Nathan Valencia, a 20-year-old junior at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), fought in a Kappa Sigma Fraternity's Charity Fight Night and died four days later after suffering severe injuries to the head from the "underground" match. The main event between Valencia and another student took place at the Sahara Events Center in Las Vegas, with proceeds from the event benefiting a youth boxing club, the Center Ring Boxing. His family explained their loved one agreed to fight for his fraternity, with no prior boxing experience, leaving the ring with fatal brain injuries. Furthermore, the family says he collapsed the following night and was taken to the hospital soon after. According to 8 News Now, Valencia's best friend, Joe Castro, says Valencia had fought in an "underground fight club," explaining that there were no medical professionals or qualified referees at the boxing match.
