The Massachusetts Body of Liberties outlaws bond

slavery (a term used interchangeably for chattel slavery

in the British colonies) except in the cases of "just wars"

and "strangers" who are voluntarily or involuntarily

sold into slavery; consequently, Massachusetts becomes

the first US colony to recognize slavery as a legal institution.
