Malawi Defence Force (MDF) Commander, General Paul Valentino Phiri, has instructed soldiers to remain on high alert to thwart any security threats that could compromise the September 16, 2025 elections on.
Phiri warned MDF soldiers to avoid being used by politicians and to serve only the interests of Malawians while upholding the law.
He was speaking at this year’s Inter-Unit Cross Country Competition, which was held at Mzuzu Golf Course.
This annual event brings together leaders and regular personnel from all the barracks and units across the country.
The MDF commander said the force has collaborated with the Malawi Police Service (MPS) and pledged that they would not stand by and allow “unpatriotic Malawians” to instil fear in the population before, during and after the elections.
“Soldiers must recognise that the country’s security is in their hands. They should not compromise their professionalism by allowing themselves to be used by politicians.
“We have a critical role in ensuring the country’s security is guaranteed. Let us remain alert at all times and ensure that Malawians are safe throughout the election period,” Phiri said.
He also encouraged the soldiers to maintain physical fitness, including through regular exercise.
Phiri warned that soldiers with physical shortcomings would be given a period to improve their fitness or face unspecified action.
Moses MkandawireSocial commentator Moses Mkandawire commended MDF for their assurance of security for Malawians but advised the commander to remain loyal to the republic.
Mkandawire said that MDF soldiers should always ensure they perform their duties in line with the Constitution to uphold their reputation.
“We would be surprised if we saw MDF showing loyalty to individuals. We expect them to serve Malawians properly without breaking the laws of the people,” Mkandawire said.
The country has experienced sporadic political violence since last year, a development which some electoral stakeholders believe could negatively impact the election results.
Last week, MDF and MPS issued a joint statement in which they strongly warned citizens to desist from being used by “some political parties, CSOs and individuals in acts of political violence”.
“MDF and police assure Malawians that they are taking all necessary measures to curb political violence to ensure maximum protection of citizens and their property,” the joint statement, signed by Phiri and Police Inspector General Merlyn Yolamu, said.
They also condemned unnamed political parties, CSOs and individuals for allegedly inciting violence which has resulted in “breach of security, civil unrest and violation of human rights thereby compromising national security”.
