Nationwide protests have taken place since October 7 despite the disbanding of the controversial Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) police unit.

The demonstrators have been accused of attacking police stations and personnel.

The rallies which are mostly attended by young people have become avenues to vent against corruption and unemployment.

Rights groups say at least 15 people have been killed the demonstrations began in early October.

After Guinea's opposition leader Cellou Dalein Diallo's self-proclaimed victory in the first round of the presidential vote, his supporters flooded the streets of the capital Conakry

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, a day after the vote, Diallo said he had emerged \"victorious\" despite \"anomalies which marred the ballot\".

\"I invite all my fellow citizens who love peace and justice to stay vigilant and committed to defend this democratic victory,\" he said.

Soon after, his supporters chanted \"president\", despite no official result being published and the electoral body saying his claim was \"void\".

\"It is a great joy, we are proud that our president has been elected. All the people of Guinea are behind him,\" said Fatoumata Bineta Diallo, member of the UFDG executive board.

\"It was many citizens, outraged by the misgovernance, who joined us to give the final victory. We are very proud of him.\"

\"I think that the Ceni (electoral body) will only publish the results coming out of the ballot boxes... and the results coming out of the ballot boxes will give Cellou Dalein Diallo victory,\" said Amadou Diallo, UFDG activist.

But for all the scenes of jubilation,  there were also tense moments in the city  with security forces firing tear gas canisters at crowds of supporters.

Three men charged with Ahmaud Arbery’s death appear before a Glynn County judge today, marking the first time prosecutors and investigators lay out some of the evidence against them.

Defense attorneys for Greg and Travis McMichael and Roddie Bryan will also offer their first defenses; all three are charged with felony murder in Arbery’s death on Feb. 23.

Attorneys for Arbery’s parents said there was a sense of relief after Bryan’s arrest.

The attorneys and Arbery’s parents met with the US Attorney about federal investigations on the case last week; the Department of Justice is looking into how Brunswick DA Jackie Johnson, Waycross DA George Barnhill, and Glynn County police handled the early stages of the investigation, as well as whether federal hate crime charges apply.

Johnson and Barnhill were the first two prosecutors to review the case, despite Greg McMichael’s previous employment with Johnson’s office and Barnhill having not been given the case by Georgia’s Attorney General.

Hundreds of people took to the streets in South Africa on Wednesday to voice outrage at the shooting of peaceful demonstrators in Nigeria.

Africa's most populous country has faced growing unrest as a protest over brutality by a Nigerian police unit known as SARS ballooned into wider grievances against the government.

Witnesses said gunmen opened fire on a crowd of over 1,000 people in the main city of Lagos on Tuesday, with Amnesty International reporting that several people were killed.

On Wednesday, demonstrators draped in the national flag of Nigeria and chanting liberation slogans marched to Abuja's embassy in Pretoria carrying banners reading \"End police brutality\".

Another group of about 400 people in Cape Town, mostly Nigerian nationals, vowed to continue picketing until there was change in Nigeria.

Well-known South African rap star AKA voiced solidarity with the people of Nigeria, saying: \"How can people shoot to KILL their own countrymen and women?\"

\"This is insane... Sending love and strength to Naija,\" AKA tweeted to his 4.6 million followers.

South African opposition party, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), pledged its \"moral and political solidarity\" with Nigerians and called on the government to rein in its army and security services.

\"The EFF salutes the young lions of Nigeria in their resolve to graduate their successful fight against police brutality under the banner of #ENDSARS,\" it said in a statement.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions condemned the crackdown, saying the accumulated anger of citizens over decades of failure in the delivery of basic social services and endemic corruption, was \"visible in the pent-up anger, which has been boiling over in mass street protests in cities across the country\".

Both groups called on the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States to send a strong message to Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately end crackdown on protesters.

South Africa and Nigeria are the economic giants of Africa, competing for sporting prowess, cultural dominance and economic strength.

Violence linked to the election is once again threatening Ivory Coast, and civil society won't stay silent.

Ange Brou, an activist with the NGO Youth Space For Peace, is one of the people calling for the youth and the politicians to have a peaceful dialogue.

He is organising an event at the Belleville market in Abobo.

\"Youth is the driving force in this country. In engaging in violence, the youth loses a lot of opportunities and turns away from its real problems, like unemployment, the lack of training and jobs,\" Brou, the director of Youth Space For Peace, explained.

\"We wish the youth would instead ask for the politicians to sit with them to speak about their vision for a new society, and discuss whose candidacy is best for them.\"

77% of the population in Ivory Coast is under 35 years old. That's a massive electorate that can determine the election's winner.

According to sociologist Faihrman Rodrigue Konan, the social and economic fragility of this population has been exploited by politicians.

\"The stakes are high for the youth during elections,\" Konan said.

\"The violence, that is defended by their elders, generally does not play in favour of the youth.

\"Fundamental questions are ignored and pushed in the background. Because the logic of violence is built on other factors, such as, usually, the identity question, which is often crucial during elections.\"

\"And it pushes other questions in the background, like that of the unemployment, healthcare, access to education. And all these questions are very important for the youth.\"

The fear of the youth, to be taken hostage in the electoral debate, is very real.

Until the 31st of October, the day of the vote, and as the electoral campaign intensifies, the Ivorian youth will be coveted more than ever.

Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh said Cabinet notes and other documents related to the Couva Medical and Multi-Training Facility will be turned over to the police.

He said the Health Ministry looks forward to working with the police on the matter.

On June 1, the Opposition Leader wrote to North Central Regional Health Authority (NCRHA) chairman Steve De Las and CEO Davlin Thomas querying whether the RHA had the legal authority to run the facility.

She said it should be run by the South West RHA, as it is situated in the Couva/ Tabaquite/ Talparo Regional Corporation, for which the SWRHA has responsibility.

Kamla Persad-Bissessar said the Couva Medical and Multi-Training Facility was incorporated in 2018 under the Companies Act 1995. She said at that time Finance Minister Colm Imbert said it would be jointly owned by the government and UWI.

“However, based on the most recent annual returns filed for the company on August 26, 2020, the only shareholder was the Minister of Finance, as corporation sole, holding all ten ordinary shares at a value of $1 per share that was issued. No shares have been issued to the UWI. Therefore, the company remains a company wholly owned by the State.”

San Juan/Barataria MP Saddam Hosein said on June 4 that the UNC would refer the matter to the Commissioner of Police for immediate criminal investigation.

Speaking at the Health Ministry’s media conference on Wednesday, Deyalsingh said, “There were Cabinet minutes number 570, and number 1284, dating back to 2018, (in) which Cabinet agreed to set up a special-purpose company, the Couva Medical and Multi-Training Facility, which comprises 51 per cent shareholding by UWI, and 49 per cent by government.

\" The very broad remit of that is to operate the facility, so notice the term, the very broad remit. So we look forward to turning over all these documents to the police as the Opposition Leader has said, and we would take it from there. So that is the authority under which, the broad remit, as I said, meaning the operationalisation of the facility, and we will comply and assist and work with the police as Mrs Persad-Bissessar has said.”

Speaking to Newsday on Wednesday, De Las said he had acknowledged receipt of the letter from the Opposition Leader’s office.

“I saw media reports that there was a report to the police,\" he added. \"I see a request was made for the police to investigate, and I don’t want to comment further.”

\"I have acknowledged receipt of the letter from the Leader of the Opposition’s office.\"

Ivory Coast's government says it has decided to favorably consider requests on the restructuring of the Independent Electoral Commission.

The decision comes on  the proposal of the ECOWAS Peace and Security Commission chaired by General Francis Béhanzin.

The government also expressed its support for a meeting between the President Alassane Ouattara and the President of the PDCI, Henri Konan Bédié, with a view to the participation of the opposition in the presidential election of 31 October 2020.

The information was made public in a statement read by the Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralization, Sidiki Diakité, at the end of a working session chaired by Prime Minister Hamed Bakayoko on Wednesday, October 21, 2020 in Abidjan. A meeting that brought together the government, the ECOWAS Peace and Security Commission and opposition political parties. The PDCI and the FPI did not respond to the invitation.

According to Sidiki Diakité, the government decided to consider favorably the requests on the restructuring of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) made by the opposition after exchanges with this ECOWAS commission. These requests relate to \"the integration of a fifth personality into the central commission of the IEC in the name of the opposition, the granting of a post of vice-president to the PDCI in the office of the central commission of the IEC and the recomposition of the local IECs\".

The participants also deplored the violent demonstrations that have been recorded in recent weeks and which have resulted in loss of life, serious injuries and significant property damage.

In addition, the government called on the political parties to lift, without delay, the watchword of civil disobedience, to commit themselves definitively to the path of dialogue and to work for a peaceful presidential election on Saturday, October 31, 2020.

Hamed Bakayoko thanked ECOWAS for its \"engagement with stakeholders to help move forward in the negotiations\".

The ECOWAS delegation led a ministerial mission of preventive diplomacy to Côte d'Ivoire from 18 to 19 October.

(The Center Square) – Michigan drivers will be able to opt out of unlimited personal injury protection (PIP) insurance and cut costs on their car insurance rate beginning Thursday, when an insurance reform measure goes into effect.

The state enacted a no-fault insurance law in 1973 that required all state policyholders to buy unlimited PIP coverage.

Those who keep unlimited PIP coverage would receive a 10 percent rollback of PIP coverage costs on average.

Stephan Sinas, legal counsel for The Coalition Protecting Auto No-Fault, previously told The Center Square that the MCCA fee reduction might give short-term relief to consumer’s pocketbooks but at the cost of less medical care for injured motorists who choose lower coverage options.

The nonpartisan House Fiscal Agency estimated the law could increase the state’s Medicare costs by $65.9 million over a 10-year-period from uninsured or under-insured motorists declaring bankruptcy after crashes that exceed that person’s insurance coverage.

\"Hence, Nigeria's substitution/replacement of Ambassador Yonov Frederick Agah with Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as candidate for DG-WTO cannot be treated as fresh nomination for the position, and as such cannot be said, or even imagined \"not to conform\" with Rules 11 (1,2,3,4,5), 12 or indeed any of the Rules of Procedure deliberately highlighted by OLC to mislead.

In addition, the federal government explained that to state that \"Nigeria is latching on its sovereign right to change existing rules of procedure and relevant decisions of executive council as well as decisions of other policy organs,\" was unbecoming, unfortunate and a gross misinterpretation and misrepresentation of facts from an office established to be dispassionate, neutral and professional.

\"It is in the spirit of the stated Assembly Decision 795(XXXIII) of February, 2020, as well as other relevant decisions, that after due consultations, the Republic of Benin stepped down her candidate in total support of Nigeria's Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for DG-WTO; and,

\"That the WTO has acted upon the withdrawal of the nomination of Ambassador Yonov Frederick Agah and accepted and processed the nomination of Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as appropriate.

Meanwhile, in a June 15, 2020, Note Verbale, the country had explained that it was true that the Executive Council, through Decision EX.CL/Dec.1072 (XXXV) of July 2019, called on all AU member-states to consider presenting competent candidates to the AU Ministerial Committee on Candidatures in the International System for the position of DG-WTO by 30th November, 2019, with a view to endorsing one candidate during the February, 2020 36th Ordinary Session.

Twitter placed a warning on a tweet from a Florida congressman about hunting antifa.

No sooner had President Trump announced he would label antifa – a left-wing, anti-fascist political movement – a terrorist organization, than Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz apparently decided it was open season.

Twitter, which recently put a “glorifying violence” warning label on one of Trump’s tweets, promptly slapped a warning on Gaetz’s tweet.

“Antifa is a terrorist organization, encouraging riots that hurt Americans,” tweeted Gaetz, an avid Trump supporter.

Applying and experimenting with makeup can be a fun and creative experience but for people of diverse ethnicities, it can be disheartening.

For years they have raised concerns about the lack of beauty products for darker skin.

One Zimbabwean born make up artist in Australia is now inspiring younger women to speak out,

\"I think unfortunately often, we are only seeing one shade, or one race being represented all the time,\" said make-up artist Rumbidzai Mudzengi.

\"A lot of the time, it starts to feel like there's no place for us, and I want young people to realise that there is a space for you,\"

\"If you're going to serve someone, you need to do it all the way and you need to cater for everyone, it's really that simple, that's why you get into business.\"

The women say a common problem is with big brand retailers, who mostly cater to light and medium skin tones.

\"Sometimes it's just harder to find the right place that sells the right foundation and stuff for my skin,\"said ons young woman. Another said it \"added to the feeling of being isolated, a bit I guess unwelcome to some degree. The fact that I had to go to special stores just to find my shade, it was a bit of an inconvenience for me.\"

It means they often have to do more research on the products and go to specialised shops

but new brands have recently emerged such as Fenty, by the singer Rihanna.

Other well-established brands such as Mac and Make Up For Ever are also developing new ranges for all skin tones.

But there is still a long road to go.

While make up retailers in many cities say they offer a wide variety of products.

In practice, some young women with dark skin say they have had to go to specialized shops which are often more expensive.

Guinea's opposition leader Cellou Dalein Diallo declared on Monday declared himself winner of Sunday's vote, defeating Alpha Conde, the incumbent president.

Speaking at a press conference in the capital Conakry a day after the hotly contested election, Diallo said he had emerged \"victorious\" despite \"anomalies which marred the ballot\".

\"I invite all my fellow citizens who love peace and justice to stay vigilant and committed to defend this democratic victory,\" the 68-year-old said, dressed in a sky-blue robe, from his party headquarters.

Outside the building, supporters erupted in joy and chanted \"Cellou, president\". Elsewhere in the city, security forces fired tear gas canisters at crowds assembling in support of Diallo.

Bakary Mansare, the vice-president of Guinea's electoral authority, told AFP that Diallo's self-proclaimed victory was \"null and void\".

\"It is not up to a candidate or a person to proclaim himself the winner outside the bodies defined by the law,\" he said.

Conde's RPG party also said in a statement Monday that it condemned \"with the utmost firmness the irresponsible and dangerous declaration\" by Diallo. It called for its activists to remain calm.

Diallo's announcement sets the stage for a showdown with the government, which insists that Sunday's vote was fair and that the official electoral authority must declare the results.

Signs of a looming electoral dispute began to appear during the vote, however, when Diallo told reporters that Conde could \"cheat\" his way to power.

'Chaos'

Ousmane Gaoual Diallo, a cadre in Diallo's UFDG party, said that results at individual polling states were public, enabling the party's own observers to conduct a count.

\"If we are the winners, we will defend our victory,\" he said. \"We won't wait.\"

Earlier on Monday, Guinea's government said in a statement that the opposition \"clearly intended to create chaos and to call into question the real results that will come out of the ballot box\".

Much of the tension in Guinea relates to President Conde's controversial bid for a third term.

He pushed through a new constitution in March which he argued would modernise the country. But it also allowed him to bypass a two-term limit for presidents, provoking mass protests.

Prime Minister Kassory Fofana said that the opposition publishing results ahead of the official results was tantamount to pouring \"oil on the fire\".

Second round

Guinea's acrimonious political campaign saw Conde and Diallo trade insults, and was marked by violent incidents in some parts of the west African country.

But it also raised the spectre of ethnic strife, with Conde accused of exploiting divisions for electoral ends - a charge he denies.

Guinea's politics are mainly drawn along ethnic lines: the president's base is mostly from the ethnic Malinke community and Diallo's from the Fulani people.

A second round of voting, if needed, is scheduled for November 24.

Observers from the African Union and the Economic Comunity of West African States (ECOWAS) have said Guinea was conducted transparently, despite opposition claims of irregularities.

On Monday, opposition leader Cellou Diallo declared himself winner, saying his own tally gave him a first-round victory over president Alpha Conde.

Diallo’s claim was swiftly rejected by the electoral commission, which called it “premature” and “void”.

Addressing journalists in the capital, Conakry, Augustin Matata Ponyo, the AU’s head of mission in Guinea, said on Tuesday the ballot was held “in transparency”.

\"The elections were held in a transparent, secure, calm and peaceful environment, once again demonstrating the maturity of the Guinean people and political actors\", he asserted.

Tension is building in the country ahead of the release of official results. Diallo's supporters have held celebrations in the capital.

Francis Behanzin, ECOWAS' Peace and Security commissioner urged candidates \"to resort to legal avenues\" if they are aggrieved.

May 17 marked the 66th anniversary of the landmark 1954 Supreme Court decision, Brown v. the Board of Education.

When Chief Justice Warren issued the unanimous opinion of the court in Brown, he wrote that “… in the field of public education the doctrine of separate but equal has no place,” as segregated schools are “inherently unequal.”

In the 2013 Supreme Court decision in Shelby County v. Holder, the court, by a 5-4 vote (with five right-wing justices in the majority), gutted the Voting Rights Act.

The scandalous decision by Chief Justice John Roberts overturned the re-authorization of the Act by Congress, arguing that the country “has changed” and that racial discrimination in voting was no longer a problem in the South.

The Brown decision reminds us that the Supreme Court can be and ought to be a force for equality.

Henry Richardson: Key Figure in Amending the State Constitution to Integrate the National Guard

Henry J. Richardson, Jr., was also instrumental in amending the state constitution to allow integration of the National Guard and he helped end racial discrimination at Indiana University, which had prohibited blacks from living in campus dormitories.

He then returned to Indianapolis to attend the Indiana University School of Law, earning his LL.B.

Richardson challenged his colleagues to “put teeth” into the state’s existing civil rights law, a measure enacted in 1885 but largely emasculated by the courts in succeeding years.
