NFL Owners Table Proposal to Incentivize Hiring of Minority Coaches, GMs, Per Report – Free Press of Jacksonville

Under the proposal, any team that hires a minority head coach would receive a six-slot bump for their subsequent year’s third-round NFL draft pick.

Hiring a minority general manager would move the same pick up 10 slots.

Additional compensatory picks would be awarded to teams that had a minority assistant become a coordinator (fifth-round selection) or head coach/general manager (third-round selection) elsewhere.

The NFL only has four minority head coaches — Mike Tomlin (Pittsburgh Steelers), Anthony Lynn (Los Angeles Chargers), Brian Flores (Miami Dolphins) and Ron Rivera (Washington Redskins)  — along with two minority general managers — Chris Grier (Dolphins) and Andrew Berry (Cleveland Browns).

On Monday, the league moved to expand the Rooney Rule to require teams to interview two external minority candidates for head coaching vacancies and one for general manager roles.
