The Canadian High Commission in Georgetown, Guyana is the primary channel for communications between the Government of Canada and a legitimate Government of Guyana.

So, when HE Chatterjee joined with the other international diplomats and accredited election observers to challenge the flawed tabulation of results from the March 2nd general election, she was engaged in what was expected of her by Canada’s Government, the Foreign Ministry and the people of Canada.

The petition and letter based on frivolous grounds, are asking for the recall of Lilian Chatterjee as Canada’s High Commissioner to Guyana.

Consequently a  counter petition in support of HE Chatterjee and other diplomats who are championing democracy in Guyana, was initiated by an apolitical ad hoc group, that does not ask for or accept donations, ‘Democracy Watch 2020’ and uploaded on change.org (Supporting the Canadian High Commissioner and others championing democracy in Guyana).

We strongly urge our Canadian Government to stay the course, lend our diplomat all the support she needs by strengthening her hand and to demand that local authorities in Guyana  facilitate the completion of her work, without hindrance.

And I have joined in previous demonstrations over the last several weeks because George Floyd’s murder serves as yet another painful reminder of the deeply entrenched racism in our nation’s institutions, from the highest levels of government to local law enforcement.

African-Americans and Latinos have long been allies and partners in the fight for equality for all Americans, as we advocate for policies that address long-standing inequities and create opportunities in education, health, and economic empowerment.

The time to act is now, and as part of our commitment to racial and social justice we are supporting the Justice in Policing Act to provide measures of accountability and reform in our nation’s police force; asking that federal, state, and local governments issue states of emergency declaring racism a public health crisis; and endorsing greater restructured funding for community support policies and services that address mental health, addiction, and domestic violence issues that impact public health and safety.

Building a more inclusive, safe and just nation starts with racial justice for black Americans.

June 18: Kenya beats Djibouti for non-permanent UNSC seat

\tKenya defeated Djibouti on Thursday for an African seat on the U.N. Security Council in a second round of voting held under dramatically different procedures because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

AP

June 17: Kenya, Djibouti split regional votes for non-permanent UNSC seat

\tKenya and Djibouti will later today know which of them will take Africa’s non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, UNSC.

The Security Council is the U.N.’s most powerful body and has five permanent members — the United States, Russia, China, Britain and France — and 10 members elected by the General Assembly for two-year terms, with seats allocated to regional groups.

Winning a seat on the council is considered a pinnacle of achievement for many countries because it gives them a strong voice on issues of international peace and security ranging from conflicts in Syria, Yemen and Ukraine to the nuclear threat posed by North Korea and Iran to attacks by extremist groups such as the Islamic State and al-Qaeda.

Normally, ambassadors from the 193 U.N. member states would meet in the horseshoe-shaped assembly chamber at U.N. headquarters overlooking New York’s East River and vote by secret ballot for new Security Council members.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has called on citizens “pulling out all the stops” in the “long war” against the coronavirus as the country edged closer to the 1,000 death mark following a record daily toll jump of 60 deaths on Friday.

South Africa recorded a death toll of 908 with 43,434 positive cases of the Covid-19 coronavirus, the highest infection in the continent.

President Ramaphosa visited the Western Cape province which is the country's epicentre with 28,807 positive cases and 704 casualties and called for an “all hands on deck” approach in the battle to save lives.

Almost 2,000 of Western Cape's healthcare workers contracted the virus with 17 of them losing their lives, as Ramaphosa noted that more staff and beds are needed at the field hospital.

We’re fighting a life and death war and staffing challenges must be solved,” he said.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Federal authorities will review local investigations into the hanging deaths of two black men in Southern California to determine whether federal law was violated, officials said Monday.

Local authorities have said there is no evidence of foul play in the deaths of Robert Fuller in Palmdale and Malcolm Harsch in Victorville and early indications point both to suicide, but sheriffs have pledged to continue to investigate the cases.

People who participated in a town hall hosted by Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva on Monday also voiced concerns that Fuller and Harsch may have been lynched.

The FBI, U.S. attorney’s office in the Central District of California and the U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division are monitoring the investigations of the Los Angeles County and San Bernardino County sheriffs, authorities said in a statement.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said foul play was not suspected in the death of Harsch, but his family said in a statement issued Saturday that they were concerned it will be ruled a suicide to avoid further attention.
