To some, they're a flying nuisance but pigeons are a big business in Senegal.
From his roof in a suburb of the capital Dakar, shopkeeper and pigeon racer Moustapha Gueye releases dozens of birds from the loft, who quickly fly out of sight.
\"Here it's a factory, I'm creating athletes,\" he says.
He takes care of his winged friends every morning by training them and developing crossbreeds suitable for flying in hot weather.
\"It is a sport created by Europeans, it was imported here. We discovered pigeon racing through the internet. But before we use to be pigeon breeders only,\" Gueye says.
Though more popular across the continent, it is a growing sport in the West African country.
Today, there are some 350 pigeon racing enthusiasts in Senegal, who spend a lot of money. A pigeon can cost over 800 US dollars in the country.
\"Currently I'm doing business with pigeons. I've earned several million CFA francs selling pigeons, I even bought a car through those pigeons,\" he says.
\"But the most important thing for me is the passion.
\"It's exciting to have pigeons, when you start participating in races, releasing a pigeon 400 km from its loft and it comes back, that's something you can't explain, it's great!\"
Taking flight
Pigeon racing has clearly taken flight in Senegal and continues to spread its wings.
Senegalese pigeon-racing enthusiasts are keen to turn others on to the sport, and some hope to ultimately turn professional.
But breeder and pigeon racer Oumar Johnson says some people take their dedication too far.
\"When you're too busy with pigeons, things risk going badly,\" he says, adding that the pigeon-fanciers' federation is considering less time-consuming races for youngsters.
Young people are nonetheless the future of the sport, Johnson says, adding that their devotion will make Senegal \"one of the greatest pigeon-racing nations\" one day.
\"In Europe, you have to motivate young people to get involved,\" he says.
\"Here, young people are rushing into it.\"

The Most Famous Oysters in Morocco
Oualidia, famous for its lagoon where shellfish are farmed, it is known as the oyster capital of Morocco. Local producers have been cultivating oysters in the area since the 1950s and people from all over pass through the city just to get a taste of their reputably unique flavour.
Chaib gushes, \"It's impossible to come to Oualidia without eating oysters, there are several people who come here for example every two weeks only to eat oysters.\" Abdelaali shares the same sentiment, “The taste of Oualidia oysters is very special. Even the price is reasonable for all consumers.\"
A Painstaking Production Process
Around 24 tons of six-month-old juvenile old oysters — known as spat, are imported from France each year. They are then placed on breeding tables and undergo an immersion period in the local lagoon for half a year before being sorted according to size, organised onto racks or into bags.
Each rack can hold 200 to 300 small oysters or 120 to 150 larger ones and the shellfish will sit in the water for up to three years before being thoroughly cleaned by way of farm machines.
Afterwhich the oysters further sit in large basins of water from 48 to 96 hours during the necessary filtering stage to further reassure sterility for safe consumption.
Abdeljabbar Hassoune, the head of oyster production at Saidi Oyster Farm, explains how the locally-produced oysters come to have such a unique and now-famous flavour, \"The characteristics of the lagoon that contribute to the quality and special taste of Oualidia oysters compared to other oysters of Morocco, are fresh water, fertile soil and abundant minerals. This gives a special colour and a special and fresh taste of oysters compared to other places.\"
A Thriving Market Both at Home and Abroad
Once the shellfish have undergone all the necessary preparations and are ready for public consumption, they are sent out shipping with around 40 tons exported abroad each year in Morocco and 60 kept for the domestic market. Hassoune outlines the lucrative oyster production business activity, \"We have a market in Moroccan cities, we have local distributors and then we export to Europe, especially to Russia, where we export four to five tons of oysters every month.\"
There are now 17 active farms in Oualidia and Dakhla that employ more than 200 people.
Oualidia produces a yearly 300 tons of oysters generating nearly 740,000 euros.

There’s deep division over the choice of a new transitional executive in Libya, hampering a chance at a successful political dialogue over crisis in the North African nation.
In a videoconference with participants of the Inter-Libyan Political Dialogue Forum, the UN Special Representative, Stephanie Williams laments the lack of time.
Since a ceasefire was signed in October under the auspices of the United Nations, rival parties in Libya returned to the negotiating table. But rooted division is still a major hurdle for stakeholders to overcome.
At a Tunis meeting in Tunisia mid-November, participants at the dialogue agreed to organize national elections on December 24, 2021. But on a condition for a new unified executive for a smooth transition until the elections.
Two rival parties, the UN-backed Government of National Unity (GNA) in Tripoli and eastern commander Khalifa Haftar, are vying for power after Libya was plunged into chaos since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011.
Singapore becomes the first country to grant the U.S. start-up Eat Just Inc. permission to sale lab-grown chicken meat.
The meat is created from cultured chicken cell and will be sold as nuggets. No single chicken was killed to obtain the cell line but instead the technique uses cell isolation method that also includes a biopsy from a live animal.
The cells are later cultured and transferred into a bioreactor, fed with a proprietary mix of proteins, amino acids, minerals, sugars, salts and other nutrients and then harvested after they achieve enough density.
The San Francisco based company described its product as real, high quality meat created directly from animal cells and safe for human consumption.
Singapore’s Food Agency said it had approved the nuggets after Eat Just submitted a safety assessments.
