Sunday, whisked through the city in a motorcade.

After about a week of combative campaigning, the 82-year-old president himself returned to the capital on Wednesday amid heightened political tension in the West African state.

Conde's re-election bid comes after he pushed through a constitutional referendum in March, which he argued would modernise the country, but which allowed him to bypass a two-term limit for presidents.

Opposition to this triggered mass protests from last October, sparking a massive crackdown by security forces and claiming dozens of lives.

Rights groups are increasingly critical of Conde, whom they say is veering towards authoritarianism.

Diallo's motorcade proceeded through streets thronged with supporters wearing the green and white colours of his party Thursday, while a swarm of motorbike riders driving ahead of the opposition leader slalomed between the supporters.

\"We're tired, we want change,\" said unemployed mechanic Balde Mamadou Oury, 35.

Twelve candidates are contesting Sunday's election in total. However most think only Conde and Diallo are serious contenders.

After decades as an opposition activist, Conde became Guinea's first democratically-elected president in 2010 and won re-election in 2015.

Diallo, 68, now Guinea's leading opposition politician, was formerly a prime minister under authoritarian leader Lansana Conte.

After months of tension between the pair, Guineans interviewed by AFP expressed fears of potential violence on election day and the period that follows.

Clashes between Conde and Diallo supporters have wounded several people in different parts of the country in recent days.

'Hate speech'

Kabinet Fofana, a Guinean political scientist, warned there was a danger one of the candidates would not accept the outcome of the election.

\"A major difficulty is the question of recognition, acceptance of the results of the ballot boxes,\" he said.

The outcome of Guinea's poll is likely to resonate further afield too, kicking off a string of elections this year across West Africa.

Activists are concerned that a win for Conde would bode ill for democratic norms in the region.

Aside from the third presidential term, Guinea's election campaign has been marked by fears of increased ethnic tensions in the diverse country.

For example, Conde - who normally speaks French when addressing the nation - last month told voters in the Malinke language that backing an opposition Malinke candidate amounted to voting for Diallo.

Politics in Guinea are mostly drawn along ethnic lines. President Conde's party is largely backed by Malinke people, and Diallo's UFDG by Fulani people, although both insist that they are pluralist.

HOUSTON – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee has always been a hands-on leader for the people of Houston, but these days, she can be seen front and center at community events and press conferences, leading the charge in demanding more testing in the fight against COVID-19.

ZIMBABWEAN born-Canadian actress, writer and producer Natasha “Tash” Heschelle is back on the screen with her first big production titled Zahara The Return currently streaming on Amazon Prime Videos United Kingdom and United States and at several film festivals.

Tash told NewsDay Life & Style yesterday that she had been rejected so many times, but the series produced under her Heschélle entertainment company gave her a breakthrough.

“Zahara The Return is also screening at several film festivals including the biggest web series festival in Canada called Toronto Webfest, and Gold Movie Awards in the UK where we won three awards.”

Tash said they had received some good reviews, adding that the production would be available worldwide after the world premiere at SXSW festival in the US although this was still uncertain due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Tash appeared in several short films, and did several commercials for different companies.

RAYON Sports have started negotiations with Skol Brewery for a bigger sponsorship package starting with the 2020/2021 season.

Since January this year, Rayon Sports management, led by its president Sadate Munyakazi, has been advocating for a bigger sponsorship package or else the club terminate the current deal - which runs until the end of the 2021/2022 season - in favour of a new sponsor.

The negotiations had stalled due to the Covid-19 lockdown, but quickly picked up last week after Rayon were reportedly in talks with Bralirwa, another brewer and Skol's main competitors.

Bralirwa, who are also in talks with Rwanda Football Association (Ferwafa) about a possibility to sponsor the topflight league - at a reported tune of Rwf450 million per year, were offering Rayon a Rwf90 million per season deal.

On behalf of Rayon, the talks with Skol are handled by the Advisory Committee - composed of the club's former president - after Munyakazi was a fortnight ago banned from all football activities for six months.

Dar es Salaam — Tanzania expects tourists from at least four countries to start arriving in the country anytime from this month to July, the Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) announced yesterday.

TTB managing director Devota Mdachi said yesterday they have been in talks with a number of countries especially those that have witnessed a decline in Covid-19 infections and that the countries have shown intention of bringing tourists into the country.

TTB chairman Judge (rtd) Thomas Mihayo said following the Covid-19 outbreak, the board came up with long and short term strategies that saw the country continue with promotion of its tourist attractions.

WHILE it is a cause for concern that a lot of returning Zimbabweans have escaped from quarantine centres, it is critical to strike a balance between making sure that their rights are protected as well as the need to ensure that the potential spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) is halted.

Understandably, quarantine centres cannot be expected to offer five-star treatment to these returning citizens, but it is also important to ensure they have access to just the basic amenities of life.

It is also critical to ensure that returnees are tested for COVID-19 quickly so that they do not stay unnecessarily long in the quarantine centres when the government is already over-stretched and cannot adequately cater for them.

There is no reason why quarantine centres should be some form of prison where the rights of returning citizens are limited.

Taking into consideration the fact that some of the returning citizens might not be positive of COVID-19, what protective measures have been put in place at these centres to ensure that they are not infected while they are in quarantine when they would have returned to the country free of the virus?

INFORMAL traders have defied President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s lockdown regulations and are now back in full force, operating openly in the high-density areas at a time the country is recording a surge in coronavirus cases.

Government recently partly eased a one-and-half-month-long COVID-19 lockdown to “restart certain sectors of the economy,” but kept the informal sector under lockdown.

Government had promised $200 to the vulnerable, including those in the informal sector, to cushion them from the effects of the national lockdown which has gone for over two months.

The COVID-19 outbreak might get out of control following the relaxing of lockdown measures, which has seen large-scale movement of people in and around Harare.

Meanwhile, Bulawayo City Council said it will descend on illegal vendors who are causing congestion in the central business district in violation of the COVID-19 lockdown order

Mayor Solomon Mguni made the remarks early this week while receiving 20 beds and personal protective equipment from Ezra Sibanda and Friends Initiative on behalf of the Thorngrove Isolation Centre.

MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa’s bid to bar the Thokozani Khupe-led MDC-T from further recalling his legislators from Parliament hit a brickwall yesterday after High Court judge Justice Tawanda Chitapi ruled that the youthful opposition leader was improperly before the courts as his party was not a juristic person capable of suing or being sued.

Chamisa had approached the court seeking to bar MDC-T secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora from recalling his MPs after the latter recently recalled four MDC Alliance legislators for ceasing to represent the interests of the original party, MDC-T.

In recalling them, Khupe argued that the MDC Alliance was not a party, but an umbrella body for a group of opposition political parties.

The judge noted an earlier judgment fellow High Court judge Munangati Manongwa who last week ruled that the MDC Alliance was a political party and a legal person who could sue or be sued.

Khupe’s lawyer Lovemore Madhuku said the ruling allowed his client to go ahead and recall more MDC Alliance MPs and councillors because the interdict which Chamisa’s party sought had been quashed.
