BY TERRY MADYAUTA THE Ngoni Kufa Trust has changed the landscape of rural Sanyati in Mashonaland West province by establishing a top-class tennis centre at Chiguvare Primary School. The United Kingdom-based trust was named after one of Zimbabwes best tennis umpires, Ngoni Kufa. Kufa, who was the first black Zimbabwean umpire to officiate at the Olympics in Barcelona in 1992, passed on in 2013 and his friends in England where he was based, formed the trust to continue his legacy in tennis. They decided to set up a tennis development project at Chiguvare Primary School where the late umpire did party of his primary education. They have completed constructing two tennis courts at the school. They intend to build four in total. Ngoni Kufa Trust spokesperson Kossam Mhangami said they had bigger plans for the school and the surrounding community which they want to empower and help discover the next big tennis star in the country. “The next stage is to empower the leadership at Chiguvare Primary School so that they can take ownership and move the Ngoni Kufa legacy on. We are going to teach them how to fish rather than feeding them continuously, said Mhangami. “Our coaching department is working with Tennis Zimbabwe and local coaches to train teachers especially physical education teachers to teach, train and coach tennis. We also want them to use their tennis facilities to generate income,” he said. The trust also provided computers for the school in addition to the tennis equipment which included balls, rackets and nets. Officials from the trust were scheduled to visit Chiguvare Primary School this month to monitor the work that has been done, but the event had to be postponed to next year due to the effects of coronavirus which include travel restrictions.
