Voters in Seychelles are casting their ballots in the presidential and parliamentary elections spanning three days.

Saturday was the main and last day of voting. The exercise had opened on Thursday for voters on fringe islands and essential workers such as hospital staff in the Indian Ocean island country.

74,600 people are eligible to vote.

Most of the Indian Ocean islands making up the Seychelles, a prized honeymoon destination famed for white beaches and lush vegetation, are uninhabited and the archipelago's 98,000 residents mainly live on the islands of Mahe, Praslin and La Digue.

The opposition is hoping to unseat incumbent president Danny Faure, in power since 2016. Faure was not elected but took over after his boss, James Michel, resigned as president.

Faure is running under the United Seychelles party, which has been in power since 1977.

His main rival is the Anglican priest Wavel Ramkalawan, who is taking his sixth shot at the presidency and lost by only 193 votes to Michel in an unprecedented second round of voting in 2015.

Virus and economy

The main concern of voters is the economic situation in the country, which has suffered the loss of vital tourism -- its main earner -- because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Seychelles has recorded only 149 mostly imported cases, but the virus has been a key campaign issue, with the health minister banning election rallies which would have been a barometer of support for various candidates in a country without a polling institute.

The campaign has mainly happened over social media, where the opposition and its supporters are the most active, and on television where the country held its first ever debates between the candidates, which proved extremely popular.

Since the start of the pandemic, the economy has slowed significantly, with some 700 Seychellois losing their jobs, according to government figures.

And while average income is among the highest in Africa, the national statistics agency says that about 40 percent of Seychellois live in poverty because of the high cost of living.

Another key theme of the campaign has been corruption, a largely taboo topic in the tiny country where business and politics are often intertwined.

Faure was not elected but took over after his boss, James Michel, resigned as president. \n\nFaure is running under the United Seychelles party, which has been in power since 1977. \n\nHis main rival is the Anglican priest Wavel Ramkalawan, who is taking his sixth shot at the presidency and lost by only 193 votes to Michel in an unprecedented second round of voting in 2015. \n\nVirus and economy \n\nThe main concern of voters is the economic situation in the country, which has suffered the loss of vital tourism -- its main earner -- because of the coronavirus pandemic. \n\nThe Seychelles has recorded only 149 mostly imported cases, but the virus has been a key campaign issue, with the health minister banning election rallies which would have been a barometer of support for various candidates in a country without a polling institute. \n\nThe campaign has mainly happened over social media, where the opposition and its supporters are the most active, and on television where the country held its first ever debates between the candidates, which proved extremely popular. \n\nSince the start of the pandemic, the economy has slowed significantly, with some 700 Seychellois losing their jobs, according to government figures. \n\nAnd while average income is among the highest in Africa, the national statistics agency says that about 40 percent of Seychellois live in poverty because of the high cost of living. \n\nAnother key theme of the campaign has been corruption, a largely taboo topic in the tiny country where business and politics are often intertwined.","MaxDetailCharacters":300,"ImageUrl":"https://cdn.blackfacts.com/uploads/blackfacts/facts/2020/10/171c08e1-bce2-4107-a483-bdc3fd87808b.jpg","ImageHeight":538,"ImageWidth":1024,"ImageOrientation":"landscape","HasImage":true,"CssClass":"","Layout":"","Rowspan":1,"Colspan":1,"Likes":0,"Shares":0,"ContentSourceId":"42C8FAC1-E2C7-4A09-8CA5-16C843DEC99E","SourceName":"Africanews | Latest breaking news, daily news and African news from Africa","ContentSourceRootUrl":"https://www.africanews.com","ContentSourceIcon":null,"SponsorId":null,"IsSponsored":false,"SponsorName":null,"SmallSponsorLogoUrl":null,"SponsorUrl":null,"HasSmallSponsorLogo":false,"EffectiveDate":null,"HasEffectiveDate":false,"MonthAbbrevName":null,"FormattedDate":null,"Year":null,"Month":null,"Day":null,"LastUpdatedDate":"2023-11-25T05:14:39.027","LastUpdatedBy":"rssimporter@blackfacts.com","IsEditable":false,"InsertAd":false,"JSONFactData":"{\"date\":\"2020-10-24T09:08:14Z\"}","JsonExtData":{"date":{"ValueKind":3}},"Html":null,"Css":null,"Script":null,"ScriptHash":null,"Id":170126,"FactUId":"31D1A547-9B4A-4428-B3B6-53BE2A31376E","Slug":"seychelles-votes-for-new-president-parliament-africanews","FactType":"News","VirtualSiteSlug":"blackfacts","Title":"Seychelles votes for new president, parliament | Africanews","LocalFactUrl":"/fact/seychelles-votes-for-new-president-parliament-africanews","ResultCount":200,"SearchType":"OmniSearch.RelatedId"},{"FadeSummary":true,"SponsorRedirectUrl":"https://ai.blackfacts.com/redirect/Sponsor/5f236b35-37aa-4a3e-982c-cce80e380610/4647ff3a-13dc-4945-8ea0-a1dd0f170de9/https%3A%2F%2Fwww.imsa.edu","SourceRedirectUrl":"https://ai.blackfacts.com/redirect/ContentSource/8ff085d2-3b61-4a6e-b1da-34c1d2d358fd/4647ff3a-13dc-4945-8ea0-a1dd0f170de9/https%3A%2F%2Fatlantadailyworld.com","DisplayText":"

BY KENNEDY NYAVAYA CONTROVERSIAL dancehall chanter Soul Jah Love has once again confirmed his undying love for ex-wife Bounty Lisa through a yet-to-be released song titled Hatisisiritose if a snippet from the video of the track shared on DKT Family Records Facebook page on Wednesday is anything to go by. In the song that features Humba, Soul Jah Love recounts the misery of losing the love of his life who has since moved on and re-married a secret lover only identified as Paul. They have since been blessed with a baby boy. Bounty Lisa and Soul Jah Love, who had become a celebrity couples, had a nasty break-up as a result of the latter’s supposed violent behaviour and excessive drug abuse. “Munhu wese anoda ku winner hapana anoda ku loser asi apa ndinenge ndaka loser ndangova fuza (Everyone wants to win, no one wants to lose, but on this one I lost and I am going crazy),” he sings in one of the verses. In the same song, Soul Jah Love suggests that the songstress should remove the tattoo inscribed with his name at the height of their love in 2017 while also threatening that theirs will forever be a love triangle as he could not let go of her. “… bvisa tattoo manga mafunga ka two nyangwe muchiti makugara zvenyu muri two, titori three inini handife ndakaita free ndomufunga ginya (… remove the tattoo if you have decided to live together, this will be a love triangle because I will never be free as I always think of you).” This is not the first time, Soul Jah Love has gone public about his intimate feelings for his ex-wife. “We are currently separated, but honestly speaking, I love that woman from the bottom of my heart and I will never love someone else the way I do to her. I may be immoral outside my marital home, but that won’t change the fact that I love her,” he said in a radio interview last year. While Soul Jah Love appears to still have warmth for Bounty Lisa, it could be too late to rekindle the flame with the song coming at a time the songstress appears to have settled with her new man.

Former Malian president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita returned to Bamako on Thursday after more than a month in the United Arab Emirates where he was receiving medical attention.

The west African country he ruled until mid August has new leaders. Keita was deposed by the military after weeeks of civilian protests against his rule.

The junta ruled briefly before appointing former defence minister Bah Ndaw transitional president- under pressure from regional bloc ECOWAS.

Keita's supporters said the 75-year old looked to be in a much better shape.

But even with a new president, Mali's problems remain the same.

The country is still beset by a militant insurgency and an economy in crisis, just as under Keita who retains significant influence.

It is not clear if the former president will try to pursue an active role in Mali's politics again.

Last week, the workers wrote to Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Misheck Sibanda and Home Affairs secretary Aaron Nhepera demanding a review of their working conditions. In a follow-up petition to the management dated October 21, the workers said they were incapacitated. “As the staff members, we write to notify you of our incapacitation from October 21,” the letter read. “Previous correspondences to the head office have not yielded positive results and in some instances have not been replied to. We are left with no other option, but the unfortunate decision to declare incapacitation due to meagre salaries.” The workers said their salaries which average $3 700 were no longer sustainable. “Regrettably, the organisation selectively and intermittently provides supplementary transport assistance to members reporting for duty,” the letter added. “Our plea remains unsolved as the bus fare is not enough given the challenges that Zupco is facing and the current restricted access to the Public Service Commission buses.” NMMZ executive director Godfrey Mahachi yesterday blamed the salary delays to technical issues which he said were being addressed. “The ministry is doing something to rectify the delays and technical issues. We are trying to talk to the workers because this is not the time for them to be doing that. The money is there, it is the process of paying that is taking time but there is no dispute,” he said.
