Atkinson tears through Windies batsmen on debut for England - Trinidad and Tobago Newsday

Fast bowler Gus Atkinson had a dream debut, finishing with a seven-wicket haul to put England in a commanding position at the end of day one of the first Test match against West Indies at Lord's on July 10.

Atkinson ended with figures of 7/45 in 12 overs as West Indies were bundled out for 121 in their first innings inside two sessions. Another debutant in Mickyle Louis showed some quality for West Indies with a top score of 27 off 58 balls opening the batting. He struck four fours and one six.

After the fall of Louis with the score on 44, West Indies progressed to 88/3 with Kavem Hodge and Alick Athanaze at the crease. Any chance of a competitive total was erased by Atkinson, who grabbed three wickets in one over. He removed Athanaze for 23 and the pair of Jason Holder and Joshua Da Silva without troubling the scorers.

Alzarri Joseph (17) and Gudakesh Motie (14 not out) played cameos, but West Indies could only post a modest total.

England, despite their innings being interrupted by bad light, already have a 68-run lead as they closed on 189/3.

Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope were not shy at the crease finding the boundary regularly. Crawley cracked 76 off 89 balls with 14 fours and Pope belted 11 fours in his innings of 57 off 74 deliveries.

Pacer Jayden Seales, who played for Sussex in the County Championship in England this year, snatched 2/31 in nine overs for West Indies. Fast bowler Shamar Joseph, who took a seven-wicket haul to lead West Indies to a famous win over Australia in January, is wicketless in his nine overs.

Day two of the first Test bowls off at 6 am TT time on June 11.

Summarised Scores:

WEST INDIES 121 (Mikyle Louis 27, Kavem Hodge 24; Gus Atkinson 7/45) vs ENGLAND 189/3 (Zak Crawley 76, Ollie Pope 57; Jayden Seales 2/31).
