South Africa has recorded 16 726 New coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in the past 24-hours, bringing the total number of cases to 1 073 887. The country has also recorded 418 new COVID-19 related fatalities, pushing the death toll to 28 887 In a statement, Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says most of the new deaths were recorded in the Western Cape. “Regrettably, 418 more COVID-19 related deaths have been reported: Eastern Cape 66, Gauteng 66, KwaZulu-Natal 134, Mpumalanga 6, Free State 8 and Western Cape 138. This brings the total to 28 887.” Recoveries now stand at 887 701, representing a recovery rate of 82,6%. Meanwhile, Mkhize has appealed to all South Africans to help protect healthcare workers against COVID-19, by adhering to the basic safety protocols. Mkhize lit a candle at Durban’s King Edward VIII Hospital on New Year’s Eve to remember the more than 28 000 people who have died from the virus in the country. He paid tribute to health care workers who are going beyond the call of duty as the pandemic is ravaging the country. More than 43 000 healthcare workers have been infected and 438 have died from the virus. “Every time a healthcare worker is infected with COVID-19, we lose at least 10 days of labour so desperately needed at this time. We may lose these precious resources for much longer if they all become ill and need to be treated and isolated longer,” says the Health Minister. A 78-year-old retired police captain was sentenced to life imprisonment in the Sterkspruit Regional Court on Wednesday for raping his then-10-year-old granddaughter more than 18 years ago.
According to a statement by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim, was a 60-year-old police officer stationed in the Free State at the time of the incident.
The case went unreported for 14 years, until 2016, when the victim decided to report it to the police.
\"Advocate Loyiso Methuso, for the State, led the evidence for the victim, now 28 years old, who gave a clear and satisfactory account of the incident, despite the 18-year lapse,\" Tyali said.
\"The court held that the man broke the relationship of trust and failed in his duty to protect the child, as both her grandfather and a police officer.
An Eastern Cape health worker was detained by Frontier Hospital security guards before he was turned over to the police in connection with the theft of PPE.

Sarah Gertrude Millin , née Liebson (born March 19, 1888, Žagarė, Lithuania, Russian Empire—died July 6, 1968, Johannesburg, South Africa), South African writer whose novels deal with the problems of South African life.
Millin’s Russian Jewish parents immigrated to South Africa when she was an infant. She spent her childhood near the diamond fields at Kimberley and the river diggings at Barkly West, whose white, Coloured, and black communities provided the background for much of her writing. Her first novel, The Dark River (1920), was set around Barkly West. Others followed, but it was God’s Step-Children (1924; new ed. 1951)—dealing with the problems of four generations of a half-black, half-white (“Coloured”) family in South Africa—that established her reputation. With Mary Glenn (1925), a study of a mother’s reaction to her child’s disappearance, Millin became one of the most popular South African novelists in English, identified by a nervous, sharp, vivid, often almost staccato style. She also wrote biographies of Cecil Rhodes (1933; new ed. 1952) and General Jan C. Smuts (1936). In a few of her many novels she referred to actual events in South African history—e.g., The Coming of the Lord (1928), about a black “prophet” in the eastern Cape, and King of the Bastards (1949), on the life of the white chieftain Coenraad Buys. Men on a Voyage (1930) is a collection of essays; she also wrote a series of war diaries (1944–48) and two autobiographical books, The Night Is Long (1941) and The Measure of My Days (1955). The country breached the one million mark for Covid-19 tests, with 1 028 399 conducted as of 11 June.
According to a statement by Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, 29 999 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours.
Of the more than one million tests performed to date, 52% were done in public laboratories, while 48% were in the private sector.
Mkhize said a further 74 Covid-19-related deaths have been recorded, bringing the death toll to 1 284, which translated to a mortality rate of 2.2%.
\"We extend our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank healthcare workers who treated the deceased,\" Mkhize said.
South Africa has recorded 139 more Covid-19-related deaths, bringing the recorded death toll to 22 206.
