Nationwide protests have taken place since October 7 despite the disbanding of the controversial Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) police unit.

The demonstrators have been accused of attacking police stations and personnel.

The rallies which are mostly attended by young people have become avenues to vent against corruption and unemployment.

Rights groups say at least 15 people have been killed the demonstrations began in early October.

In a rare legal victory for the MDC Alliance, the High Court has ruled in favour of the two of the party’s legislators, who had approached the court seeking an order barring the Thokozani Khupe-led MDC-T and the House of Assembly Speaker Jacob Mudenda from replacing them as lawmakers after they were recalled on April 3, this year.

The two legislators, Lillian Timveos and Tabitha Khumalo, sought the intervention of the courts after reinstated MDC-T secretary general Douglas Mwonzora said the Khupe-led camp had a right to recall and replace the legislators following the nullification of Nelson Chamisa’s presidency by the Supreme Court.

“The court has granted an interdict to stop the Douglas Mwonzora and the Thokozani Khupe-led group from replacing those recalled members that is Khumalo and Timveos,” Kwaramba said.

In his founding affidavit Mwonzora had argued that the Khupe-led camp had a right to replace the two recalled MPs because they had publicly stated that they were no longer members of the MDC-T, a party they belonged to at the time of elections.

In April this year, the Supreme Court ordered the party to return to its 2014 structures and hold an extraordinary congress to select a new leadership prompting the Khupe-led faction to recall Timveos and Khumalo.

Amy Cooper is continuing to feel the backlash after she called the cops on Christian Cooper (no relation) in Central Park on Memorial Day.

Christian’s name catapulted to the national spotlight after the Central Park incident where Christian told Amy that her dog should be on a leash in an area that was popular for birdwatching.

According to GAY USA, Cooper was a co-chair of the board of directors of the Gay Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) in the late ’80s, “at a time when GLAAD was still a grass-roots, New York-based group organizing protest rallies against anti-gay violence, actions against the New York Post for its homophobic coverage, and television appearances to correct misleading programming about LGBT lives.”

Christian also put in work on the governing level when he organized the political action committee (PAC) No More REPublicans Toying with Your Life (No More REPTYLs) in response to the continued suppression of basic LGBTQ legislation in New York State by the Republican majority in the state’s senate.

Name at birth: Hakeem Seriki

Chamillionaire is the stage name of Hakeem Seriki, a Texas rapper who rocketed to stardom in 2006 with the singles Turn It Up and Ridin. Seriki got his start in the late 1990s, doing freestyle rap for SwishaHouse Records in Houston. He and rapper Paul Wall, a childhood friend, sold mixed tapes and CDs of themselves rapping over tracks that had been chopped and screwed (sonically manipulated down-tempo beats). Chamillionaire (a play on chameleon thats pronounced KAmillionaire) made a name for himself in Texas as the Mixtape Messiah, and a self-distributed 2002 release, Get Ya Mind Correct sold more than 100,000 copies and got nationwide attention as one of the years best underground hip-hop records. After several self-released records, Chamillionaire joined Universal Records and released The Sound of Revenge in late 2005. A high profile on MTV and hit singles soon followed and by the end of 2006 Chamillionaire was a star. His other albums include Ultimate Victory (2007), Mistape Messiah 6 (2009) and Venom (2010).

Seriki’s father was a Muslim and his mother was a Christian; they separated when he was a boy… He joined Ciara for “Get Up,” the hit song from the movie Step Up (2006 starring Channing Tatum)… The Weird Al Yankovic song “White & Nerdy” is a parody of Chamillionaire’s “Ridin’.”

Malaysian immigration authorities raided apartment buildings in Petaling Jaya Old Town on Wednesday morning, arresting about 200 people who had emigrated to the southeast Asian country.

All 200 arrestees were tested for COVID-19, according to Immigration Department director-general Datuk Khairul Dzaimee Daud.

Some Malaysians particularly oppose the presence of Rohingya refugees in their country, fearing they might bring COVID-19 when they emigrate.

Petaling Jaya Old Town’s quarantine, ordered when 26 COVID-19 cases were confirmed there, will be lifted Thursday morning.

Every day in America a Black man, woman or child becomes a victim of police brutality and misconduct!

When a few people throw rocks at a purported enemy that has weapons of mass destruction like automatic rifles, tanks, helicopters, water cannons, dogs, tear gas, pepper spray, mace and metal batons, the rock throwers may get shot but more importantly, their actions put the innocent, law abiding, peaceful and non-violent protesters into harm’s way when police react and respond.

Also, the people that can change policies, procedures, actions and the behavior of bad cops, will not be in the burned buildings and cars, they will not be in the damaged Black owned businesses and they will not even be in the distressed and disturbed communities where the alleged police misconduct and state sponsored murder took place.

About 4,000 previously registered youth and young adults, ages 14-21, will have the opportunity to participate in a virtual work and educational experience gaining job readiness, career exploration, academic enrichment, and essential skills training.

Jason Perkins-Cohen, Director of the Mayor’s Office of Employment Development, said that a number of cities across the country have eliminated their summer jobs programs in the face of declining revenues due to COVID-19.

The Mayor’s Office of Employment Development partnered with workforce and educational partners to develop a virtual program where up to 100 employers will provide remote work experiences using their established platforms.

YouthWorks participants will learn job readiness skills, career exploration, and educational enrichment through an established web-based platform providing workforce skills, assessments and assignments geared toward their age group.

Job coaches will be hired to guide these YouthWorkers through their summer experience and support them to properly navigate the online tools and complete the work that is required.

While black people make up only about 13% of the United States’ population according to the U.S. Census Bureau, they account for 22% of COVID-19 deaths so far, according to the COVID Tracking Project (white people, who make up 77% of the U.S. population, account for only 47% of deaths).

The disparities are even more stark in some specific states and cities where black people make up the largest share of the population.

Forty-six states and Washington, D.C. report race data in confirmed COVID-19 cases, while only 41 report race for virus-related deaths.

Moreover, some states aren’t reporting race data for coronavirus cases at all—including Louisiana, home to the U.S.’ third-largest black population.

Still, with black people accounting for an outsized number of COVID-19 deaths in 34 states, it’s a signal that can’t be ignored.

THE feud within the MDC family is a result of the perception by the Supreme Court that processes made to appoint people into positions, from the appointments of Nelson Chamisa and Elias Mudzuri as deputy presidents and that of Chamisa first as acting president and then as president were made ultra vires the MDC-T constitution.

The two things that the court order required Thokozani Khupe as acting MDC president to stick to were the instruction to convene the extraordinary congress and to observe the constitution as it relates to the holding of a congress.

The recall of MDC Alliance parliamentarians, the purported expulsion and the nicodemus holding of WhatsApp council meetings to which those who you do not see eye to eye with from the MDC-T 2014 were not invited, the nocturnal invasion and capture of Harvest House using the police and the army are all acts that are not in line with the Supreme Court ruling and evidence of your failure to adhere to constitutionalism and democratic values which you claim to uphold.

As said before, this Supreme Court judgment is only implementable with the full co-operation of all stakeholders, but your move to eject some people from the 2014 structures from the offices through your action of last Friday is a big demonstration to the Supreme Court that you and the faction of the MDC-T you lead have some other motives than implementing the court ruling.

I will not go into the details about the right to use Harvest House or the eviction processes that had to be followed if your faction had rights over other members of the 2014 MDC-T structures, but there are people, for instance, like the 2014 women assembly chairperson Lynette Karenyi-Kore who by virtue of her position is still one of the people who are supposed to be part of the extraordinary congress preparation.

Burundi's longtime President Pierre Nkurunziza has congratulated the governing party's hand-picked successor on a \"large victory\" in the country's presidential election, though the main opposition has pledged to contest the result in court.

The election commission on Monday declared Evariste Ndayishimiye, a former army general chosen by the CNDD-FDD party as heir to Nkurunziza, the winner of the May 20 poll with 68.72 percent vote.

\"I warmly congratulate the President-elect General Major Evariste Ndayishimiye for his large victory which confirms that the great majority of Burundians adhere to the projects and the values he embodies,\" Nkurunziza, who chose not to run after 15 years in power, posted on Twitter.

On May 8, 12 days to the polls and before the scheduled arrival of an East African Community mission to the country, the government said the regional bloc's observers would have to be in quarantine for 14 days, effectively ruling them out of the election process.

Nkurunziza was this year elevated by Burundi's parliament to the rank of \"supreme guide for patriotism\" and he will continue to be chairman of the governing party's powerful council of elders.

The year 2020 witnessed the event being celebrated not only in the background of climate change impacts, but also in the midst of COVID-19, a deadly pandemic that has caused massive human casualties around the world.

It affects every aspect of human health, providing clean air, water, nutritious foods, scientific understanding and medicinal sources, natural disease resistance and climate change mitigation.

With a wide range of ecosystems, plant and animal species being threatened by climate change, human beings, who are supposed to be environmental stewards, are threatened by the COVID-19 scourge.

During these dire situations, while human beings are urged to be climate conscious, they are also supposed to be human conscious as well, with regard to their well-being in the background of the coronavirus.

As the nations around the world are urged to guard against biodiversity losses with severe implications on human well-being, collapse of the food and health systems, culminating into global food insecurity and health scares as in the case of the coronavirus.

Collectively, we need to provide extra support to protect those experiencing domestic violence through specializing training of first responders, additional emergency shelters for survivors, immediate removal of abusers, and increased support for helplines.

While the current economic downturn is affecting both men and women, past evidence shows that domestic violence against women increases during periods of high unemployment.

According to the Iraq Family Health survey, 1 in 5 Iraqi women are subjected to domestic violence.

As in many other countries, COVID-19 has exacerbated instances of domestic violence in Iraq, with an average increase of 30% since the country-wide curfew began, and some regions seeing an increase as high as 50%.

For survivors of violence and women displaced in Iraq and globally, the consequences of COVID-19 lockdowns often mean limited access to life saving services.

A year after billionaire Robert F. Smith vowed to eliminate the student loan debt for Morehouse College’s entire 2019 graduating class, other Black business leaders are following suit.

Frank Baker, founder and managing partner of the private equity company Siris, and his wife interior designer Laura Day Baker recently announced the creation of a $1 million scholarship fund for Spelman College graduates.

The fund that the couple started will cover the spring tuition and other expenses for nearly 50 students who are a part of Spelman’s 2020 graduating class and other graduates over the next three years.

According to a study released by the United Negro College Fund, students who attend HBCUs graduate with more debt than students from other colleges and universities throughout the country.

Burundi is kicking out the World Health Organization’s top official in the country just days before the presidential election and after the WHO raised concerns about crowded political rallies.

The WHO Africa regional chief, Matshidiso Moeti, described Mulombo as an “extremely competent person” and said the WHO was communicating with Burundi “to clarify and understand the reasoning for the decision they have taken.”

The day that election campaigning in Burundi began late last month, images circulated online of crowded political rallies with President Pierre Nkurunziza in attendance.

The Africa CDC chief, John Nkengasong, on Thursday called Burundi’s action “unfortunate” and said any differences should be addressed by dialogue instead of actions that affect the pandemic response,

\t“We don’t have the luxury of kicking out the WHO,” he told reporters.

Since Magufuli was elected in 2015, Lissu has made it his job to fearlessly challenge the autocratic leader - and more than a dozen bullet wounds were not enough to shut him up.

Almost three years ago, Lissu, the former president of the Tanganyika Law Society (TLS), was en route to his home in Tanzania's capital Dodoma at around 11am for a lunch break during a parliamentary session.

The changes to Tanzanian society were \"immediate\" following Magufuli's election win almost five years ago, Lissu says.

According to Lissu, Magufuli, quite simply, needs the money to implement dozens of national megaprojects he has spearheaded, while Magufuli's fledgling attempts at revamping Air Tanzania, the country's flag carrier, have alone cost hundreds of millions of dollars.

What's unique under Magufuli, according to Lissu, is that the arrests are being made solely for criticising the president.

Our team has conclusively demonstrated that Hippocampus nalu is physically and genetically distinct from the seven known species of pygmy seahorses.

Pygmy seahorses can also provide an important boost for tourism: scuba divers love these small species and are willing to travel far and wide for a chance to see them.

Tracking the seahorse

Dr Louw Claassens and Dr Dave Harasti arrived in Sodwana in early 2018 looking for an entirely different animal: a seahorse-like species called a pygmy pipehorse.

South Africa is home to four other seahorse species, but this was the first time a pygmy seahorse had been observed in South Africa, let alone Africa.

Through combined team efforts, we confirmed that the Sodwana pygmy seahorse was a new species and could give it an official scientific name.
