Nairobi — Seven of the new coronavirus cases that were reported in Kenya on Thursday are on mourners who had traveled from Kibera slum in Nairobi, the Health Ministry said.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said the seven had obtained a permit illegally to attend a burial in Siaya, only to be found to be positive.

\"The Siaya story is a sad one because the departure point of that case is actually in Kibera, somebody in Kibera without the authority to authorize anybody to travel signed a document that allowed and was respected by police all the way from Kibera taking mourners for a funeral in Siaya,\" he said at a news conference on Thursday when he announced 80 new cases, raising the total in the country to 1,109.

He regretted that Kenyans were taking lightly the coronavirus situation in the country that continues to register double-digit figures.

Kenya is implementing a dusk to dawn curfew, and a cessation of movement in and out of Eastleigh estate in Nairobi and Old Town area of Mombasa.

This is so far the highest daily increase in the country since the virus was confirmed on March 13.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe confirmed three more Covid-19 deaths after three patients died in hospitals after contracting the virus.

In his daily coronavirus briefing, Mr Kagwe announced that urban poor areas in Nairobi have become a focal point of the Covid-19 outbreak.

Mr Kagwe said public transport is fuelling the spread of the virus in the slums.

Flame Tree sets sights on corporate bond

Flame Tree Group (FTG) #ticker:FTGH intends to issue a corporate bond to fund growth despite the reduced investor appetite following loss of money in Chase and Imperial bank securities.

The bond plans come on the back of FTG having secured Sh905 million ($8.5 million) credit line from SBM bank to improve working capital and fund growth even as it froze payment on maturing loans in the wake of coronavirus.

Activity in the unsecured corporate bond market in the years leading to 2015 was fairly active until the Chase and Imperial Bank issuances brought a droughtt.

Investors are still seeking recourse on Sh4.82 billion and Sh2 billion Chase and Imperial bonds respectively after the two banks sank into receivership.

The residents say that the man was shot eight times by suspected police officers attached to Pangani Police Station and who were enforcing curfew orders, but the police point an accusing finger at suspected robbers.

In a police WhatsApp group that has most officers who operate within the city, there were claims that thugs were behind the murder.

\"He was not shot by the police but armed robbers who shot him and left him to die on the road,\" an officer, reacting to an earlier post that accused the police, wrote in the WhatsApp group.

Area residents who spoke to Nairobi News said the man was killed at 8pm in Mathare Area 3 at a time when officers were enforcing curfew orders.

President Uhuru Kenyatta and Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i have in the past warned the police against using unnecessary force when enforcing curfew orders, but the officers seem to be ignoring the calls.

Within the first month at the university, Mr Kang’ata had already been elected the vice-chairman of the Kenya Law Students Society.

Mr Kang’ata, who served Kiharu as MP between 2013 and 2017, credits this election to his rise to the Sonu leadership at a young age.

We would assemble at a place called Kamukunji, outside the university’s Hall 9, where students were given an opportunity to address the comrades (fellow students),” says Mr Kang’ata, a staunch Catholic and a law lecturer at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa.

However, as fate would have it, Mr Kang’ata would only serve in the Sonu leadership for six months because as he was suspended even before completing his first year after students went on the rampage.

But the case dragged on for long, forcing him to head to his parents’ home in Grogan estate, Murang’a.

Having nothing to do with his life, Mr Kang’ata who had scored grade “A” minus in his KCSE exams at Thika High School in 1997, turned to washing cars for a living.

Another two Covid-19 patients have died in Kenya as of Thursday afternoon, bringing the total coronavirus-related death toll in the country to 132, the Health ministry said.

A total of 178 people tested positive for the disease in the last 24 hours, Health Chief Administrative Secretary Mercy Mwangangi said Thursday.

Nairobi is leading with 100 cases followed by Kajiado with 21 cases.

Other counties that reported new cases on Thursday are Migori (17), Kiambu (16), Busia (8),  Mombasa (7), Machakos (4) and Nakuru (2).

Uasin Gishu, Kericho and Taita Taveta recorded one case each.

The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank, today approved an €188 million loan to support the Government of Kenya’s efforts to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and mitigate the related economic, health and social impacts.

The loan will extend additional resources to Kenya as the country takes steps to contain the spread of the pandemic and deal with its unprecedented impact.

“We are very pleased to join other development partners in supporting the Government of Kenya’s efforts in mitigating the financial impact of the pandemic, especially in terms of the country’s expenditure in the health, social and economic sectors.

In April, the Bank extended an emergency grant to help countries in the East and Horn of Africa, including Kenya, that are contending with swarms of locusts that are threatening food security.

He added that the government recognizes truck drivers and their counterparts in the transport industry for their continued support to ensure adequate supplies of goods across the East African countries and for enduring long journey and waiting times at border points as each country tries to be vigilant in their containment measures against COVID.

Bodies of two infants have been recovered from the Nairobi River near Korogocho area by Sonko Rescue Team.

The two bodies now brings the total number of bodies recovered from the river since the beginning of the cleaning exercise early last year to 21.

According to Fredrick Okinda, who was leading the clean up exercise, one of the team members found one infant wrapped in polythene paper while the other was found floating nearby.

Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has urged the police to come up with more concrete solutions that will help nab those dumping babies and promoting abortion.

\"Most of the cases are about defilement but reported to us as a teenage pregnancy.

Tough decisions for Kenya in next 10 days

Friday, May 29, 2020 0:01

By DENNIS KABAARA

Coronavirus COVID-19 medical test vaccine research and development concept.

It was said that Covid-19 silenced Kenya’s March 2018 “handshake” and its ensuing Building Bridges to Unity Initiative (BBI).

Neither stimulus “remakes” Kenya, yet (let’s see how far the SME loan guarantee goes, and how long it stays).

Mostly, he has a chance to translate the current “spray and pray” approach into a uniquely Kenyan “remake” (not just recovery) that recognizes a trilemma (not dilemma) around lives (health, food, water and the other basics), livelihoods (opportunity, resilience and sustainability) and (least mentioned) living (the reshaping of society and our social capital in a post-Covid era).

Forget “The Purge” and “Casino Royale”, let’s delve into this “remaking Kenya” perspective next week.
