Since her introduction to Speech Communication circa 1962, Dr. Annjennette Sophie McFarlin, now Professor Emeriti, has gone on to earn a BA (Cal State Long Beach), MA (UCLA) and a PhD in Speech Communication. In 1975 she became the first black American to receive a Doctorate in Rhetorical Studies from Washington State University. She was the second African American woman to receive a Doctorate in any subject matter from WSU. She wrote Black Reconstruction Orators and Their Orations: 1865-1875 and has published many articles in scholarly journals. McFarlin was the founder and President of Black Storytellers of San Diego, Inc. Dr. Annjennette Sophie McFarlin died on November 26, 2013.
