The Government agency responsible for all dogs in Barbados has reported an increase in the number of those animals being abandoned, but also a spike in owners registering their canines.Head of the Animal Control Centre Allison Caddle disclosed that about 160 dogs were abandoned on a monthly basis. And she has urged pet owners who no longer want their dogs to turn them into the centre – which can accommodate approximately 75 dogs at any given time, depending on the size and breed of the animal – instead of deserting them.“If you have a pet you can no longer afford, the best thing to do is to call the Animal Control Centre at 536-3162 or 536-3163. You can surrender the dog; if we’re full, you can liaise with other agencies like the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or Ocean Acres Animal Sanctuary, just to name a few,” Caddle urged.
