Paul cuffe (1759-1817).

In 1784, Paul Cuffe was the first black to sail as master of his won ship. Born near Bedford, Massachusetts, Cuffe went to sea at a young age and became involved in the coastwide trade. He later developed trade with Sierra Leone, where he encouraged missionary work and colonization.

His name is sometimes given as Cuffee.
