After graduating as class valedictorian from Pennsylvania’s Ashmun Institute – later renamed as Lincoln University – Sgt. Major Christian Fleetwood, Medal of Honor recipient in the American Civil War, started The Lyceum Observer, the first Black-owned newspaper south of the Mason-Dixon Line.
