Anti-crime songs of nonsense - Trinidad and Tobago Newsday

THE EDITOR: I am noting the latest initiative to fight crime by this government,: the "call to order" sing a song for sixpence ($30k) competition.

This is just total nonsense!

It is nonsense, when I saw the headline on Newsday's front page about this anti-crime singing/video competition when on the same page I saw headlines such as a triple murder in Tobago (which ended up being a quadruple murder), and a home-invasion murder in Carlsen Field.

We've grown accustomed to reports of murders, choppings, accidents, thefts and home invasions.

This is just total madness and mayhem. It is unbridled stupidity, ad infinitum, ad nauseam, to declare crime a national health emergency, when the only health emergency were the victims who get no attention, compensation, relief or protection.

In fact, if I understand the Trinibad music industry correctly, there are going to be some "incidents" as to who gets a bigger share of the pie, as was the case with state contracts for box drains.

We have gone past songs of hope.

We are in wails of despair, howls of horror, shrieks of terror. We no longer walk for peace, but run for our lives. We are not able to take back the communities and streets. Instead we take what we have or what's left of our lives and hide in gated communities, not daring to go into the streets, lest we be shot, stabbed, hit by a bandit's car, hit by a stray bullet or attacked by an insane homeless person.

And the best this man, this minister can come up with is a song competition?

What next, violin-playing minstrel police? Oh how the criminals must be bent over and choking back on fits of laughter. SMH.
