THE EDITOR: Not trying to cast aspersions on any one regional corporation or municipal authority, but I cannot help but opine that there are some basic facets of municipal living that are being neglected at this time.
By my estimation there are three things that corporations need to prioritise in the management of public-shared areas such as streets and pavements, parks and recreational grounds, and markets and plazas. These are:
* Cut and maintain grassed areas and tree lines, and clear bush overgrowth.
* Deploy bins at regular intervals and arrange to have them emptied regularly.
* Keep drains and waterways clean and clear.
To get these three seemingly simple items right is reflective of a certain sense of pride in your environment. A sense of pride to be shared both by the members of the corporation and their public.
Failure to do so is to give licence to the reckless among us to litter, vandalise and destroy what should be ours to enjoy collectively.
It is easy to deduce, for example, that the small piles of discarded boxes and drink containers in the area adjacent to the "food court" at the Queen's Park Savannah is a direct result of there not being enough regularly attended to garbage receptacles.
Similarly, the rainy season is here and with it an explosion of green growth that will require more frequent visits from the brush cutters.
Truth be told, we all need to step up and take responsibility for our environment. (There is nothing, for example, stopping us from taking our garbage home with us after an outing to the Savannah.) But to focus just on these three practical areas of service delivery represents an easy win for the corporations that can benefit us all.
Let's all make a habit out of doing better.
