A 28-year-old Barrackpore man is in hospital and a 30 -year-old Penal man is in police custody after they allegedly attempted to rob a Princes Town business woman on Saturday.
According to a police release, the owner of a supermarket on Edward Street in Princes Town was conducting business when two men, one armed with a gun, entered and announced a robbery.
The men relieved the business owner of cash and tried to escape, but an off-duty police officer who was in the supermarket at the time got into a struggle with one of the suspects.
The gunman shot at the police officer as they made good their escape. The officer returned fire with a licensed firearm, damaging the rear windscreen
Police were alerted to the robbery and later got a report of a man lying unresponsive on the road in Dyers Village, Princes Town. He had apparently been shot. A Nissan Almera with a damaged windscreen was also seen on the side of the road.
Police responded and took the wounded man to the San Fernando General Hospital for treatment. The 30-year-old man was later arrested in relation to the incident.
Investigations are ongoing.
